Which TV Picture Settings Should You Change First?

Set picture mode first, then make small, model-specific changes to brightness, color temperature and motion processing. Check HDR and SDR independently.

Change Picture Mode first. It applies a bundle of image choices, so it gives you a useful baseline before you adjust brightness, color temperature, or motion processing. Then make small changes while watching familiar content, and check HDR and SDR separately if your TV stores separate settings for them.

Which TV picture settings should you change first?

  1. Picture mode: Start with the preset closest to your goal. For an accuracy-oriented image, try Filmmaker Mode if your TV offers it; Movie or Cinema modes are common alternatives. A mode can change several characteristics at once, including color temperature, white balance, and motion processing, and Filmmaker Mode may limit some adjustments. Judge the result with content you know. RTINGS’ TV calibration guide explains the role of picture modes.
  2. Brightness or backlight: Adjust gradually for your room and viewing comfort. The label and effect vary by TV, and presets may also change brightness and contrast. Read the on-screen help or your model’s manual rather than applying a number meant for another television. TCL’s picture-settings guidance notes that presets can affect these controls.
  3. Color temperature or white balance: This changes the overall warmth or coolness of the image. If the picture looks too blue, try a warmer option and see whether you prefer it; that is a viewing preference, not a universal calibration value. Samsung describes white balance as a color-temperature adjustment, while TCL explains the warmer-to-cooler shift in its TV settings guide.
  4. Motion processing: Test motion or picture-clarity controls with familiar content that has movement. Reduce or turn them off if the result looks distracting. There is no single preferred amount for every viewer or type of content; Samsung lists picture-clarity controls in its picture settings support.
  5. Other controls: Adjust contrast, black level, color, tint, or sharpness only when you can identify a specific problem. Make small changes and check the effect. Control names, groupings, and behavior differ across models, as the support guides from Samsung, TCL, and Sony illustrate.

Movie or Filmmaker Mode: which should you use?

Choose based on the image you want, not just the name of the preset. Filmmaker Mode is an accuracy-oriented starting point when available. Movie or Cinema modes are common alternatives if you prefer their result or want controls that a particular Filmmaker Mode restricts. Brighter or more vivid presets may suit a brightly lit room or personal taste, but they are not automatically more accurate.

Compare modes using the same familiar scene and the type of content you usually watch. A preset can change multiple settings together, so a difference you notice may not come from brightness alone. The available modes and their effects depend on the TV.

Do HDR and SDR need separate picture adjustments?

Check both. Some TVs store picture settings separately for HDR and SDR, so a change made while watching one type of content may not carry over to the other. Use the TV’s picture menu while the relevant content is playing, then judge each signal type on its own. RTINGS notes that HDR and SDR settings may be separate.

How do you stop motion smoothing?

Look in the picture menu for motion, picture clarity, or a similarly named control; terminology differs by manufacturer and model. Reduce the processing or disable it, then replay a scene with movement to see whether the change suits you. If the setting is hard to identify, consult the TV’s on-screen help or manual rather than guessing from another brand’s menu. Samsung’s support page, for example, calls out picture clarity settings.

Why not copy a universal set of picture values?

There is no defensible numeric recipe that fits every TV and room. Picture controls can behave differently by model, signal type, software, and input, while brightness and motion preferences are personal. Make changes by observing your own screen, and avoid importing values from a different model.

These menu adjustments are not the same as measured calibration. Basic changes can be made at home; true calibration uses specialized measuring equipment. If you want measured accuracy beyond adjustments by eye, professional calibration is an optional next step. RTINGS distinguishes basic home adjustments from measurement-based calibration.
