There are two ways to connect Samsung devices to Alexa: use Alexa built into a supported Samsung TV or monitor, or link SmartThings with the Alexa app so an Alexa device can control compatible Samsung and other SmartThings devices. The right steps and available commands depend on the device, model and region. Samsung’s compatibility information below is from its US support guidance.

Choose the connection that fits your Samsung device

Your situation Setup route What to expect
Supported Samsung TV or monitor Use Alexa built into the device Set it up on the TV or monitor and authorize your Amazon account. Hands-free wake-up depends on the model. An Echo speaker is not required for this route. Samsung’s TV and monitor guidance and voice-assistant setup instructions
TV without built-in Alexa, or a TV you want to control through another Alexa device Link SmartThings to Alexa Add the TV to SmartThings, enable the SmartThings skill in Alexa and discover devices. An Echo speaker is one possible Alexa device; available TV commands are limited. Samsung’s TV and monitor guidance and SmartThings linking guidance
Samsung soundbar SmartThings plus the Samsung Wireless Audio skill Add the soundbar in SmartThings, link the skill in Alexa and discover it. Samsung’s TV and soundbar instructions
Other compatible SmartThings devices Link the SmartThings skill to Alexa Samsung lists lights, switches, dimmers, thermostats, locks and routines, plus checking motion and contact sensor status. Compatibility and commands vary by device. Samsung’s SmartThings guidance

Set up Alexa built into a Samsung TV or monitor

Samsung Support says Alexa is built into Samsung Smart TVs starting with 2020 models and Smart Monitors starting with 2022 models. The setup Samsung describes requires a Samsung account and an internet connection. Features, including hands-free wake-up, can vary by model. 1. Connect the TV or monitor to the internet and have your Amazon account details ready. Sign in to a Samsung account if prompted.
  2. During first-time setup, select Alexa as the voice assistant. If setup is already complete, open the Alexa app from the device’s Home screen, or use the settings route below.
  3. On the TV, go to Settings > General > Voice > Voice assistant > Alexa > OK. Scan the on-screen QR code with a phone, sign in to Amazon, tap Allow, then follow the remaining prompts. Samsung’s voice-assistant setup instructions
  4. To speak to Alexa, press and hold the remote’s microphone button and give a command. On models that support voice wake-up, Samsung says it can be enabled under Settings > General > Voice; check the options available on your model.

Samsung describes the remote microphone button as one way to interact and notes an on-screen indicator. It also says voice recordings can be reviewed, heard or deleted through Alexa privacy settings or the Alexa phone app. Samsung Support

Link SmartThings devices to the Alexa app

Use this route when you want an Alexa device or the Alexa app to control a compatible Samsung TV, soundbar or other SmartThings device. Samsung’s current instructions call for the SmartThings app, not SmartThings Classic. Samsung Support: Connect SmartThings to Alexa

  2. Give it a short, easy-to-say name, such as “Living room TV.” Samsung advises avoiding special characters.
  3. In the Alexa app, open Menu > Skills & Games. Enable SmartThings for a TV or other SmartThings device. For a soundbar, enable Samsung Wireless Audio. Follow the prompts to sign in with Samsung credentials, choose a SmartThings location if asked, and authorize linking the accounts.
  4. Start device discovery in the Alexa app, or say, “Alexa, discover devices.” Confirm the discovered devices in Alexa. If discovery does not start automatically, go to the Alexa app’s Devices tab, choose Add or Add Device, and select SmartThings. Samsung’s device-linking instructions and SmartThings discovery guidance

Samsung lists lights, on/off switches, dimmer switches, thermostats, locks and SmartThings routines among the supported categories; Alexa can also check motion and contact sensor status. This is not a promise that every SmartThings device or command will work. Account locations and permission prompts may differ, so follow the options shown in your apps. Samsung Support

Know what Alexa can control

TV or soundbar linked through SmartThings

Samsung’s examples for direct TV control through the SmartThings/Alexa setup are basic actions such as turning on the TV and changing channels. Do not assume this route supports broad menu navigation or every TV feature. For soundbars, Samsung’s instructions use the Samsung Wireless Audio skill. Samsung Support

Other SmartThings devices

Alexa can offer broader smart-home control for compatible devices and routines, including the categories Samsung lists above. The exact action depends on the device and its Alexa integration; check that device’s compatibility rather than assuming all SmartThings products expose all their functions.

Troubleshoot discovery and account linking

  • The device does not appear in Alexa: Confirm it is added to SmartThings, the correct Alexa skill is enabled, account authorization finished, and the device has a recognizable name. Run discovery again.
  • Automatic discovery did not start: In Alexa, open Devices, choose Add or Add Device, and select SmartThings to start discovery manually. Samsung’s SmartThings instructions
  • The skill or authorization step fails: Reopen the relevant skill in Alexa and follow the account and location prompts displayed there. For a soundbar, check that you enabled Samsung Wireless Audio rather than SmartThings.
  • A command does not work: Confirm the device is compatible and try a basic supported action. Samsung’s TV examples for this route are turning on the TV and changing channels; other commands are not established by that guidance.

Disconnect SmartThings from Alexa

Samsung documents unlinking from SmartThings through Menu > Settings > Linked services > Amazon Alexa > Unlink. Alternatively, disable the SmartThings skill in Alexa’s smart-home skill controls. App labels can change, so the route shown on your device may differ. Samsung Support
