For most buyers, the Hisense PX3-PRO is the more rounded ultra short throw (UST) projector; choose the Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS800 if brightness in a room with less light control matters most. RTINGS’ comparison, updated August 17, 2026, finds the Epson noticeably brighter, while the Hisense has better contrast, punchier colors and a wider feature set. Neither is best for every room: the screen, lighting and intended use should guide the choice.
What an ultra short throw projector does
A UST projector creates a large image while sitting close to the wall or screen, avoiding the long throw distance and ceiling placement that conventional projectors often need. Both models considered here are designed for home viewing and include built-in sound, though a separate audio system may still suit a dedicated theater setup better. Projection is a different tradeoff from a television: it can deliver a much larger image, but room light and screen choice affect the result. Epson notes that current OLED and QLED TVs offer better color and black performance than the LS800, a useful consideration if picture performance in a bright room matters more than screen size.

Choose the Epson LS800 when room brightness is the priority
RTINGS describes the LS800 as noticeably brighter than the PX3-PRO and better suited to rooms without light control. Epson specifies 4,000 lumens for both color and white brightness. Those figures are manufacturer specifications; they do not by themselves guarantee a particular perceived brightness, which also depends on screen size, screen surface and ambient light.

Epson says the LS800 is designed to sit below and centered with its SilverFlex Ultra ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen or a third-party ALR screen. That placement makes careful setup important: small changes in position can affect alignment and image geometry.

Do you need a special screen for a UST projector?
Not in every setup, but a UST-compatible screen can make a meaningful difference, particularly in a room with ambient light. UST ALR screens use an optical surface intended to reject light arriving from above while reflecting light from the low-mounted projector toward viewers. A standard screen or wall may work in some rooms, but the cited sources do not establish one universal screen requirement for all UST models and conditions.
- Match the screen to UST projection geometry; a screen designed for a conventional projector may not be suitable.
- Check that the screen’s intended image size works with the projector and the space available.
- Consider where room light comes from. An ALR screen may help with overhead light, but performance still depends on the room and setup.
- For the LS800, Epson names its SilverFlex Ultra screen and third-party ALR screens as options.
See the explanation of how ALR screens work before selecting a screen.

What to check before buying and installing
- Assess the room. Decide whether you can darken it during viewing. If not, the LS800’s brightness advantage is relevant, but screen choice and lighting remain important.
- Pick an image size and screen. Confirm the screen is intended for UST use and that its size suits the room. The PX3-PRO’s stated maximum is 150 inches.
- Plan the projector position. UST models sit close to and low in front of the screen. For the LS800, Epson specifies placement below and centered with a compatible screen.
- Match features to use. For gaming, verify the PX3-PRO’s input and mode specifications for your regional model and equipment. For a brighter room, compare the Epson’s stated output and the room’s light conditions.
- Verify the offer. Current street prices, availability, warranty terms and package contents are not established by the cited sources. Check the seller’s current listing and the manufacturer’s regional specifications before purchase.
