Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with a regular HTTP request, not a browser. Inspect the response for the content, embedded data, or a request that supplies it; extract that directly when practical. Use a headless browser only when scripts or browser interaction are genuinely needed. Then wait for a signal tied to the content you need, check the HTTP status, extract the main content, and convert it to Markdown as separate pipeline stages.
Can you collect the content without rendering the page?
A JavaScript-heavy site does not automatically require a browser. Fetch the URL as ordinary HTTP and inspect its HTML, script elements, and embedded structured data. If the desired information is already there, parse the response directly. If the page requests the data separately, inspect that request and consider reproducing it; do not guess an endpoint from the site’s framework or appearance.

Scrapy’s dynamic-content documentation favors reproducing the requests that carry the desired data when feasible. That approach can yield structured, complete data with less parsing time and network transfer than running a browser. It is not always practical: a request may be difficult to reproduce, or the content may depend on browser behavior.
When should you use a headless browser?
Use a browser when the content appears only after JavaScript executes, when the page’s state depends on interaction, or when you need the rendered view. A browser such as Playwright can execute the page scripts and make the resulting HTML available for extraction. Keep this distinct from the later work of identifying the page’s main content and converting it to Markdown.

If your crawler already uses Scrapy, account for integration costs: Scrapy notes that using Playwright directly bypasses much of its middleware and duplicate-filtering machinery, and recommends scrapy-playwright for closer integration. This is a consideration for existing Scrapy projects, not a reason every pipeline needs Scrapy.
How do you know the content is ready?
“The page loaded” does not necessarily mean “the content I need is present.” Prefer a content-specific readiness condition, such as the appearance of the article container or a site-specific state marker, and put a firm timeout around the wait. If the signal never appears, classify the result as a timeout or incomplete render rather than quietly converting an empty shell.

Playwright exposes the navigation states commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle. Its documentation discourages treating networkidle as a readiness proxy: the API defines it as at least 500 ms with no network connections, but that threshold does not establish that the page’s content is complete. Playwright says, “Don’t use this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.” The statement concerns the networkidle state. For a known content selector, Cloudflare’s rendered HTML endpoint documentation describes waitForSelector as an alternative to waiting for all network activity.
How should the pipeline handle status errors and failures?
Record the requested URL, final URL, navigation status when available, readiness outcome, and extraction result. In Playwright, page.goto() can throw for an invalid URL, a navigation timeout, an unreachable server, or a main-resource load failure. But a valid HTTP error status such as 404 or 500 does not by itself make navigation throw. Inspect the returned response status so an error page is not mistaken for successfully collected content.

- HTTP error response: record the status and handle the page according to your pipeline’s policy rather than treating navigation completion as success.
- Navigation exception or timeout: record the failure and avoid converting missing content as if it were a valid page.
- Readiness timeout: mark the render as incomplete or timed out; do not silently emit empty Markdown.
- Extraction failure or partial content: preserve the failure state so downstream consumers can distinguish it from a successful, possibly short article.
How do you turn rendered HTML into useful Markdown?
Keep rendering, content extraction, and Markdown conversion as distinct steps. After rendering, select the page’s main content rather than converting the entire browser page. Depending on the target, exclude navigation, cookie banners, and unrelated interface elements. Preserve the semantic structure downstream readers need: headings, lists, links, tables, and code.
Cloudflare’s Browser Run /content endpoint is one managed example: it returns rendered HTML, including the head section, after JavaScript execution for parsing and downstream processing. Its documentation describes REST API and Worker binding access. The cited documentation does not establish a universal extraction heuristic or a preferred HTML-to-Markdown library, so selectors and converter choices should be treated as implementation decisions and checked against each target site’s structure.
Which approach fits your pipeline?
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Direct HTML or data-request extraction | The initial response contains the content, or you can reliably reproduce the request that supplies it. | Requires inspecting the actual response or request; do not infer an endpoint without confirming it carries the needed data. |
| Headless browser | Scripts or browser interaction are required to obtain the relevant content or state. | Runs more page machinery than parsing a direct response. The cited sources provide no quantitative speed or cost comparison. |
| Managed rendering service | You prefer a hosted browser-rendering option over operating browser workers yourself. | Introduces a service dependency; it is optional, not required for the pipeline. |
Choose based on where the content actually lives, the fidelity you need, and whether your team can operate browser workers. Also consider whether you need content loaded after initial navigation and whether your pipeline can enforce readiness, timeouts, status checks, and explicit incomplete-result handling.

What should you consider with managed rendering?
Cloudflare’s Browser Run /content endpoint is a documented hosted option for obtaining rendered HTML. The documentation warns that JavaScript-heavy pages and single-page applications may produce empty or incomplete results under default page-load behavior, and describes waitForSelector for cases where the desired content has a known selector. It also says that configuring a user agent does not bypass bot protection.
If you expose rendering through your own Worker or proxy, restrict destinations. Cloudflare’s prerendering tutorial demonstrates validating HTTP(S) URLs and limiting target hostnames with an allowlist. That is a useful design pattern to prevent arbitrary URL rendering, not a universal security audit or proof that every deployment is safe.
