There is no streaming service everyone should keep. A subscription is worth paying for when it reliably delivers shows, films, sports or other programming your household actually watches—and its current price and plan terms beat the alternatives of bundling, pausing or subscribing only when a particular title is available. Start with your own viewing and total bill, not a permanent ranking of services.
How to decide whether a streaming service is worth keeping
Judge each recurring charge against the value it provides to your household. A large catalog or a well-known brand is not enough if you rarely use it. Streaming libraries change, and a service’s general identity does not guarantee that a particular title is currently available in your country.

- Viewing: Which shows, films, sports or live programming did someone in your household actually watch recently? What do you expect to watch soon?
- Price and plan: Check the current monthly or annual price, ad tier and plan limits on the provider’s official page. Include the billing date when a price change is pending.
- Overlap: Does another service, bundle or membership you already value cover the same viewing need?
- Timing: Could you subscribe for a month or two when a show or event is available, then pause or cancel?
- Household fit: Consider relevant features and restrictions, such as simultaneous streams, downloads, video quality, live channels and sports. Check the plan itself rather than assuming every tier includes the same features.
For a quick audit, look at the last few months of viewing and mark each subscription as keep, pause or cancel. If you cannot name something the household wants to watch there, pause or cancel it and revisit when a specific need comes up. Check renewal dates and cancellation terms before making the change.

Which services may be worth paying for?
The services below have different strengths, but these are broad positioning descriptions—not promises about a particular title’s availability. Tom’s Guide’s September 6, 2026 report card compares services on price, library, originals and live content, and describes a recent pattern of price increases. It writes: “In the past 12 months, every single streaming service we graded has increased prices.” That is Tom’s Guide’s characterization of the services it graded, not a guarantee about every service or plan.

The table is not a universal ranking: value depends on what is currently available where you live and what your household watches. For services without a price shown, check the provider’s current U.S. plan page rather than relying on older roundups. What do streaming services cost now?
One concrete example of why dates matter is Peacock. Its official Help Center says its new U.S. rates took effect August 18, 2026. For subscribers with earlier subscriptions, the new rates generally apply on a billing date on or after September 17, 2026; promotions continue through their stated period.

The same notice lists these Apple TV and Peacock bundles: Apple TV with Peacock Premium at $17.99/month, and Apple TV with Peacock Premium Plus at $22.99/month. Those bundle prices took effect September 1, 2026. Subscribers who had the bundles before that date move to the new rate on a billing date on or after October 1, 2026. Compare the bundle with the services and tiers you would actually choose separately; the lower combined price is not savings if you would not use both.
Disney+ displayed U.S. rates for new subscriptions starting August 20, 2026, and says existing subscribers see a price change on or after October 21, 2026. Confirm the current plan price and your own billing date with Disney+ before making a comparison. Hulu’s official Help Center describes two Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max bundle options, but their current prices, eligibility and ad tiers should be checked directly before calculating savings.

Should you keep one service or rotate subscriptions?
Keep a service year-round when it has steady use
A continuing subscription can make sense when different people in the household use it regularly, or when it covers a recurring need such as live programming. Compare the cost of the tier you actually need with how often you use its features.
Rotate when your interest comes in waves
If you mainly want one show, a seasonal series or a specific event, consider subscribing only when it is available. Check release timing and cancellation terms, then pause or cancel once you have watched what you came for. Rotation reduces idle months, but it may not suit a household that wants uninterrupted access or uses one service constantly.

Bundle only when both services earn their place
A bundle can change the arithmetic, but compare like with like: the exact plans, ad tiers, billing periods and eligibility. Hulu’s official help information lists two Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max bundle options; its current terms and prices need checking before treating either as a saving. A bundle is not automatically better than rotating services you do not use at the same time.

There is no evidence-based single service to recommend for every household. Keep the service that delivers the most wanted viewing for the price you actually pay, after accounting for overlap and any bundle you already value. If the household’s viewing changes, that answer can change too. The useful question is not “Which service is best?” but “Which subscription would we notice losing before its next renewal?”

Why it is worth auditing the bill
A December 17, 2025 snapshot from the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation summarized consumer reports that U.S. streaming spending averaged $69 per month in 2025, up 13% and nearly $100 from 2024. The committee also cited consumer reports that nearly half of subscribers felt they paid too much and 40% felt the content was not worth the price. These are figures attributed to consumer reports in the committee’s document, not results of a Senate survey. They help explain why checking the total matters, but they do not say what any particular household should keep.
