Apple Home works with supported HomeKit accessories and Matter devices in the categories Apple lists—but Matter support does not guarantee that every feature of every product will appear in the Home app. Apple’s official materials reviewed for this guide do not identify a released smart-home platform called homeOS. For a buying decision, check the exact model, its Apple Home or HomeKit claim, its Matter category, and the features you need.
What “homeOS,” HomeKit and Matter mean
Apple Home and HomeKit
Apple Home is the app and ecosystem for controlling and automating compatible accessories. HomeKit is Apple’s framework for supported accessories and apps. A product explicitly described as Apple Home or HomeKit compatible is a useful starting point, but check its documentation for the exact functions supported. Apple’s developer overview describes HomeKit and Matter support.

Matter
Matter is a cross-platform smart-home standard. Apple says Matter accessories can be paired through the Home app or a HomeKit-based app. A Matter label alone does not mean every product category or manufacturer-specific feature is available in Apple Home; use Apple’s Matter category list and the product’s model-specific documentation.

Thread is a low-power IP mesh networking technology, not another name for Matter. Some accessories use Thread; Matter devices may use other networks. Apple explains that Thread devices can forward packets through the mesh, helping provide coverage and redundancy. Thread products have additional network requirements, described below. What to check before buying or pairing a device
1. Confirm the model, category and feature
Look up the precise model number and region, not just the product family. Confirm that the manufacturer explicitly supports Apple Home or HomeKit, or that the Matter product’s category appears on Apple’s list. Then verify the specific feature you care about: compatibility with a category does not establish that every feature will be exposed in the Home app.

- 【Matter: All-Round Compatibility】With Matter, users are no longer tied to specific platforms and works with all certified smart home platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. You can control all your smart home devices from a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps for different devices.
- 【Matter: Smooth LAN Control】All Matter-certified devices in your local area network (LAN) will work smoothly even when your home internet goes offline. Matter allows effective communication directly between devices, without the need for a specific 'forwarding' device. For example, a Matter smart switch or sensor can turn on/off a Matter bulb directly without being connected to a cloud service, or other specific action. Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
- 【Matter: Future-Proofing】Matter devices will be compatible with future updates and advancements in technology, ensuring that your smart home system remains up-to-date and compatible with new devices and features.
- 【Compact & Flame Retardant Design】Avoid blocking additional outlets with its compact design, and plug in your WiFi smart plug with confidence thanks to its UL certified flame retardant design and 2-year limited warranty.
- 【App & Voice Control】Control your WiFi smart plug from anywhere, anytime via the free Tapo App or just give voice commands to Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Samsung SmartThings. Your favorite smart assistant enables you to have a truly hands-free experience.
2. Check whether you need a home hub
Apple’s Works with Apple Home badge guidance says a home hub such as HomePod or Apple TV is required for automations, notifications and remote access for non-Thread Matter accessories. Apple also says the latest Home architecture requires a hub for sharing control and receiving Home notifications. Requirements depend on what you want to do, so distinguish basic setup or local control from remote access, notifications and automation. Apple badge guidance; Apple Home architecture update
3. Check Thread support separately
A Thread accessory needs a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub, according to Apple’s setup guidance. Apple names Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini as examples, and also mentions a compatible third-party Thread border router. Do not assume every Apple TV generation or configuration supports Thread; verify the exact hub and accessory. Apple setup guide

4. Pair with the right code
Apple’s setup instructions describe scanning the accessory’s QR code or entering its Apple Home or Matter setup code. If you first paired a Matter device in the manufacturer’s app, that app may provide the code needed to add it to Apple Home. Follow the instructions for the specific product. Apple setup guide

6. Treat badges as a starting point
Apple’s Works with Apple Home badge rules apply to Matter-certified accessories and specify compatibility statements. A badge or category name does not replace checking the manufacturer’s current documentation for model-specific features, firmware, bridge requirements and regional availability. Apple badge guidance
