Short answer: Hulu says it does not work with anonymizers or proxy services, including VPNs, so no VPN can be described as officially supported or guaranteed to work. Some providers publish Hulu-specific instructions, and TechRadar reported successful Hulu tests with several VPNs in February 2026, but those results do not establish that a connection will work for you now. If Hulu reports an anonymous proxy, first check whether you are using a VPN or proxy and review your plan’s location rules.
Does Hulu work with a VPN?
Hulu’s US Help Center says, “Hulu doesn’t work with anonymizers or proxy services.” It tells users identified as using one of these services to disable it before streaming. That is Hulu’s published policy; it does not prove that every VPN connection will fail on every attempt. It does mean a VPN should not be presented as an approved or dependable way to access Hulu.

Hulu says it may use different technologies and methods to verify location, and that location sharing may be required for some content. Its subscriber agreement does not identify one universal detection method. It would therefore be misleading to claim that a particular IP, DNS, GPS, or device check is always the reason a connection is blocked. Hulu Subscriber Agreement
What the available VPN evidence can—and cannot—tell you
VPN companies publish setup and troubleshooting guidance, but their support pages are not independent confirmation that Hulu authorizes their services or that access will last. Results can vary with the server, device, account, location, and date. The evidence below does not support a current, matched test or a reliable ranking of five providers.

| Source | What it says | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN support, updated July 21, 2026 | For US users having streaming trouble, it suggests switching server location and force-closing and reopening the Hulu app after a change. It also says users must not use its service to circumvent geographic restrictions imposed by content providers and are responsible for following third-party terms. ExpressVPN troubleshooting for Hulu | ExpressVPN provides troubleshooting steps; it does not establish guaranteed access or Hulu approval. |
| NordVPN support | A page titled “Hulu doesn’t work with NordVPN” addresses VPN-related errors and content that fails to load, with troubleshooting steps. NordVPN troubleshooting for Hulu | Even a provider with Hulu-related guidance acknowledges that users may encounter problems. |
| TechRadar, February 6, 2026 | Its review reported successful Hulu tests with services it reviewed, including NordVPN and ExpressVPN. TechRadar’s Hulu VPN review | It describes that publisher’s results under its test conditions on that date—not Hulu authorization, results for every setup, or reliability in October 2026. |
Because these sources do not compare five services under the same conditions, they cannot substantiate a “five best” list for 2026. A dated test can be useful evidence of a result, but it is not a promise of future availability.
Why does Hulu say “anonymous proxy detected”?
Hulu’s message means it has identified the connection as using an anonymizer or proxy service under its stated policy. Hulu does not publish one universal technical explanation for each block, so the message alone does not establish which specific check triggered it.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
If you are using a VPN or proxy, Hulu’s instruction is to disable it. If you are not knowingly using one, check whether a proxy or VPN is enabled in your device’s network settings or through another app, then try Hulu again. Avoid assuming that changing a server or device will resolve the issue; provider troubleshooting steps may help with a provider’s service, but they cannot override Hulu’s policy.

Hulu’s location guidance distinguishes its on-demand service from Hulu + Live TV. Standard Hulu and Hulu Premium are described as available within the United States, including Puerto Rico and US military bases. Hulu + Live TV is intended for a single US residence and is not available internationally, in US territories, or on US military bases; Hulu describes an exception for service members receiving internet service directly from a base. Hulu + Live TV Home network
For Hulu + Live TV, Hulu requires a residential, non-mobile Home network. It says a Home network cannot be set using mobile wireless service, a hotspot, or shared Wi-Fi. Hulu allows a Home network change up to four times in a 12-month period. Mobile viewers must check in from Home every 30 days to continue watching Live TV away from home. These are Hulu service rules, not VPN performance figures. Hulu’s Home network guidance
What to do when Hulu will not stream
- Read the error and identify your plan. Check whether the issue is an anonymous proxy message, a location restriction, or a Live TV Home network problem. The plan distinction matters: Hulu + Live TV has specific Home network requirements.
- Disable a VPN or proxy if one is active. This follows Hulu’s stated direction for users it identifies as using an anonymizer or proxy.
- Check the Home network for Live TV. Use a residential, non-mobile connection for the Home setting, and make sure the account has not reached Hulu’s limit on Home changes.
- If you use a VPN, consult its support page without treating it as a guarantee. For example, ExpressVPN advises switching server location and restarting the Hulu app after a change. Hulu’s policy remains controlling, and the provider itself says not to use its VPN to circumvent content-provider geographic restrictions.
- Contact Hulu if the error persists after you have checked the relevant settings. Hulu can clarify whether the issue concerns account eligibility, location, or a Live TV Home network rule.
Can you watch Hulu + Live TV away from Home?
Hulu’s guidance allows mobile viewers to watch Live TV away from their Home network, subject to checking in from Home every 30 days. The Home network itself must be residential and non-mobile, and Hulu + Live TV is not available internationally, in US territories, or on US military bases, subject to the stated base-internet exception. A VPN does not change those plan rules.
