No—not simply to get mobile service. 4G LTE still provides cellular service, and a 5G phone can use LTE when 5G is unavailable. To connect to 5G, you generally need carrier coverage where you are, a compatible 5G phone, and a plan that allows 5G access. The 5G label alone does not guarantee a more reliable signal.
What a 5G plan and phone are actually needed for
The FCC lists 4G LTE and 5G-NR as separate mobile technologies and continues to assess LTE availability alongside 5G availability. That means 5G is not a prerequisite for mobile service; LTE remains a distinct option, though this does not mean LTE is equally fast or available everywhere. For 5G access, these pieces generally need to line up:
- Coverage: Your carrier must offer 5G where you want to use it.
- Phone: Your specific model must support the carrier’s 5G service.
- Plan: Your plan must permit 5G access; whether it costs extra depends on the carrier and plan.
- SIM and account compatibility: These can matter too, depending on the carrier and device.
Requirements vary by provider and device. Apple, for example, says iPhone 12 models or later, a provider that supports 5G, and a 5G mobile plan are needed for 5G on iPhone; availability varies by country, region, and provider. Apple’s iPhone 5G support guide is specific to iPhone, not every phone.

What happens when 5G coverage is missing?
A 5G-capable phone does not become useless outside a 5G area. AT&T says, “Your 5G device will still work when you’re not in a 5G area.” Samsung likewise describes a phone falling back to 4G or 3G when 5G is unavailable, and notes that it may switch to LTE during heavy use. AT&T’s 5G device and plan guidance and Samsung’s 5G troubleshooting guidance explain those carrier- and device-dependent conditions.
Seeing 4G or LTE on a 5G phone can therefore be normal. It may indicate that 5G is not available at that spot or that the phone has switched networks; it does not, by itself, show that the phone or plan is defective.

How to check whether your service will be reliable
Reliability depends on the places you use your phone, not just the network generation printed in an advertisement. Check the carrier’s coverage information for the places you live, work, and travel, then verify your exact phone model and plan.
- Check coverage at your regular locations. Use your carrier’s coverage map or support channel for your home, workplace, and common routes. A published coverage area does not establish indoor reception or performance at every address.
- Confirm exact device compatibility. Check the full model number—not only the phone’s marketing name—with the carrier. If you are keeping or changing a SIM, ask whether it is supported for that device and service.
- Read the plan terms. Confirm whether 5G is included, what data and hotspot allowances apply, and whether congestion or other plan rules may affect service. Verizon notes that plan terms can affect data allowances; the network generation alone does not tell you those details. Verizon’s 5G and 4G overview also describes low-band 5G performance as comparable to its 4G LTE, illustrating why the label alone is not a promise of a particular experience.
- Decide whether an upgrade solves your actual problem. A 5G phone is useful if you want 5G and your carrier, plan, and locations support it. If your current LTE phone works for your needs, the 5G label alone is not a reason you must replace it.
Does a 5G plan always cost extra?
No universal pricing rule follows from the technology name. AT&T says 5G access is included at no extra charge on eligible unlimited plans, while Canadian carrier Rogers says its plans include 5G access without an extra charge. Those statements apply to the named providers’ eligible plans, not every carrier or plan, and plan terms can change. Rogers also says its 5G service requires coverage, a compatible device and SIM, and a 5G plan, and that its 4G LTE and 5G networks work together. Rogers’ 5G FAQ is specific to Canada.

Compare the actual plan price and allowances available to you rather than assuming that every 5G plan carries a surcharge—or that 5G is included in every plan.
