The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A standing desk converter lets you switch between seated and standing work while keeping your existing desk. The right choice depends on desk depth and clearance, the height you need for your keyboard, your display arrangement, and how much effort you want to spend moving the unit—not on a single model being best for everyone.
What kind of standing desk converter fits your setup?
“Stand up desk converter” and “desktop riser” are common ways to describe this category. These products add adjustable work positions to a desk; they do not replace the desk. Ergotron groups converters into three broad approaches: tabletop units, clamp-mounted pedestals, and desk arms. Each interacts with your desk and equipment differently.

- Tabletop: Sits on the desk. Check the available depth, the converter’s footprint, and the room left for other items.
- Clamp-mounted pedestal: Attaches at the desk edge and raises a work surface. Confirm that the desk edge and surrounding area allow the clamp to fit.
- Desk arm: Attaches at the back or side and moves equipment through a different range of positions. Check mounting access, corner constraints, and compatibility with your monitor and keyboard setup.
Ergotron’s converter comparison includes models such as WorkFit-S, WorkFit-LX, WorkFit-A, WorkFit-Z Mini, WorkFit-TL, and WorkFit-TX. Its model-specific distinctions include tall-user reach, screen stability, installation, corner fit, suspended keyboards, independent monitor adjustment, and support for monitors above 30 inches. Start with the workstation you already have, then compare the converter’s dimensions and motion to your actual seated and standing positions. A unit can fit on a desk yet still leave the keyboard or screen at an awkward height.

- Space Efficient 31.5" Surface - The top surface measures 31.5” x 15.7”, which maximizes space while still providing room for dual monitors. The 31.3" x 11.8" (10.5" in center) keyboard tray raises in sync with the top surface to create a comfortable workstation.
- Strong 33 lbs Lift Assist - Go from sitting to standing in one smooth motion using the innovative simple touch height locking mechanism (Adjustment Range: 4.5" to 20"). Lift design elevates straight upwards.
- Very Minimal Assembly - This riser is almost ready to go right out of the box! Place on your existing desk, attach the keyboard tray, and start organizing your workstation.
- We've Got You Covered - Sturdy, high-grade steel design is backed with a 3-Year Manufacturer Warranty and friendly tech support to help with any questions or concerns.
- Measure the desk and mounting area. For a tabletop unit, check usable depth and footprint. For a clamp or arm, verify edge access, attachment space, and any corner or wall restrictions.
- Check keyboard height in both positions. Confirm that the raised work surface can put the keyboard at a comfortable working height seated and standing. If the keyboard and screen sit on different levels, check how each lands relative to you.
- Map the equipment footprint. Count monitors, laptop, keyboard, mouse, and accessories. Compare their combined footprint and weight with the manufacturer’s current surface dimensions and load specification.
- Account for the full lift path. A converter needs room above the desktop as it rises; screens or a laptop may require additional clearance.
- Consider stability and operation. Look for observations about movement or screen vibration in a setup like yours, and compare the lift type, assembly needs, and effort required to lower it.
A named two-tier option: VariDesk Pro Plus 36
The VariDesk Pro Plus 36 is a current two-tier tabletop candidate for someone who wants a separate upper display area and lower keyboard tray. Vari describes it as 36 inches wide, fully assembled, and equipped with a weighted base, spring-assisted lift, dual handles, and 11 height settings. These are manufacturer specifications; confirm them on the current Vari product page, since specifications and offers can change.
Fit is particularly important for this model. Vari recommends a 25.75-inch-deep work surface and enough vertical clearance for a 17.5-inch rise for maximum use; that clearance does not include the height of monitors or a laptop. Measure both the desktop and the space above it before choosing the unit.

TechGearLab reports hands-on testing of the VariDesk Pro Plus. Its reviewers found the model strong on materials and design, while noting that the lift moves forward and that lowering takes some effort. Those observations describe TechGearLab’s evaluation, not a test conducted for this article. See its comparative review for the review context.
How to compare lift, stability, and ease of use
The lift mechanism is only one part of day-to-day usability. TechGearLab says it assessed ergonomics, ease of use, materials, and design, assigning 40%, 30%, 15%, and 15% of its own overall score to those areas respectively. These are that publisher’s rubric weights, not a universal standard for choosing a converter.

- Electric lifts are generally easiest to raise and lower, according to TechGearLab, though individual products differ.
- Spring or gas-spring lifts can require effort to lower. Check model-specific reports and whether the movement seems manageable for you.
- Stability matters with displays. Consider reports of wobble or screen vibration in relation to your monitor size, desk surface, and how you use the workstation.
- Separate keyboard and screen positioning may help preserve a suitable relationship between the two. A two-tier surface or an independently adjustable monitor can offer different ways to position them.
TechGearLab’s comparison also covers products including Smugdesk, VersaDesk PowerPro, VariDesk Pro Plus, and VIVO. Treat its findings as that publisher’s comparative assessment rather than a guarantee that a product will behave identically on every desk.
