To fix Fire TV buffering or playback errors, first find out whether the problem affects your whole network, one app, or the Fire TV itself. Check the Fire TV Network Status tool, restart the relevant equipment, and only then move on to app resets or a factory reset. This sequence helps avoid erasing settings or buying hardware before you know what is wrong.
Find out what is affected
Start with the scope of the problem: does every streaming app buffer, does just one app fail, or is the entire Fire TV frozen? Then check another device on the same home network. If several devices are offline, Amazon says there may be a network outage; a Fire TV reset will not fix an outage. See Amazon’s network troubleshooting steps.

Diagnose the Fire TV’s network connection
Buffering can be caused by the Wi-Fi link between the Fire TV and router, or by the router’s connection to the internet. The Network Status tool helps distinguish those two links and may offer recommendations. On some compatible devices, it also provides a speed test and advanced information such as data usage. Amazon’s instructions are at Fire TV Network Status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings, then select Network.
- Press the Play/Pause button on the remote to open Network Status.
- Review whether the issue is the Fire TV-to-router connection or the router-to-internet connection, and follow any recommendations shown.
If Wi-Fi is the likely cause
Try the least disruptive fixes first. Restart the Fire TV and toggle Wi-Fi off and back on. If that does not help, forget the network and reconnect by selecting it in Settings > Network and entering its password again. Amazon also recommends moving the Fire TV and router closer together when possible.

Restart the modem and router by unplugging their power. Bring the modem online first, then reconnect the router. Wait for both to reconnect before testing playback. If other devices on the network remain offline, contact your internet provider or check for an outage rather than repeatedly changing Fire TV settings.
Amazon advises a factory reset only after the earlier Wi-Fi steps fail. A reset erases device settings, so use it as an escalation—not as the first response to buffering.

If only one app buffers or fails
When other apps work normally, focus on the affected app before changing the whole network. Restart the Fire TV, then clear that app’s cache and data. Cache is temporary data; clearing data resets the app and may require you to sign in or configure it again. Amazon describes these steps for intermittent app problems and low-storage messages at managing apps on Fire TV.

If Prime Video says “Unable to play”
For Prime Video errors such as “Unable to play” or “Something went wrong,” check for a Fire TV software update, restart Fire TV and the modem/router, and clear Prime Video’s cache and data. Amazon’s Prime Video troubleshooting guidance also calls out HDCP compatibility if the Fire TV connects to the display through HDMI.
For HD playback, Amazon specifies HDCP 1.4; for UHD or HDR playback, it specifies HDCP 2.2. Check that the HDMI cable and display support the version required for the content. Replacing a cable is not a universal fix for buffering, but it can address an HDCP-related playback problem.

If the Fire TV or screen freezes
If menus stop responding or the screen remains frozen, check the physical setup as well as the software. Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input used by Fire TV, use the supplied power cable and adapter, and connect the Fire TV directly to the TV instead of through an HDMI hub. Amazon’s steps are on its frozen-screen troubleshooting page.
- Hold Select and Play/Pause together on the remote for about five seconds to try a restart.
- If it remains frozen, unplug the power cord, wait 60 seconds, and reconnect it.
For a responsive device, Amazon’s general restart path is Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. Its general support instructions also describe unplugging the power cord or adapter and reconnecting it after three seconds; follow the frozen-device guidance above when the screen itself is unresponsive. See Amazon’s restart instructions.

When a wired connection or better Wi-Fi may help
Consider an Ethernet connection only when Network Status points to a weak or unstable Wi-Fi link between the Fire TV and router, or when you want to test whether Wi-Fi is the cause. Amazon recommends Ethernet where possible during Wi-Fi setup, but some Fire TV devices require an Ethernet adapter. Confirm adapter compatibility with your exact model before buying one. The guidance is in Amazon’s network setup information.
A compatible Wi-Fi 6E-or-newer router may be an option for supported Fire TV models, while a mesh system may help cover a larger home. Neither is a guaranteed cure: first determine whether the issue is Wi-Fi coverage, the internet connection, a single app, or HDMI/HDCP compatibility. Amazon lists these as Wi-Fi considerations in its network troubleshooting guidance.
