Motion processing is one common restriction, but some basic controls can remain available. A greyed-out setting may therefore reflect the selected mode or signal format rather than a fault.
Why a picture setting may be unavailable
Game mode reduces processing that can add delay between a console’s output and what appears on screen. The trade-off is model-specific: a TV may disable a particular processing feature, lock the picture preset, or leave many adjustments available. Automatic switching can matter as much as manually selecting Game mode.
- Game mode: The TV’s low-latency picture preset may make some processing controls unavailable.
- ALLM: Auto Low Latency Mode lets a compatible console signal that the TV should use a low-latency mode. The TV may switch picture modes automatically or restrict adjustments.
- VRR: Variable Refresh Rate or its associated HDMI signal format can impose additional picture-mode restrictions on some setups.
These behaviors are not interchangeable: a control that is locked because ALLM is set to Auto may become adjustable when ALLM is turned off, while a restriction tied to VRR may require a different signal-format setting.
Examples from LG and Sony TVs
LG: TruMotion and ALLM
LG says TruMotion cannot be set when Game mode is selected in the relevant TV and console setup. TruMotion is motion smoothing; disabling it can mean less interpolation, rather than a problem with the TV. LG also describes a separate ALLM restriction: “When ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) is set to [Auto] to increase response speed for input signal from the game console, the picture quality of your LG TV cannot be adjusted.” LG recommends turning ALLM off when you want to customize picture quality. Game behavior can vary by title and setup.

LG’s guidance also discusses turning ALLM off for some games running below 60 Hz when the viewer wants to use TruMotion. This is a trade-off, not a universal fix: changing low-latency behavior can affect responsiveness, and the relevant controls vary by model. See LG’s Game Optimizer and ALLM guidance and its PS5 troubleshooting page.
Sony: VRR can lock Picture mode, while basic controls may remain
Sony says a TV can automatically switch its content type or Picture mode to Game when ALLM is active. On the cited XBR-65X900H setup, using HDMI signal format Enhanced format (VRR) prevents changing Picture mode away from Game. That example applies to that model and setup, not every Sony TV.

Game mode does not necessarily disable brightness, contrast, and colour intensity: Sony says those controls can be adjusted in Game mode in its PS5 guidance. Conversely, Sony’s guide for 2023-or-later models lists functions such as motion blur reduction and Auto local dimming among controls disabled in Game mode. Its OLED guide describes Reality Creation/Resolution as detail-enhancement and noise-reduction processing, with Game-mode limitations that depend on the model. Check the documentation for your exact model before assuming any one control behaves the same across Sony TVs. See Sony’s PS5 picture-mode guidance, Sony’s picture-adjustment guide, and Sony’s OLED picture-adjustment guide.
How to work out what is locking a setting
- Identify the TV’s exact model. Find the model number in the TV’s settings or on its label, then look up the matching support guide. Menu names and available controls differ by model and year.
- Check how Game mode was selected. If the TV switches to Game automatically, check whether ALLM is enabled on both the TV and the connected console. As a diagnostic, turn ALLM off and see whether the picture control becomes available. This may change responsiveness.
- Check VRR and the HDMI signal format. If VRR is active, note the TV’s HDMI signal-format setting and consult the model guide. On Sony’s cited XBR-65X900H setup, Enhanced format (VRR) locks Picture mode to Game.
- Identify what kind of control is unavailable. Motion smoothing, local dimming, detail enhancement, and the overall Picture mode can each have different restrictions. Record whether the setting is greyed out, forced to a value, or absent from the menu.
- Use the model-specific guide to decide whether to change the setting. If you want a locked adjustment, disabling ALLM or VRR may help in some configurations, but can change low-latency or variable-refresh behavior. Avoid turning off Game mode simply to unlock a control if responsiveness matters to you.
What to include when seeking exact instructions
For precise menu steps, provide the TV’s full model number, model year if known, connected console, and whether ALLM or VRR is active. Without those details, a general list of supposedly disabled settings is likely to be misleading.
