Built-In Chromecast: How to Check Your TV and Confirm It Works

To find out whether your TV has built-in Chromecast, check its setup or settings for Google Cast, then try casting from a supported app while your phone, tablet, or computer and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network. If the TV appears in the app’s Cast device list and connects, it can receive Cast through that app. If it does not appear, check settings and network conditions before concluding the feature is absent.

What “built-in Chromecast” means

“Built-in Chromecast” is a common way to describe a TV’s ability to receive streams using Google Cast. Google’s support materials call the capability Google Cast. It is part of the TV, unlike a separate Chromecast with Google TV, which plugs into an HDMI port and needs its own power and setup.

TV brands and models handle setup differently. Android TV and Google TV enable Cast during setup; other compatible TVs may require you to activate it during setup, in settings, or through a brand-specific dashboard. A brand name alone does not prove that a particular model supports Cast.

Check your TV in three steps

  1. Find the exact model number. Check the label on the TV or its About or System information screen. Look up that model in the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation; support can vary by model and software.
  2. Look through setup and TV menus. Search the initial setup flow, settings, or dashboard for Google Cast or Cast. The menu name and location vary. Google gives Vizio’s setup flow and LG Home Hub as examples of where Cast-related options may appear, not universal instructions.
  3. Try casting from a supported app. Connect the TV and sending device to the same Wi-Fi network. Open an app with a Cast button, tap or click it, and check the device list for your TV. Button placement differs between apps. Select the TV and confirm that it connects.

If the TV appears and connects, that confirms the current app and device can cast to it. If it does not appear, a single failed discovery attempt is not proof that the TV lacks built-in Cast.

If the TV does not appear in the Cast list

  • Confirm that the TV and sending device are on the same Wi-Fi network and that the app supports Cast.
  • Check whether the app or device needs permission for local-network access.
  • Look in the TV’s settings for a Cast option that may need to be enabled.

For Google TV

Google recommends checking that the Google Cast app is enabled. Open All settings > Apps > See all apps, find Google Cast, and enable it if it is disabled. If it is not listed, show system apps or disabled apps if those options are available. Restart the TV if needed, check the network, and install available system updates before trying again.

When the menu and device list are inconclusive

Consult the manual or support page for the exact TV model. Google’s setup guidance does not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility list, and menus and availability can vary by model, software, region, network, and app.

What to use if your TV lacks built-in Cast

If the manufacturer’s documentation confirms that the TV does not support Google Cast internally, a compatible external streaming device may provide that capability. It connects to an available HDMI input and requires its own setup. Check the TV’s available inputs and the resolution you want before choosing a device.

For Google streaming devices, Google lists HDCP 1.3 or higher as the minimum display requirement and HDCP 2.2 for 4K. Those are requirements for using the external device; they do not indicate whether a TV has built-in Cast.
