Athens-based artist Theo Triantafyllidis built Feral Metaverse (Spider), 2026 as two connected experiences: a soft, climbable spider sculpture and a multiplayer game where avatars run, crawl, and climb on one another. Visitors are invited to help each other onto the sculpture before entering its virtual world, making cooperation and physical contact part of the artwork—not just a prelude to it.
Who built the giant spider for a virtual world?
Theo Triantafyllidis is an Athens-based artist whose work spans video games, live simulations, performances, and physical installations. He received the 2026 Frieze Artist Award for Feral Metaverse (Spider), 2026. His playful environments often explore complex subjects, including ecological collapse, human desire, and connection. Google’s announcement of the project describes spiders as “the original engineers,” a phrase that reflects the work’s interest in creatures that build and connect.

What is Feral Metaverse (Spider)?
It is both a participatory sculpture and a multiplayer digital environment. The physical spider is soft and tactile, designed to invite people to approach and climb it. The organizers describe visitors helping one another get onto the sculpture; from a spider leg, they can access the game embedded in the installation.

In the virtual cave, players inhabit “feral” avatars that can run, crawl, and climb onto one another. Their bodies can form temporary collective shapes. The transition links two kinds of participation: coordinating with other people around a physical object, then moving together through a shared digital space.

Why make a spider soft and welcoming?
The spider is deliberately ambivalent. It may seem strange or intimidating, yet the artist and organizers also frame it as soft, intelligent, and unexpectedly tender. That tension makes it a way to consider contact, trust, cooperation, and play: the same creature can repel and invite, and the same sculpture asks visitors to rely on one another rather than simply look at it.
The fair presentation was scheduled for October 14–18, 2026, at Frieze London in The Regent’s Park. The project announcement establishes the schedule, not what happened at the event or how visitors responded.

How did the physical and digital parts come together?
The production brought together sculptors, fabricators, textile designers, game developers, and civil engineers. Gemini was used in visual development, helping generate sketches, character designs, backgrounds, and 3D renders. Those explorations were part of a broader process involving human collaborators and physical materials—not a claim that an AI system independently made the finished sculpture or game.

In Google Arts & Culture’s account of the making process, Triantafyllidis describes a pencil sketch becoming a photorealistic installation rendering, a hand-sculpted clay prototype being textured with virtual fabrics, and a generated image being taken to Athens’ Fabric District to find a textile equivalent. He characterizes generative AI as “a strange new material,” tested and shaped alongside traditional methods.
