For the shortest all-in-one setup, the Yamaha SR-C20A is the clearest specification-based fit: it is 23-5/8 inches wide and has a built-in subwoofer. If your TV has an optical output but you specifically want a Sonos bar, the Sonos Ray is an option—but its setup uses optical, not HDMI ARC. Polk’s Signa S2 is the choice here with a separate wireless subwoofer, so it needs more room than the bar alone. Measure the space and check your TV’s audio outputs before choosing.
How to choose a small soundbar for your TV
“Small” is not a standard soundbar size. Measure the available width, height, and depth, then check where the TV’s infrared receiver sits and whether the bar could cover the screen edge. A bar that fits on a shelf may still interfere with the TV or its remote.

Next, check the TV’s audio outputs. HDMI ARC can provide a one-cable connection and TV-remote control when both the television and soundbar support the relevant features. For optical-only installations, choose a model documented for optical and confirm the TV’s audio-output settings. The soundbar’s connection options do not guarantee that every TV will behave identically.
- Space: Compare the bar’s width, height, and depth against the actual installation area.
- Connection: Match the soundbar input to an available TV output, such as HDMI ARC or optical.
- Bass: Decide whether you can accommodate a separate subwoofer or prefer bass built into the bar.
- Dialogue: Treat named dialogue features as processing options, not promises that speech will be clear in every room or for every listener.

What the specifications mean in practice
Yamaha SR-C20A: prioritize width and a single-unit footprint
Yamaha lists HDMI ARC, digital optical, and auxiliary connections alongside a built-in subwoofer and Clear Voice. That combination makes the SR-C20A a practical shortlist match when you want a relatively short bar and do not want to find a separate subwoofer location. Yamaha describes its connections as “Simple setup with HDMI®, optical or aux connections.” That is the manufacturer’s product-page wording, not an independent assessment of setup difficulty. See Yamaha’s dimensions and connections.
Bose TV Speaker (2nd Gen): check generation and depth
Bose lists the second-generation TV Speaker at 23.465 inches wide, but its published depth is 4.154 inches. Confirm both clearance and the exact generation: Bose also lists a first-generation TV Speaker, so do not assume product details carry over between versions. The second-generation product page describes HDMI or optical audio connection and Dialogue Mode. Check the Bose TV Speaker (2nd Gen) specifications.

Sonos Ray: choose it only if optical suits the TV hookup
Sonos’s setup instructions specify connecting Ray to the TV’s optical port. That makes the connection requirement especially important: do not select it on the assumption that it connects by HDMI ARC. Sonos also offers Speech Enhancement. The cited product information does not establish that Ray sounds better than the other options. Review Sonos Ray’s product and setup details.
Polk Signa S2: account for the subwoofer, not just the bar
Polk describes Signa S2 as a low-profile universal TV bar and lists a wireless subwoofer, HDMI ARC, VoiceAdjust, and Night Mode. The subwoofer is a separate piece of equipment: make sure there is a sensible place for it that does not obstruct a walkway. Polk publishes a total frequency response of 45 Hz–20,000 Hz; that is a manufacturer specification, not a third-party measurement in the cited material. See Polk’s Signa S2 features.

Check the connection and room before buying
- Measure the installation area. Record usable width, height, and depth below or in front of the TV. Include clearance for cables and controls, and check that the soundbar will not block the TV’s infrared receiver.
- Inspect the TV’s audio outputs. Look for an HDMI port labeled ARC or an optical audio output. Match that output to the soundbar’s documented inputs; for HDMI ARC and TV-remote control behavior, compatible equipment is required.
- Plan subwoofer placement. If the model includes a separate unit, measure a location for it and ensure its cable or power arrangement works for the room. If there is no space, an all-in-one design such as the Yamaha SR-C20A avoids a separate subwoofer footprint.
- Set the TV’s audio output. After connection, check the TV’s sound or audio settings and select the appropriate external audio output if needed. Menu names vary by television.
- Try the dialogue control with your own content. Compare speech with the feature on and off at a comfortable volume. Room acoustics, the program mix, and listener needs affect whether a processing mode helps.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
The documented specifications help narrow choices by fit, connection, bass arrangement, and named dialogue features. They do not provide a controlled, independent sound-quality comparison among these four models. The cited sources also do not establish comparative output level, Dolby Atmos support across the shortlist, or a universal surround-performance ranking. If any of those are decisive, check the exact model’s current specification and consult independent testing that evaluates the specific claim.
