Which Star Wars Game Should You Play First? A Guide by Genre and Platform

Start with the Star Wars game that matches your preferred genre and platform. Compare the Jedi story, Outlaws, Squadrons, and Battlefront II.

There is no single best first Star Wars game: choose by the kind of play you want and the platform you own. For a connected, single-player Jedi story, start with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, then play Jedi: Survivor. Choose Star Wars Outlaws for open-world exploration, Star Wars: Squadrons for cockpit-based starfighter combat, or Star Wars Battlefront II for large multiplayer battles.

Choose by the kind of Star Wars game you want

What you want to play Start with Why it fits
A single-player Jedi story Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order It starts Cal Kestis’s story, which continues in Jedi: Survivor.
Open-world exploration Star Wars Outlaws It follows Kay Vess in the first open-world Star Wars game, according to the official game page.
First-person starfighter combat Star Wars: Squadrons Its cockpit-based space combat includes a single-player campaign, multiplayer dogfights, and fleet battles, as described by EA.
Large battles across the films’ eras Star Wars Battlefront II EA describes multiplayer battles spanning three eras, alongside a single-player story.

These are genre matches, not a ranked list of which game is objectively best. Pick the row that matches how you want to play; then confirm the platform and current store listing before buying.

For a connected Jedi story, play Fallen Order before Survivor

Begin with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order if you want a story-led, single-player Jedi action-adventure. Continue with Jedi: Survivor afterward: the official StarWars.com page describes it as a narratively driven single-player game that picks up five years after the events of Fallen Order.

The sequel’s chronology makes the order clear if you care about following Cal Kestis’s story. EA’s Survivor FAQ lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC storefronts, and says it launched on Amazon Luna on March 27, 2025. Check the listing for your region and store, since platform access can vary.

  • STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)

For open-world exploration, choose Outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws is the match for a scoundrel-led open-world adventure rather than a Jedi story or a focused space-combat game. The official Outlaws page describes Kay Vess’s story and calls it the first open-world Star Wars game. It lists PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Confirm the exact edition and platform in your preferred store.

For starfighter combat, choose Squadrons

Star Wars: Squadrons puts the emphasis on piloting from the cockpit. EA highlights space combat, multiplayer dogfights, and fleet battles, and also describes a single-player campaign. EA lists PC storefronts, PlayStation, and Xbox One; check the specific store page for compatibility with your device and the version available in your region.

Check platform and access before you buy

These games do not share one platform list: some listings are tied to particular console generations, PC storefronts, or services. Treat official platform information as a starting point, not a guarantee of current regional access, price, stock, or online-service availability. Those details can change, so verify the live listing for your region and edition.
