Bring a light source and a weapon, and leave valuable items somewhere safe before a risky trip. How to handle powder snow
Do not assume a pale, snowy surface is solid. Powder snow can resemble a walkable surface, but a player may fall into it, move slowly while inside, and begin freezing and taking damage. - Approach uncertain snow-covered ground cautiously rather than running across it.

Watch for hostile mobs and keep your bearings
Strays are among the threats Mojang calls out for cold-biome exploration, so keep a weapon ready and avoid moving blindly into an unlit area. Lighting the route and marking it consistently can make it easier to retrace your way out if a passage branches or visibility is poor.
