Which Raspberry Pi Projects Are Worth Keeping? Five Retirements and the Reasons Behind Them

A truthful way to assess Raspberry Pi projects you may retire, with model-specific storage and power considerations and a Pi-hole example.

I can’t truthfully name five Raspberry Pi projects I personally stopped using: the available evidence does not establish which projects they were, how they performed, or why they were retired. Rather than inventing a first-person account, this guide gives you a practical way to judge your own Pi projects—and explains the hardware constraints that can make some setups harder to keep running.

How to tell whether a Raspberry Pi project is still worth keeping

A project is a candidate for retirement when it no longer solves a recurring problem, takes more attention than its value warrants, or has become redundant. Before deciding, record the project’s actual role and the experience of maintaining it; generic drawbacks are not proof that they applied to your setup.

  • Use: When did you last rely on it, and what would you miss if it were turned off?
  • Upkeep: What updates, troubleshooting, or manual intervention does it require?
  • Reliability: Does it work dependably enough for the task it serves?
  • Hardware: Are its storage and power needs manageable for the Pi model and peripherals you use?
  • Replacement: Does another device or service already do the job?

For each project, write down what it did, the Pi model and major peripherals, what worked, the recurring burden, how often you used it, what replaced it (if anything), and the specific reason you stopped. That record makes it possible to distinguish “I no longer need this” from “this needs a better setup.”

Check storage and power before blaming the project

Raspberry Pi requirements vary by model, operating system, and attached devices. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance says a Pi needs non-volatile boot media containing an operating system. It recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS desktop and Full editions, and 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite; other operating systems have their own requirements. On supported newer hardware, boot media can also include USB mass storage, network boot, or NVMe through PCIe.

Power is similarly model- and workload-dependent. The setup guide recommends 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 500. Raspberry Pi 5’s 3 A supply mode limits available peripheral current. For a Pi 5 driving higher-power devices such as hard drives or SSDs, Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation recommends a 5 A USB-PD-capable supply to support those peripherals with workload margin.

These specifications identify possible sources of friction, not a diagnosis of any particular project. If a setup is unstable or constrained, check its actual storage and power arrangement before concluding that the project itself was a bad fit.

Example: decide whether a Pi-hole setup still earns its place

Pi-hole is a DNS sinkhole intended to block unwanted content across devices without installing client-side software. Its official documentation says it can block content beyond browsers, including in mobile apps and smart TVs; it also caches DNS queries and can optionally act as a DHCP server. The developers describe its hardware requirements as lightweight, and Pi-hole is not limited to Raspberry Pi devices.

Those capabilities explain what the project can do, not whether a particular person found it useful or why they stopped running it. For your own setup, note whether it served devices you cared about, what upkeep it required, and whether another DNS or network arrangement made it unnecessary. Do not treat a general feature or limitation as a personal reason unless it matches your experience.

Choose what to do with a retired Pi

Once a service is no longer useful, decide whether to remove it, keep the Pi available, or repurpose the hardware for a need you actually have. Start with the task rather than the list of projects: a Pi is worth keeping in service when it does something you use and its maintenance, storage, and power demands remain reasonable for your setup.

For inspiration, the Raspberry Pi Foundation maintains a project collection for coding and making. Treat ideas as options to evaluate, not obligations: a project does not become worthwhile simply because it is possible to build.
