For South America, choose a VPN based on the country you need to connect to and the route you will actually use—not a continent-wide speed ranking. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison lists regional locations for five providers, while Comparitech’s latest Brazil-route results, updated September 26, 2026, measure performance to Brazil only. Those sources point to different strengths, and the available figures do not establish a best VPN for every South American country.
How the five options compare
The location counts below come from Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison. Brazil performance figures are from Comparitech’s route test, updated September 26, 2026. A location count does not establish how many countries are covered, whether every server is physical, or how a connection will perform from your particular starting point.

Comparitech’s speed-retention figure is the share of an unprotected connection’s speed retained through the VPN tunnel. Its loaded-latency figure is the median increase over each sample’s own idle reading. Connection-time medians cover successful connections and include the app interface, so they do not describe every attempt. These test conditions matter: the results compare that tested route and setup, not the speeds a user in any South American country should expect.
Which VPN is fastest for a Brazil route?
Among the providers in the table with Brazil-route measurements, Proton VPN retained the largest share of baseline speed in Comparitech’s September 26, 2026 dataset: 68%, compared with NordVPN at 61% and ExpressVPN at 59%. That makes Proton VPN the speed-retention leader among these measured options in this particular test, not a guaranteed fastest choice for every user connecting to Brazil.

Speed retention is only one part of the result. NordVPN recorded the lowest loaded latency among those three at 131.4 ms, compared with ExpressVPN at 137.7 ms and Proton VPN at 351.0 ms. A user who prioritizes responsiveness under load may weigh that differently from someone focused on retained throughput. The test’s idle-latency and connection-time figures are also listed above, but no single metric captures every use case.
TechRadar’s separate 2026 lab comparison reported average local download speeds of 1,256 Mbps for NordVPN and 1,521 Mbps for Proton VPN. Those are results from a different test context, not measurements of South American users or Brazil routes, so they should not be used to predict a local connection speed.

Which VPN has South American locations?
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison lists ten South American locations for NordVPN, nine for ExpressVPN, seven for Proton VPN, and nine for PIA. These are location counts, not necessarily counts of distinct countries. They also do not prove that every advertised location uses physical servers in that country or that the location is available on every plan.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN’s official server list identifies Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. Its seven-location regional count in Tom’s Guide’s comparison is a separate measure; do not treat that number as seven countries.

ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s official server listing identifies Brazil and Chile and labels some other regional entries as virtual locations. Check the current listing for the country you need if physical server placement matters to you.
NordVPN and PIA
The cited comparison gives each provider a regional location count, but the evidence here does not establish a comparable country-by-country list for either. Confirm the live server list in the provider’s app or official location page before subscribing, especially if you need an IP address from one specific country.

Can you get a Brazilian IP address while abroad?
Usually, that is the purpose of connecting to a VPN server listed in Brazil: websites see the VPN exit address rather than your usual public IP address. Before paying, confirm that your chosen provider currently offers a Brazil location and that it is accessible from your travel destination. A location count for all of South America does not by itself confirm Brazil availability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA VPN changes the apparent network location, but it does not guarantee anonymity. Accounts, cookies, device settings, browser location permissions, and other signals can still reveal information about where you are. Use a VPN as one privacy measure, not as a promise that every service will treat you as a local user.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Will a VPN work with your streaming service?
It may, but access depends on the streaming platform, the catalog you want, the country of the VPN server, and the platform’s current detection rules. The available evidence does not establish a comparable streaming test across South American countries, so no provider here can be guaranteed to unlock a particular service or catalog.
Proton VPN describes streaming support and plan-dependent features on its own site. Treat that as the provider’s claim, and check the current plan terms and the platform’s rules before relying on it. If streaming is your main reason for subscribing, confirm the specific service and target country during any available trial or refund period.
How to choose for your use case
- You need a Brazilian exit IP: verify Brazil availability in the provider’s current server list, then use the Brazil-route figures as one limited point of comparison rather than a personal speed guarantee.
- You want more regional locations: NordVPN has the highest count in Tom’s Guide’s comparison, tied at ten; check which countries those locations actually cover.
- You prioritize measured speed retention to Brazil: Proton VPN led the measured options in Comparitech’s test, while NordVPN had the lowest loaded latency among the three measured providers shown here.
- You are considering PIA: its regional count is reported, but the cited evidence does not provide equivalent Brazil performance or enough comparable privacy and streaming findings to rank it on those grounds.
- You need a privacy-focused decision: compare current privacy policies, independent audits, leak-protection testing, and the provider’s response to legal data requests. The figures above do not settle those questions for all four services.
What to check before subscribing
Coverage and a single route test are not a complete buying decision. Before choosing, verify the details that matter for your country, devices, and budget:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Country and server type: check whether your target country is available and whether the listed server is virtual or physically located there.
- Performance from your location: test the relevant route at the times you expect to use it. Distance, local internet service, congestion, and the VPN protocol can affect results.
- Privacy evidence: read the current privacy policy and look for independent audits or testing that address your threat model. A provider’s account of one test round is not a universal guarantee.
- Streaming compatibility: verify the exact platform and catalog from the country you plan to use, rather than assuming access from a general claim about streaming support.
- Devices and limits: confirm app support for your operating systems and the current number of simultaneous connections allowed by the plan.
- Total cost and exit terms: check the price for your region, renewal rate, billing period, refund conditions, and any plan-specific feature restrictions before checkout.
What the independent-test claims do—and do not—show
NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 article summarizes an Artifact Security multi-provider test that used criteria including speed, leak protection, website accessibility, feature reliability, and connection time. NordVPN says it received the only Platinum rating and a score of 91, while noting that the account reflects one testing round. This is a provider-published summary of a particular test, not proof that the service is best for every privacy risk or South American route.
