Sony’s FX5, FX2, FX3, FX30 and FX6 each suit a different combination of sensor format, production style and recording workflow. Sony lists all five in its US Cinema Line catalog, but does not rank them; this guide compares their documented differences so you can shortlist the body that fits your work. Features and prices below reflect Sony’s US listings and pages accessed October 7, 2026, and may change.
At a glance: five Sony Cinema Line cameras
| Model | Sensor format | Best starting point | Sony US catalog price observed October 7, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| FX5 | Full-frame | Production work that calls for its stacked sensor, Open Gate recording and newer processing features | $5,499.99; listed configuration includes the XLR handle |
| FX2 | Full-frame | A full-frame Cinema Line body offered with an XLR handle | $2,899.99 |
| FX3 | Full-frame | Mobile productions and solo shooting | $3,999.99 |
| FX30 | APS-C / Super 35 | Workflows that suit a smaller sensor format and supported 4K 120p recording modes | $2,099.99 |
| FX6 | Full-frame | A compact camera body for production workflows | $7,299.99 body; $8,699.99 lens kit |
These are the prices displayed in Sony’s US store on the date above, not guaranteed current prices or street prices. The FX6 body and lens kit are different purchase configurations; check the live listing for what is included. Sony’s catalog also lists other Cinema Line products, so this is a use-case shortlist, not a complete range or official ranking. Sony’s Cinema Line catalog

How to choose between the five
1. Choose by sensor format and lens field of view
The FX30 uses an APS-C-type sensor measuring 23.3 × 15.5 mm. The FX5, FX2, FX3 and FX6 are full-frame models. Sensor format affects how a lens frames a scene and can influence depth-of-field choices, but it does not make one camera automatically better. Consider your existing lenses, preferred framing, shooting conditions and budget before treating full-frame as an upgrade. Sony identifies the FX30’s sensor in its specifications; check each camera’s own mount and lens compatibility before buying.

Sony positions the FX3 for mobility and solo work. The FX6 is described as a compact body with a highly sensitive full-frame sensor and is offered in body and lens-kit configurations. The FX5’s listed features make it an option to examine for productions seeking its newer processing and recording capabilities. These descriptions indicate different tools, not a universal ranking: the available official material does not establish a controlled performance winner among them.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Check the exact recording mode, not just the headline frame rate
Supported frame rates depend on the selected codec and recording mode. Sony lists 4K 120p modes for the FX30, but that does not mean every codec supports every maximum rate. The FX5’s 5K (3:2) X-OCN at 120 fps and 4K at 240p are planned for firmware “August 2027 or later,” according to Sony—not capabilities to count on today. Confirm the camera’s current specifications and firmware status against the specific format you plan to record. FX30 product page · FX5 product page
4. Budget for media, audio and lenses as a system
The purchase price of the body is only one part of a workable camera package. Check recording-media requirements for your chosen modes: Sony notes that some FX5 X-OCN recording requires CFexpress Type A media, and the FX3 accepts CFexpress Type A or SD media in its two card slots. Verify the exact card type and mode before purchasing media. Also confirm whether the selected bundle includes the handle you need: the FX3’s XLR handle provides two XLR/TRS inputs, and the FX30’s XLR handle also provides two XLR/TRS inputs. Sony’s FX5 listing includes an XLR handle in the selected bundle, so confirm the package rather than assuming every configuration is identical. FX3 specifications · FX30 specifications

What stands out on each model
Sony FX5: full-frame features with future firmware plans to verify
Sony identifies the FX5 as having a 5K full-frame fully stacked Exmor RS sensor, a BIONZ XR2 processor with integrated AI processing, and Open Gate recording. The listed bundle includes an XLR handle. Some X-OCN recording requires CFexpress Type A media, and Sony says the camera is not guaranteed to be 100% dust- and moisture-proof. Its planned 5K and 4K high-frame-rate modes are future firmware features, so weigh the camera on capabilities available for your work now rather than treating those plans as delivered specifications. Sony’s catalog includes the FX2 as a full-frame Cinema Line camera, and its product page identifies an XLR handle bundle. Sony FX3: a mobile full-frame setup for solo work
Sony positions the FX3 for mobility and solo shooting. Its official specifications list 15+ stops of latitude in S-Log3 and two media slots that accept CFexpress Type A or SD cards. The XLR handle offers two XLR/TRS inputs. Recording options vary by codec and frame rate, so use Sony’s mode-by-mode specifications to verify the combination you need rather than assuming all listed formats share the same maximum rate. Sony FX30: APS-C / Super 35 with supported 4K 120p modes
The FX30 is the APS-C option in this group, with a 23.3 × 15.5 mm sensor. Sony lists 14+ stops of latitude in S-Log3 and 4K 120p recording modes; its XLR handle has two XLR/TRS inputs. That sensor format may work well with your lens collection and depth-of-field preferences, but compare the field of view you get with your lenses instead of treating sensor size as a simple quality score. Sony FX6: full-frame body or lens kit
Sony describes the FX6 as a compact camera body with a highly sensitive full-frame sensor. Its US catalog lists a body and a lens-kit option, so make sure you compare the configuration you intend to buy rather than treating the kit price as a body-only price. The available official material does not provide controlled head-to-head test results against the FX3 or FX5; consider the FX6 as a different production tool, not an automatic upgrade. Sony FX6

Use this checklist before you buy
- Write down your recording requirement. Name the resolution, frame rate and codec you need, then confirm Sony supports that exact combination on the specific body.
- Check the sensor and lenses together. Decide whether full-frame or APS-C/Super 35 framing better suits your lenses and visual preferences; verify compatibility with the camera and any adapters you intend to use.
- Price the complete workflow. Add compatible media for your chosen formats, audio equipment, lenses and any handle or other bundle components not included in the listing.
- Compare like with like. Match body-only against body-only, or compare complete kits by their included contents. Recheck Sony’s US listing because catalog prices, stock and bundles can change.
- Separate shipping features from announced plans. For the FX5, treat the cited August 2027-or-later firmware capabilities as planned until Sony confirms their release and availability.
Sony describes the Cinema Line look as designed for film-like video expression and skin tones. That is Sony’s product positioning, not an independent comparative test; your results depend on the camera settings, lenses, lighting and post-production workflow you use. Sony Cinema Line overview
