What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with the network, not the picture: connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet if possible, then use Steam’s performance overlay to spot network-time spikes. If the stream still hitches, try a speed-focused quality preset and tune bandwidth gradually; lower resolution or change encoding options only when the evidence points there. These adjustments involve trade-offs, so the best settings depend on your network, host GPU, client and drivers.
Fix the network path before changing stream quality
Steam recommends a wired connection for the host gaming PC. Ethernet avoids the interference and signal variation that can affect Wi-Fi, making it the best first change when practical. Steam’s advice is to connect the host computer directly to the router; it does not mean a cable will fix encoding delays or controller-input problems by itself. Steam Remote Play describes wired networking as the preferred baseline.

If you need to use Wi-Fi
Try 5 GHz Wi-Fi if the host or client is on a crowded 2.4 GHz network. The 5 GHz band can avoid some congestion, but it has shorter range, so a weak signal may undermine the benefit. Reduce competing network traffic where possible, and check whether the host and client are isolated from each other by router settings. Steam’s Steam Link network guidance covers interference, wireless bands and network setup.

Enable the Remote Play performance overlay in the advanced streaming settings and watch its network-time graph while a game is running. Steam says large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network time and commonly coincide with stutter or freezing. Treat that as a useful clue rather than proof: not every delay is caused by the network.

If the graph spikes at the same time as hitches, work on the connection before lowering resolution. If it stays steady, test other likely factors—such as host encoding load or client decoding compatibility—one change at a time. Steam also provides performance details for examining the active streaming path. Steam’s network guide explains what to look for in the overlay.
Choose a speed-versus-quality setting for the problem you have
Steam’s quality preference is a trade-off, not a free latency reduction. Its “Balanced” and “Fast” choices reduce bandwidth use while lowering visual quality; Steam Link troubleshooting specifically suggests “Fast” when the goal is to reduce network bandwidth. If the connection is the bottleneck, try a speed-focused choice and judge whether it reduces hitches without making the image unacceptably soft. Steam Remote Play’s FAQ describes the speed-versus-quality preference, and its Steam Link connectivity guide recommends “Fast” as a bandwidth-reduction step.

Tune bandwidth to the highest stable setting
Use the bandwidth limit as a gradual tuning control, not as a universal target. Steam suggests starting at 3 Mbit/s, increasing gradually until hitches appear, then stepping back. That figure is an operational starting instruction from Steam Support—not a measured ideal or a guarantee that every network should use 3 Mbit/s. If the stream is already stable, there is no reason to lower the limit just to match it.

Menu labels and paths can differ between Steam client and Steam Link versions.
- Start with a conservative limit if the stream is hitching, then raise it in small increments while playing under the conditions where you normally stream.
- When hitches return, step back to the last setting that remained stable.
- Choose Automatic to restore Steam’s default bandwidth behavior if you want to undo manual tuning.
Steam’s network settings guidance gives the 3 Mbit/s starting procedure, while its connectivity troubleshooting page describes starting low, increasing until problems occur and returning to the last working setting.

Lower resolution only as much as necessary
The Resolution Limit (also described as maximum capture resolution) can reduce the work and data involved in the stream, but it also removes image detail. Find the highest resolution that stays smooth on your setup rather than assuming 720p is the right setting for everyone. Steam’s low-framerate troubleshooting suggests 1280×720 as a test for a struggling stream, not as a mandatory setting. Lowering the game’s own resolution may also help in relevant cases.
Change one resolution control at a time, then compare smoothness and clarity in the same game scene. Steam documents capture-resolution settings in its Remote Play FAQ and discusses 1280×720 in its low-framerate troubleshooting guide.

Test hardware encoding and decoding on your actual devices
Hardware encoding on the host can improve results on some systems, but Steam’s guidance makes clear that behavior depends on the graphics card and setup. Client hardware decoding can also help, while certain NVIDIA-related display incompatibilities may call for enabling client hardware decoding or disabling host hardware encoding. These are troubleshooting branches, not universal recommendations.
- If the host appears to struggle with encoding, test host hardware encoding on and off.
- If the client has display problems or an incompatible decode path, test client hardware decoding and the host encoding option separately.
- Change one option at a time and use the overlay or performance details, where available, to see whether the active encode/decode path changed.
Older Steam Link troubleshooting advice includes GPU-specific recommendations that should not be treated as current rankings across all hardware. For the relevant options and compatibility cases, consult the Steam Remote Play FAQ and Steam Link display troubleshooting.

Use traffic prioritization only when congestion is the issue
If other devices or applications are competing for capacity, Steam suggests prioritizing both the host and client in the router’s QoS or bandwidth-priority settings. Steam also provides a Remote Play network-prioritization option under Steam > Settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options. Router firmware updates may help when the router itself appears to be causing network trouble. These measures are less relevant when the connection is stable and the delay comes from encoding, decoding or another part of the setup. Steam’s network guidance covers prioritization and router-related checks.
A practical order for testing
- Wire the host to the router if feasible; otherwise test a strong 5 GHz connection and reduce competing traffic.
- Turn on the performance overlay and note whether network-time spikes coincide with stutter.
- If network variability is the problem, try Fast or another speed-oriented preference.
- Adjust Limit bandwidth gradually, keeping the highest setting that stays stable.
- If hitches persist, test a lower Resolution Limit—including 1280×720 as a troubleshooting point—then work back toward the sharpest stable image.
- Only then test host encoding and client decoding options individually, using performance details where available.
- Apply QoS or Steam network prioritization if congestion is present, not as a blanket fix for every kind of delay.
Steam’s menu labels can vary by Steam client and Steam Link version: some support pages still use the older “In-Home Streaming” wording. Look for the current Remote Play settings and the controls named Limit bandwidth and Resolution Limit rather than assuming every device has identical navigation.
