Start by checking for a firmware update in Sony’s smartphone app, then set the noise-control button for the places you use the headphones. Adjust EQ only if the default sound doesn’t suit you, and try automatic features such as Speak-to-Chat only if they fit your routine. This is a practical setup order, not a ranking published by Sony.
Open Sony’s app and check for an update
Sony’s current app is called Sony | Sound Connect; the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide still refers to it as Headphones Connect. The app is the main place to change noise control, ambient sound, EQ, and other headphone settings. Sony says there is no PC version of the app, although selected app configurations carry over when you use the headphones with a PC.

Connect the headphones to the app and check for an update notification. Sony recommends installing the latest headset software. Its US support page listed firmware version 2.5.1, released December 18, 2025, when checked; available versions can change. See Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support page for the current listing. The app can notify you when updated headset software is available.

Use noise canceling when reducing surrounding sound is your priority. Choose ambient sound when you want more of the environment to come through. Neither is the right choice for every place or activity.

The physical NC/AMB button switches between noise-control modes. In the app, you can configure which states it cycles through, including whether noise control is off. Set the sequence around the modes you actually use so the button is useful rather than a trip through unwanted options. Sony describes the function in its WH-1000XM5 noise-canceling guide.
Leave Auto NC Optimizer to do its job
Auto NC Optimizer is automatic, not a noise-canceling level you need to set. Sony says it optimizes performance according to wearing conditions and the environment, including changes in fit and pressure. As those conditions change, the perceived effect may fluctuate; that does not by itself mean you need to adjust a manual control. See Sony’s Auto NC Optimizer guide.

Change EQ only if the default sound isn’t right for you
The app’s equalizer lets you adjust frequency balance to suit your preference or content. Sony describes options for warmer or brighter sound and for emphasizing vocals, bass, or treble. There is no single best setting established for every listener.

Try automatic features only if they suit your habits
Speak-to-Chat
Speak-to-Chat is off by default. When enabled, it can pause or mute playback and capture a conversation when you speak. It may also trigger unintentionally—for example, when coughing, humming, brushing your teeth, or in response to environmental sounds. If you often need to talk without taking off your headphones, try it; if it interrupts listening, leave it off or adjust its sensitivity and timeout in the app. Sony’s Speak-to-Chat guide also explains that you can turn it on or off by holding two fingers on the touch sensor.
Adaptive Sound Control
Adaptive Sound Control can adjust noise canceling based on recognized behavior. It is an optional convenience, not a necessary first change: try it if automatic switching suits your routine, or keep control manual if you prefer to choose noise canceling and ambient sound yourself. A simple first-session order
- Install or open Sony | Sound Connect on your smartphone and connect the WH-1000XM5.
- Check the app for a headset software update and follow its update prompt if one is offered.
- Choose noise canceling or ambient sound for your usual setting, then configure the NC/AMB button’s switching pattern in the app.
- Leave Auto NC Optimizer automatic; it adapts to fit and environmental changes.
- Keep EQ at its default unless you want to tune the sound, then compare small adjustments with the default.
- Try Speak-to-Chat or Adaptive Sound Control only if their automatic behavior is useful to you.
Sony notes that available app functions can vary by model and that app specifications and screen design may change. Settings and labels may therefore differ from older instructions.
