The WH-1000XM5 is the sensible alternative if it costs meaningfully less, while Sony’s catalog also lists the bass-positioned ULT WEAR and the lower-cost WH-CH720N. The official specifications establish useful differences between the XM6 and XM5, but they do not prove which model sounds better, cancels more noise in real use, or feels more comfortable.
Which Sony over-ear headphones are worth considering?
Sony’s U.S. catalog, accessed October 7, 2026, lists several over-ear families. These are the clearest starting points, not definitive awards based on comparative testing:

| Model | Best starting point for | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| WH-1000XM6 | A premium feature set and Sony’s current flagship in this shortlist | Sony’s specifications list Bluetooth 5.3, four supported codecs, multipoint, ambient sound, a detachable cable, passive operation, and up to 30 hours of playback with noise canceling on. Sony specifications |
| WH-1000XM5 | A previous-generation option, especially if its current price is lower | Sony lists Bluetooth 5.2, SBC/AAC/LDAC, multipoint, ambient sound, and the same maximum battery figures as the XM6. Sony specifications |
| ULT WEAR | A candidate to investigate if you want Sony’s ULT POWER SOUND line | Sony’s catalog identifies it as part of that series; the evidence here does not establish comparative sound, noise cancellation, comfort, or call performance. Sony U.S. headphone catalog |
| WH-CH720N | A lower-cost candidate to compare against the premium models | Sony lists it among its over-ear products, but the available evidence does not support detailed comparative claims. Check its current specifications and price before deciding. Sony U.S. headphone catalog |
What distinguishes the WH-1000XM6?
Sony’s support specifications give the WH-1000XM6 an approximate weight of 8.96 oz and list Bluetooth 5.3, SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 codec support. They also list multipoint connection, ambient sound, a detachable cable, and passive operation. The box contents include a carrying case, connection cable, and USB cable. Noise cancellation and microphones
Sony describes the XM6 as using its HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 and an adaptive 12-microphone system. The product FAQ says the system adapts to external noise, air pressure, and wearing style. Sony also says the QN3 is seven times faster than the QN1 in the XM5, and associates that processing with noise cancellation, sound quality, and call clarity. That is Sony’s product claim; no independent comparative measurement is available here to establish a real-world improvement over the XM5. Sony WH-1000XM6 product FAQ

Battery life
Sony rates the XM6 for up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling on, or up to 40 hours with it off, and notes quick-charging support. These are maximum manufacturer figures; actual playback time varies with settings and use. Sony WH-1000XM6 specifications
When does the WH-1000XM5 make more sense?
The XM5 is worth considering when a fresh price check shows a substantial saving over the XM6. Sony lists its approximate weight as 8.82 oz, Bluetooth 5.2, SBC/AAC/LDAC support, multipoint, ambient sound, and atmospheric-pressure optimization. Its manufacturer-rated maximum playback is also up to 30 hours with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off. These figures do not establish that the two models perform identically in everyday use. Sony WH-1000XM5 specifications
Rank #2
- SONY’S LIGHTEST WIRELESS NOISE CANCELING HEADBAND EVER: Weighing just 192g, our lightest overhead wireless headphones with Noise Canceling yet, for incredible comfort without compromising on technology.
- DUAL NOISE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY: Take noise canceling to the next level with Sony’s Integrated Processor V1, so you can fully immerse yourself in the music.
- ALL DAY COMFORT: Super comfortable and lightweight design.
- SMART FEATURES: Adjustable Ambient Sound mode and Adaptive Sound control features tailors sound to suit the environment around you.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 35-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for up to 1 hour of playback).(USB Type-C Cable included)
Codec support is not a stand-alone sound-quality verdict: playback also depends on the source device, connection, and audio content. The XM6’s LC3 listing and newer Bluetooth version may matter to buyers checking compatibility, but the specifications alone do not demonstrate an audible advantage.
How should you choose between them?
- Set your budget using live prices. Sony’s catalog showed offers for the XM6, XM5, and ULT WEAR when accessed on October 7, 2026, but those prices can change. Sony’s XM6 FAQ separately lists an MSRP of $459.99 and warns offers may no longer apply. Neither figure should be treated as a guaranteed current checkout price. - Decide whether wired use matters. Sony lists a detachable cable and passive operation for the XM6. Confirm how you intend to use the cable and which functions remain available in that setup; the specification listing alone does not describe every wired-use behavior.
- Check the features you will actually use. Both XM models list multipoint and ambient sound. If you need a particular codec, verify that your phone or computer supports it as well.
- Do not choose by an unverified comfort or call-quality ranking. The available official specifications do not establish a cross-model comfort, microphone, or measured noise-canceling winner. If those are decisive, seek independent tests that compare the exact models under comparable conditions or try the headphones with your own devices.
- Compare the alternatives on current evidence. ULT WEAR and WH-CH720N are catalog candidates, but detailed comparisons are not established here. Check their current specifications, price, and return terms before treating either as a better fit.
What the specifications cannot tell you
Sony’s catalog and support pages document lineup and manufacturer-described features. They do not substitute for independent head-to-head measurements or listening tests. In particular, the available evidence does not establish whether one of these models has the best real-world ANC, sound, call quality, comfort, or case portability. Consider those questions unresolved rather than inferring a winner from processor speed, codec lists, or battery ratings.
