HDMI handles most modern audio-and-video sources; a port labeled HDMI ARC or eARC is the one to check for a soundbar or receiver. Optical is an audio-only alternative, while USB, Ethernet, antenna, and legacy ports each have narrower, model-dependent uses.
How to choose the right TV connections
- List your devices. Note whether each sends video, audio, or both—for example, a console, streaming player, antenna feed, or soundbar.
- Match each device’s output to a TV input. Count the ports you need and check their labels, location, and supported features in the TV’s manual. Port inventories and capabilities vary by model; Sony recommends checking the reference or startup guide for the layout (Sony TV ports and connections).
- Check performance requirements. For a console or PC, compare the desired resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and gaming features with the specifications of the particular HDMI input—not just the TV’s headline specifications.
- Check both ends of an audio connection. Confirm that the TV and sound system have compatible ARC/eARC or optical ports and support the audio formats you want.
- Buy a cable or adapter only after checking the match. Use the TV and device manuals to identify cable capability or a model-specific legacy adapter.
If more than one connection could work, compare device compatibility, whether it carries audio, video, or both, supported formats, available port locations, and any extra cable or adapter required.

Which port should you use for each device?
HDMI: consoles, streaming players, disc players, and computers
HDMI is the usual first choice for a modern source because one cable can carry digital video and audio. Connect a console, streaming device, Blu-ray player, or computer to an HDMI input that supports the output you need. Inputs on the same TV may differ, so check the model’s manual to find the port that supports your required resolution, refresh rate, HDR, or gaming feature (Sony connection guidance; Sony Help Guide).
The HDMI Forum’s November 28, 2017 announcement for the HDMI 2.1 specification listed formats including 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz, as well as eARC, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). It also described bandwidth capability up to 48 Gbps and the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable for the specification’s high-bandwidth requirements (HDMI Forum HDMI 2.1 announcement). These are specification capabilities, not a guarantee that every TV, HDMI input, source device, or cable supports them. Match the cable to the features supported at both ends; Sony also advises using an appropriate cable for high-quality 4K content (Sony Help Guide).

HDMI ARC or eARC: soundbars and AV receivers
ARC (Audio Return Channel) and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) let a TV send audio to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver over HDMI. Connect the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC to a compatible ARC/eARC port on the audio system; an ordinary HDMI input may not provide the return-audio function. eARC supports high-bitrate audio formats and can carry audio from broadcast, satellite, streaming, or source devices to a compatible soundbar or receiver over one HDMI cable (HDMI Forum eARC overview).
Check both manuals before connecting: eARC support does not guarantee that every older ARC device will work with every eARC device. If the audio system does not support a usable ARC/eARC connection, check whether both devices have compatible optical ports instead (Sony Help Guide).

Optical digital audio: an audio-only alternative
An optical output sends digital audio from the TV to a compatible soundbar, receiver, or home-theater system. It can be useful when the audio system lacks ARC/eARC. Optical does not carry video, so it cannot replace HDMI for a console or streaming player. Confirm the formats and output settings supported by the TV and receiving device (Sony TV connections; Sony Help Guide).

A TV’s USB port may support USB storage or other peripherals, but functions vary by model and sometimes by port. Check the manual for the specific port before expecting it to play a particular file, power a device, record programs, or support a network adapter. Sony’s connection guide, for example, lists USB storage devices among supported connection examples; that does not establish the same functions for every TV (Sony Help Guide).

LAN or Ethernet: wired network connection
The LAN port connects the TV to a router with an Ethernet cable, offering a wired alternative to Wi-Fi. Whether to use it depends on your network and how the TV is installed; a wired connection is an option, not a general requirement for streaming (Sony TV connections).
RF or antenna input: antenna and compatible cable feeds
The coaxial RF input is for a compatible antenna, cable feed, or external box. The connector’s shape alone does not confirm that the TV’s tuner supports a particular broadcast standard or that a cable service is compatible. Check the TV’s tuner specifications and the broadcast or cable system used in your region (Sony TV connections; Sony Help Guide).

Composite and component: older equipment
Composite and component inputs can connect some legacy video equipment, but many TVs omit them, and some models require a specific breakout or extension cable. Before buying an adapter, verify the TV’s manual, the adapter type, and the source device’s output. An adapter that fits one TV is not necessarily suitable for another (Sony Help Guide).
What to check before buying a cable or adapter
- For HDMI: Match cable capability to the resolution, refresh rate, and features supported by the source and the specific TV input. The HDMI Forum’s 2017 specification announcement identifies the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable for HDMI 2.1’s high-bandwidth requirements; do not infer that you need it unless your devices’ supported features call for it (HDMI Forum).
- For sound: Verify that the TV’s ARC/eARC or optical output matches an input on the soundbar or receiver, and check audio-format support at both ends.
- For Ethernet: Buy an Ethernet cable only if you plan to connect the TV’s LAN port to the router by wire.
- For older gear: Identify the exact composite/component connection and any required model-specific adapter in the TV manual before ordering.
The exact TV model matters: manufacturer port guides and model-family manuals describe different layouts and feature support, so use them to confirm the input count, labels, formats, and adapters for your set (Sony TV ports and connections; Sony Help Guide).
