Which USB Ports Are the Fastest?

USB 80Gbps is the top general USB data-rate tier, but connector shape does not reveal port speed. Check the device, cable, and peripheral capabilities.

The fastest USB data-rate tier in USB-IF’s consumer guidance is USB 80Gbps, supported by USB4 Version 2.0. But the fastest port on your computer is the one whose documented speed matches its host, cable, and connected device—not necessarily the port with a USB-C socket.

USB port speeds, from fastest to slowest

USB-IF recommends naming data rates as USB 5Gbps, USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps, USB 40Gbps, and USB 80Gbps. The top tier is USB 80Gbps, enabled by USB4 Version 2.0. These are signaling-rate capabilities, not guaranteed file-copy speeds. USB-IF’s January 2024 data performance guidance sets out the consumer-facing names.

USB data-rate name Capability described in USB-IF guidance
USB 80Gbps Up to 80Gbps; supported by USB4 Version 2.0
USB 40Gbps Up to 40Gbps; a USB4 tier
USB 20Gbps Up to 20Gbps; USB 3.2 can use two 10Gbps lanes
USB 10Gbps Up to 10Gbps; a USB 3.2 tier
USB 5Gbps Up to 5Gbps; a USB 3.2 tier

USB-IF’s USB 3.2 overview describes the 5, 10, and 20Gbps tiers and notes that interoperating devices connect at the lowest speed capability they share. So a 20Gbps port does not make a slower peripheral or cable operate at 20Gbps.

What does “120Gbps USB” mean?

USB4 Version 2.0 allows an optional asymmetric mode for certain applications, such as high-performance displays: up to 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps in the other. This is not a normal 120Gbps bidirectional connection, nor does it replace USB 80Gbps as the top general data-rate tier named in USB-IF’s consumer guidance. USB-IF described the mode in its October 18, 2022 USB4 Version 2.0 announcement.

Is USB-C faster than USB-A?

No connector shape guarantees a particular data rate. USB-C is a connector type, not a speed rating; products with USB-C sockets can support different USB capabilities. USB-IF’s Type-C guidance says, “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®.” It also gives the example that a USB 2.0 Type-C cable supports USB 2.0 operation, up to 480Mbps.

A USB-A port can be faster than a USB-C port if its documented data capability is higher. To identify the fastest one, compare the published data rate rather than the socket’s appearance, color, or shape.

How to find the fastest port on your device

  1. Check the exact model’s official specifications or manual. Look up each port’s data capability. Do not infer speed from whether it is USB-A or USB-C.
  2. Compare the stated rates. Choose the port with the highest explicitly documented data rate; check whether it is USB4 or USB 3.2 as well as the rate.
  3. Match the whole connection. The host port, peripheral, and cable all need suitable capabilities. USB-IF says the host, device, and full-featured cable must support the relevant capabilities to reach the maximum rate.
  4. Check labels against the manufacturer’s documentation. Port markings can be clues, but verify ambiguous markings in the manual or specifications.
  5. For a dock or display, account for shared bandwidth. USB4 dynamically shares its high-speed link across data and display protocols, so the available capacity depends on the host, connected devices, and traffic. See USB-IF’s USB4 overview.

Why advertised speed is not file-copy speed

Gbps means gigabits per second; GB/s means gigabytes per second. USB-IF’s tier figures are in Gbps and describe signaling performance. They do not establish a sustained file-copy rate for a particular computer, cable, or storage device. Actual transfers depend on the capabilities of the components in the connection, and USB4 may also share link capacity between data and display traffic. No universal practical file-copy result follows from a port’s tier alone.

When choosing between ports, compare their documented maximum data rates, whether each supports USB4 or USB 3.2, whether the connection runs directly from the host or through a hub or dock, and the rated speeds of the cable and peripheral.
