The right choice depends on whether you want better TV sound, a full surround setup, or a speaker for music and spatial audio. For a complete home-theater package, consider the Samsung HW-Q990F; for detachable rear speakers, the JBL Bar 1000MK2; and for a compact TV setup, the Sonos Beam (Gen 2). The Sonos Era 300 is a music-focused wireless speaker, while Samsung’s Music Studio 7 is a newly announced option whose independent performance and retail availability are not established by the cited sources.
How to choose between a soundbar and a wireless speaker
Start with the job the system needs to do. A soundbar is designed to improve TV audio; models with a subwoofer and rear speakers can also create a more enveloping home-theater setup. A standalone wireless speaker is primarily for music playback, although some models support spatial audio or can join a compatible home-theater system.

- For TV dialogue and a small footprint: look at a compact soundbar such as the Sonos Beam (Gen 2).
- For a ready-made surround package: compare the included subwoofer and rear speakers, not just the bar.
- For music and spatial audio: consider a Wi-Fi speaker such as the Sonos Era 300, and check its streaming and input options.
Channel counts describe a system’s speaker configuration, not its sound quality. RTINGS’ 2026 guide lists the Beam (Gen 2) as 5.0, the JBL Bar 1000MK2 as 7.1.4, and the Samsung HW-Q990F as 11.1.4. RTINGS’ 2026 soundbar guide distinguishes picks by use case, including compact, mid-range, and large-room systems.

1. Samsung HW-Q990F: a full surround package
RTINGS names the HW-Q990F its best soundbar in its 2026 guide. It is an 11.1.4-channel system with a subwoofer and two satellite speakers, supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and includes room correction. That combination makes it a candidate for buyers who want a substantial surround setup without assembling separate components.

- WIDE, NATURAL SOUND: 2 angled full-range drivers deliver a more realistic, spatial audio experience for overall better TV sound from a small soundbar
- ENHANCED DIALOGUE: This sound bar for smart tv is designed to specifically focus on clarifying and elevating vocals and pronunciation

- SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
Check the model generation and current price before buying: RTINGS notes that the newer HW-Q990H is available. Its observed changes include Sound Elevation, which may affect horizontal dialogue clarity; the older Q990F may be better value if discounted. Confirm compatibility with your TV and the exact model sold in your market.
2. JBL Bar 1000MK2: detachable rear speakers
RTINGS’ mid-range pick is the 7.1.4-channel Bar 1000MK2. Its two detachable, battery-powered satellite speakers can be used separately as wireless speakers, and the system includes a 10-inch subwoofer. It suits buyers who want rear-channel effects without permanently placing wired surrounds.

- Wireless Subwoofer, Place It Anywhere: The wireless subwoofer connects to the soundbar without audio cables, giving you the freedom to place it anywhere in your room for flexible setup.
- Mica-Reinforced Drivers for Greater Accuracy: Mica-reinforced diaphragms increase driver rigidity by up to 30%, helping suppress cone breakup and unwanted resonance. The enhanced stability helps reduce distortion by up to 20%, delivering cleaner, more accurate sound with improved clarity and detail.
- VoiceMX Technology for Clear Dialogue: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. By dynamically boosting the 120 Hz–6 kHz vocal range with adaptive EQ and gain control, dialogue stays clear and easy to follow in any scene.
- BassMX Deep Bass Technology: With an 18 mm high-excursion driver, 6.5 L tuned cabinet, and high-density magnetic circuit, the wireless subwoofer produces strong low-frequency output. BassMX optimizes 45–150 Hz bass for deeper, tighter, and more realistic sound at any volume.
- 240W Peak Output with 2.1 Channel System: Featuring a precision-tuned soundbar and a dedicated wireless subwoofer, the system delivers up to 240W of peak power for room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 95 dB, it reproduces clear dialogue, detailed mids, and impactful bass for movies, music, and gaming.
Its HDMI passthrough is a key constraint: RTINGS reports that the bar’s HDMI inputs top out at 4K/60Hz and do not pass through 4K/120Hz. If a console or other source needs 4K/120Hz, check whether it can connect directly to the TV and whether your setup still meets your audio needs.

RTINGS highlights the Beam (Gen 2) for its small footprint, Dolby Atmos support, and room correction. It is a 5.0-channel soundbar, with the option to expand later using a subwoofer and satellite speakers. It is a sensible shortlist choice for smaller rooms or for buyers who prefer to build a compatible system over time rather than start with a large surround bundle.

4. Sonos Era 300: a spatial-audio wireless speaker
TechRadar’s wireless-speaker guide selects the Era 300 for spatial audio. It supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, AirPlay 2, Hi-Res audio, and Dolby Atmos; line-in is available through an adapter. TechRadar reports strong stereo and Atmos effects, but notes that the bass could be deeper, flawed recordings can sound unforgiving, and the speaker is less suited to quiet background listening.
This is a music-oriented speaker rather than a direct substitute for a multi-speaker soundbar package. TechRadar also notes that it can form part of a Sonos surround setup.

5. Samsung Music Studio 7: a new option to verify
Samsung’s US announcement on April 6, 2026 describes the Music Studio 7 as a 3.1.1-channel speaker with wired or wireless Dolby Atmos. That is manufacturer information, not independent listening evidence. The announcement alone does not establish current retail availability, so treat the Music Studio 7 as a newly announced option rather than a proven pick or a like-for-like winner against independently reviewed systems.

What “wireless” means in an audio system
The word can refer to different connections, and one does not imply the others. Wi-Fi streaming, Bluetooth playback, a wireless subwoofer link, and battery-powered detachable surrounds solve different problems. Confirm the specific feature you need in the exact model’s specifications. For example, JBL describes detachable, battery-powered satellites on selected systems; Bose’s US catalog lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Chromecast, AirPlay 2, and Spotify Connect for selected products. JBL’s catalog and Bose’s US catalog are useful for checking listed connection options.

Checks to make before you buy
Match the system to the room and placement
A compact bar and a bar bundled with a subwoofer and rear satellites are not equivalent setups. Check where the bar, subwoofer, and any surrounds can go, and whether the room has space for the system you are considering. A standalone speaker such as the Era 300 is aimed at music and spatial audio, not at providing the same out-of-box surround arrangement as a full soundbar bundle.
Check TV and source-device connections
Confirm the TV’s available connections and whether your console, streamer, or other source will connect to the TV or pass through the soundbar. The Bar 1000MK2’s reported 4K/60Hz passthrough limit matters if a 4K/120Hz source must route through the bar. Check the exact model’s supported audio formats and your TV’s compatibility rather than relying on an Atmos label alone.
Consider the upgrade path and ecosystem
The Beam (Gen 2) is a compact starting point with an expansion option for a subwoofer and satellites. The Era 300 can be used as a standalone music speaker or as part of a compatible surround setup. Decide whether you want a self-contained system now or expect to add compatible components later.

Product suffixes, stock, warranty terms, and availability can vary by region. The cited recommendations are primarily US-facing, and the Music Studio 7 announcement is specifically for the US. Why independent rankings differ
There is no single universal winner because review guides weigh use cases differently. RTINGS ranks the HW-Q990F first in its 2026 guide, while Tom’s Guide names the Sonos Arc Ultra its best overall pick. Tom’s Guide describes evaluating setup, fit, connectivity, and sound quality; RTINGS separates categories such as best overall, mid-range, budget, compact, and large-room soundbars. Treat each ranking as that publisher’s judgment under its stated criteria, not as a consensus result. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 soundbar guide provides the alternative ranking.
