For obstacle-course racing plus regular running, choose a watch by the features you will use: the Garmin Instinct 3 Solar is the clearest documented option here for tracking obstacle and between-obstacle segments, while the COROS PACE 3, Polar Pacer, and Garmin Forerunner 570 or 970 offer different running, training, and recovery tools. No model is established as a universal winner, and there is no comparative field testing behind this guide.
What matters in a watch for Spartan races and running?
A watch has two jobs in this use case. During training, GPS modes, running data, battery life, and training or recovery features matter. On race day, secure fit, usable controls, and how the watch is meant to be used around water, mud, and obstacles are practical considerations.

- Obstacle tracking: Check whether the exact model records obstacle segments, or whether a lap workflow will meet your needs.
- Running and GPS: Compare supported positioning modes and the data the watch displays during a run. Garmin’s running-watch comparison identifies multiband GPS as a model differentiator, not a feature to assume across the brand.
- Battery in your chosen mode: Activity-mode runtime is more useful than smartwatch-mode days for estimating whether a watch suits a long event. Enabled features and settings affect actual battery life.
- Fit and controls: Size, weight, button usability, and secure wear matter in a race, but individual fit has not been tested here.
- Training ecosystem: Compare the specific training, sleep, and recovery features and companion software you will use.
- Extras: Display type, music, payments, maps, and phone features are secondary unless they matter to you.
Garmin’s running-watch comparison is useful for checking model-level differences. For current prices and local stock, check the exact variant in your region; neither is established here.
How do the documented watch options differ?
| Model | What its maker documents | What to check for your use |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin Instinct 3 Solar | Its manual documents an Obstacle Racing activity that records time on each obstacle and time running between obstacles. | Check the exact model’s current GPS, battery, fit, water-resistance, care, and warranty information. The manual feature is not comparative durability evidence. |
| Garmin Forerunner 570 and 970 | Garmin announced these running and triathlon watches in May 2025, describing training and recovery tools, race pacing, and multiband GPS features. | Confirm which features apply to the exact model and regional configuration; the available information does not establish obstacle-segment recording for these models. |
| COROS PACE 3 | COROS presents it as a lightweight GPS sport watch for runners and multisport athletes, with a training-software system. | Check the battery estimate for the activity mode and features you plan to use. COROS notes that settings and enabled features can reduce expected battery life; obstacle segmentation is not established here. |
| Polar Pacer | Polar describes GPS, wrist heart rate, training, sleep, and recovery tools, plus an adaptive plan for several common running distances. | Obstacle-segmentation capability is not established here. Check the exact model’s battery and water-resistance guidance for your intended use. |
These are source-supported options, not a tested ranking. Garmin’s Instinct 3 Solar Series Owner’s Manual says: “When you participate in an obstacle course race, you can use the Obstacle Racing activity to record your time on each obstacle and your time running between obstacles.” Do not assume other Garmin watches offer the same activity without checking their manuals.

Garmin’s May 15, 2025 announcement describes the Forerunner 570 and 970. COROS provides details for the PACE 3, including its battery-life qualification. Polar describes the Pacer and its running and recovery features. Check those model pages and manuals for current configurations rather than inferring features from a brand name.
What should Spartan racers consider about mud and water?
Spartan’s US apparel guidance says participants are likely to get wet or muddy and recommends lightweight apparel that drains well. That is a reason to consider water exposure and secure wear, not proof that any particular watch will withstand a course’s mud, impact, immersion, or snagging. Review the manufacturer’s water-resistance, care, warranty, and operating guidance for the exact model.

How to choose for your training and event
- If obstacle splits are a priority: Start with the Instinct 3 Solar’s documented Obstacle Racing activity, then confirm that its other running, fit, and battery features suit you.
- If your main priority is running training: Compare the Forerunner 570 or 970, PACE 3, and Pacer on the specific GPS, training, recovery, and interface features you value.
- If the event is long: Compare activity-mode battery estimates using the GPS and other features you expect to enable. COROS’s ultra battery guidance explains that settings and enabled features can affect runtime. Allow for your own settings and event duration rather than treating an advertised figure as guaranteed.
- Before race day: Check the current manual and manufacturer guidance, confirm the watch fits securely and its controls are usable for you, and review your event’s current rules.
What the available evidence cannot establish
There is no controlled cross-brand GPS-accuracy comparison, durability trial, or firsthand testing here, so a claim that one watch is objectively most accurate or toughest would not be supported. A COROS community discussion asks whether a PACE-series watch can withstand Spartan mud, but it is an anecdotal question, not a durability test. Likewise, a running-watch roundup from Tom’s Guide is that publication’s editorial ranking, not a universal verdict.
