For a feature-rich option, consider Proton VPN; for account and payment privacy, Mullvad; for privacy-focused service with short-term plan options, IVPN. None is a universal winner: streaming access, platform compatibility, and current plan terms need checking against your own needs.
How the three VPNs differ
| VPN | What stands out | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Proton describes support for WireGuard and OpenVPN, open-source apps with regular independent audits, NetShield DNS filtering, and anti-censorship features including Stealth and alternative routing. It also claims support for many popular streaming services. Proton VPN feature details | Platform support differs: Privacy Guides notes IPv6 differences and says Stealth is not available on Linux in its guidance. | Mullvad | RTINGS reports signup with a generated account number rather than an email address, cash or cryptocurrency payment options, WireGuard, and up to five simultaneous connections. Mullvad states that it does not log user activity. RTINGS review Mullvad no-logging policy | RTINGS reports that streaming services can identify and block Mullvad IP addresses, and that Mullvad does not support port forwarding. Results can vary by service and server. |
| IVPN | RTINGS reports no-email signup and a weekly Standard plan; WIRED describes generated account IDs and longer plan choices. RTINGS review WIRED review | RTINGS says IVPN does not guarantee access to geo-restricted streaming services. Check current plan availability and device limits. |
Choose by your main priority
Choose Proton VPN for breadth of features
Proton’s published feature set includes two widely used protocols, DNS filtering, open-source apps, and tools intended to help when connections are blocked. These are provider descriptions, not a guarantee that every feature will work on every device or network. Its vendor page claims support for many popular streaming services, but that should not be treated as a permanent promise of access to a specific catalog.

Check the platform details before choosing it for a restrictive network. Privacy Guides documents platform differences, including Stealth availability and IPv6 support. A feature that exists on one app may not be available in another.
Choose Mullvad if you value minimal signup details
RTINGS says Mullvad lets customers create an account using a generated number without providing an email address, and reports cash and cryptocurrency payment options. It also reports up to five simultaneous connections and WireGuard operation. Mullvad’s no-logging policy is its stated practice, not proof that any VPN eliminates privacy or security risks.

If streaming is a central reason for subscribing, account for RTINGS’ warning that streaming services may block Mullvad addresses. That assessment does not establish what every service or server will do now. Mullvad also does not support port forwarding, according to RTINGS.
Choose IVPN for privacy focus and billing flexibility
RTINGS and WIRED describe IVPN’s generated account-ID signup without a conventional email-based account. RTINGS reports a weekly Standard option, while WIRED covers longer plan choices. Since plan availability and device limits can change, confirm the terms directly before paying. IVPN does not guarantee geo-restricted streaming access, according to RTINGS.

What to know about censorship features
Proton describes Stealth and alternative routing as features intended to help with censorship or blocked connections. They are not a guarantee of access in a particular country or on a particular network. Privacy Guides notes limitations, including Stealth’s unavailability on Linux in the guidance it reviewed. For a device-specific decision, verify current support and consider that restrictive networks may use filtering methods a VPN feature cannot overcome.

Proton’s claim of support for many popular streaming services is a vendor claim; RTINGS reports blocking risks for Mullvad and says IVPN does not guarantee access to geo-restricted services. Streaming platforms change how they identify VPN traffic, so past access does not ensure future access. If access to a particular service matters, check its current behavior and the VPN’s current terms rather than assuming any provider will unlock a catalog.
