Apple Home works with accessories that explicitly support Apple Home (formerly HomeKit) or a compatible Matter category. Apple lists Matter air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, plugs, switches, thermostats, blinds and roller shades, plus motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature and humidity sensors. Matter accessories need an Apple home hub to add them to the Home app, and Thread-enabled Matter accessories also need Thread-capable infrastructure. Compatibility depends on the exact model, connection type and supported functions—not just the product category.
What “works with Apple Home Hub” means
An Apple home hub is the home’s Apple device that supports features such as remote access and automations. It is not a guarantee that every smart accessory will work. The accessory itself must support Apple Home or a Matter category Apple Home supports, and its required connection and functions must be compatible. Apple’s home hub setup guide explains hub requirements, while its Matter support information lists supported accessory categories.

Which Matter accessory categories Apple Home supports
Apple’s current Matter category list includes:
- Air conditioners
- Bridges
- Lights
- Locks
- Plugs
- Switches
- Thermostats
- Blinds and roller shades
- Motion sensors
- Ambient-light sensors
- Contact sensors
- Temperature sensors
- Humidity sensors
This list describes supported categories, not every product in those categories. A smart plug, for example, is not automatically compatible just because it is a plug: verify that the exact model supports Apple Home or Matter and that Apple Home supports the functions you want to use.

How Matter, Thread and a home hub differ
Matter is an accessory interoperability standard
Matter support can let compatible accessories work across supported smart-home platforms. For Apple Home, check that the accessory’s Matter category is one Apple lists and follow the manufacturer’s pairing instructions.

Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.

Thread is a networking technology
Some Matter accessories connect over Thread. Those accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub or a supported third-party Thread border router; a hub that lacks Thread capability does not meet that requirement. Apple identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled home hub examples. Apple’s exact requirement is: “Thread-enabled Matter accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub, such as HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet or a supported third-party border router.”
Not every Apple home hub supports Thread
Apple says HomePod mini and HomePod become hubs when set up, while Apple TV becomes a hub when added to a room in the Home app. That does not mean every HomePod or Apple TV model is Thread-capable. Check the specific hub model if you plan to use Thread accessories.

Check these details before buying
- Exact model: Look for explicit Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter support on the product listing and in the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
- Matter category: If relying on Matter, confirm that the accessory’s category appears on Apple’s supported list.
- Connection type: Check whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread. Thread requires the appropriate hub or border router.
- Bridge requirements: Some accessories depend on a bridge. Confirm whether one is required and whether it is included or sold separately.
- Functions in Apple Home: Confirm that the controls or readings you need are available in Apple Home; category compatibility alone does not establish every feature.
- Setup conditions: Check the manufacturer’s pairing steps, region restrictions and software requirements.
Add an accessory in the Home app
- Power on the accessory and connect it as directed by its manufacturer.
- Open the Home app and choose the option to add an accessory.
- Scan the accessory’s setup QR code or enter its setup code when prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the Matter accessory was already paired with another app, choose More Options when it appears. If prompted, get the pairing code from the accessory’s app and continue setup.
Apple’s iPhone accessory setup guide describes the Add Accessory flow and how to add a Matter accessory previously paired with another app. If setup fails, recheck the accessory’s exact model, connection requirements and manufacturer instructions.
