The best virtual machine depends first on your computer’s operating system and processor architecture, then on the guest OS and applications you need to run. For Windows and Linux hosts, consider VMware Workstation Pro, VirtualBox, or Hyper-V on supported Windows editions; for a Mac, compare VMware Fusion Pro with Parallels Desktop. No current, controlled cross-platform benchmark establishes one as the fastest overall.
Which virtual machine fits your host computer?
This comparison is about desktop virtualization software installed on a computer you control—not cloud VM providers or bare-metal server hypervisors. Host OS and CPU architecture determine which products and guest systems are available. A guest’s architecture and the compatibility of its applications and peripherals matter just as much as the product name.

Which VM should you use on Windows or Linux?
Choose VMware Workstation Pro for a configurable desktop VM
Workstation Pro is aimed at Windows and Linux hosts. VMware says the full Pro feature set—including advanced networking, snapshots, encryption, virtual TPM, and Secure Boot—is available without a purchased license key and is free for all use cases. Check VMware’s current terms and release support when you install it; product licensing and support can change.

Its 26H1 release announcement, dated May 14, 2026, names Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Fedora 43 and 44, SUSE Linux Enterprise 16, openSUSE 16.0, and FreeBSD 15.0 among its newly supported guest operating systems. Confirm the requirements for the exact host, guest, and release rather than assuming every guest feature works on every host.

Choose VirtualBox for hosted portability and exchange
VirtualBox runs on top of an existing operating system. Oracle documents VM portability across supported host platforms, OVF import and export, and Guest Additions features including display-resolution adjustment, shared folders, shared clipboard, drag and drop, and accelerated 3D graphics. Those integrations depend on the guest and host combination; Oracle says guest support varies and near-native performance optimizations apply only to selected operating systems.
Oracle’s version 7.2 table lists Windows 11 hosting on Arm64 as experimental, and says experimental features are not eligible for Oracle support. Oracle also warns that running VMs from competing hypervisors at the same time on one host can cause crashes because they compete for hardware virtualization resources. Avoid overlapping hypervisors unless you have confirmed your setup supports it.

Choose Hyper-V for Windows-native administration
Microsoft says Hyper-V is included in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education. It is also a server role across Windows Server 2025 editions. Check your Windows edition and hardware requirements before planning a deployment around it.

Beyond running isolated development or test environments, Microsoft documents VM snapshots and templates, PowerShell provisioning, nested virtualization, clustering, Shielded VMs, and Azure or hybrid scenarios. If you are using Windows Server, check the licensing terms for your edition and intended VM use; VM rights are not the same across all editions.

Which VM should you use on a Mac?
For Mac-and-Windows workflow integration
Parallels Desktop runs Arm versions of Windows 11 on Apple silicon Macs. Its described integration features include Coherence, shared folders, clipboard, drag and drop, camera integration, and graphics acceleration. Coherence is intended to make Windows applications fit into a Mac desktop workflow, but it does not guarantee that every Windows app, device, or graphics feature will work. Verify the application and peripheral compatibility you actually need, along with current pricing, licensing, and support terms.
Parallels’ advertised setup times and application counts are vendor marketing figures, not independent measures of speed or compatibility. Its comparative performance claims should be treated as Parallels’ claims, not as a neutral ranking.

For VMware features on Intel or Apple silicon Macs
Fusion Pro supports Intel and Apple silicon Macs, but that does not make the two host architectures interchangeable. VMware notes that not all x86 guest features are available on Apple silicon. Check support for the precise guest OS and the applications it must run before moving an existing x86 VM or choosing a guest image.
What is the fastest VM software?
There is no substantiated universal speed winner among these products. Performance changes with host CPU and memory, storage, guest OS, VM allocation, graphics requirements, host workload, and competing virtualization components. A product that feels more responsive for one application or configuration may not be faster for another workload.
Best Value
Vendor feature pages and unrelated user tests do not establish a fair cross-platform ranking. A meaningful comparison requires the same host hardware, operating-system build, guest image, VM settings, workload, graphics configuration, and measurement method. CPU throughput, storage performance, graphics, startup time, and interactive responsiveness are separate outcomes; report which one was measured rather than calling a single result “fastest.”
Quick Recap
- Check architecture and compatibility first. Record the host OS and CPU architecture, the guest OS and architecture, and whether the required applications, peripherals, graphics APIs, and security features are supported.
- Match VM resources. Use the same host, guest image, memory and processor allocation, storage conditions, and graphics settings when comparing platforms.
- Test the work you actually do. Measure the relevant outcome—such as CPU, storage, graphics, startup, or interactive response—using the same workload and method on each candidate.
- Check for conflicts and background load. Note host activity and other virtualization components. Oracle cautions that simultaneously running VMs from competing hypervisors on one host can cause crashes.
Which features matter beyond speed?
- Rollback and experimentation: Snapshots let you preserve a VM state before a change. Microsoft describes them as a safety net for experimentation and rollback.
- Moving VMs between computers: VirtualBox documents portability across supported hosts and OVF import/export. Confirm that the destination supports the VM’s architecture and configuration.
- Sharing files and devices: VirtualBox Guest Additions and Parallels describe shared folders and clipboard integration; Parallels also describes camera integration. Check availability for your guest and host combination.
- Automation and team operations: Hyper-V’s documented PowerShell provisioning, templates, clustering, and Azure or hybrid capabilities make it a natural candidate for Windows-centric IT workflows.
- Security configuration: VMware Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro include virtual TPM and Secure Boot among the listed Pro features; Hyper-V documents Shielded VMs. Validate the requirements of the guest and security policy you must meet.
- Licensing and support: Review current license scope, update path, and support terms. In particular, distinguish VirtualBox’s experimental Arm support from supported configurations, and verify Windows Server VM entitlements for the specific edition.
How to make the choice
- Start with the host. Eliminate products that do not support your operating system and CPU architecture.
- Confirm the guest and applications. Check whether the guest architecture and the applications, peripherals, graphics, and security features you need are supported. Do not assume Windows applications behave identically in every Mac VM.
- Choose for your workflow. Favor Hyper-V for Windows-native management and IT features, VirtualBox for hosted portability and exchange, VMware for its desktop VM feature set across its supported hosts, or Parallels for an integrated Mac workflow.
- Verify the practical terms. Confirm the current release, requirements, licensing, and support status for your exact configuration before committing a VM or team workflow to it.
- Test before migrating important work. Try the required guest and applications on the actual host, then validate snapshots or export/import if your plan depends on recovery or moving the VM.
