Start by identifying the exact mod, version, Skyrim edition and every city, interior, NPC and navigation plugin in your list. AI Overhaul’s full and Lite editions use different techniques; Immersive Citizens depends heavily on layout compatibility and documented ordering exceptions. Do not copy AI Overhaul’s listed game-setting values as universal tweaks, and do not change Immersive Citizens’ sandbox-cylinder defaults casually.
What “smoothly” means for Skyrim NPC AI mods
A load order can be technically valid yet still produce poor NPC behavior. Characters may stand idle, fail to reach schedules, walk into furniture, disappear from an interior or load late. Those are usually compatibility or navigation problems, not graphics settings. Frame rate is a separate question: scripts, packages and extra markers can affect CPU work, but the supplied mod documentation does not establish a universal frame-rate target.

Use this order of priorities:
- Confirm the exact Skyrim edition and mod versions.
- Choose the AI mod scope that fits your list.
- Check physical layout, furniture-marker and navigation-mesh conflicts.
- Apply only patches that name your exact installed mods and versions.
- Use documented load-order exceptions rather than a “put it last” rule.
- Treat performance claims as author estimates unless independent testing is available.
Identify the edition, versions and actual plugins first
Before changing a single position, record whether you are running Skyrim Special Edition, an Anniversary-era installation or another supported edition, then note the exact release of each AI mod and patch. A guide for one edition or version can be wrong for another because records, masters and compatibility patches differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExport or write down the complete plugin list, including city overhauls, interior edits, NPC replacers, follower frameworks, lighting or furniture changes, navigation-mesh edits and patches. “I use an AI mod” is not enough information to diagnose a collision: the conflicting plugin may be a town overhaul that moves an entrance, deletes a marker or rebuilds a navmesh.

AI Overhaul main versus AI Overhaul Lite
AI Overhaul’s two editions are not interchangeable descriptions of the same implementation. The full version edits NPC AI data and packages and adds idle markers. Lite avoids direct NPC edits and extra markers, instead applying behavior through an AI quest. The author describes Lite as more compatible, but that is not a guarantee for every load order.
| Choice | How it changes the game | Compatibility implication | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Overhaul main | Direct NPC AI-data and package edits, plus additional idle markers. | More records and world objects can overlap with NPC replacers, city edits and interior changes. | When you want the broader behavior changes and can verify patches for the rest of your list. |
| AI Overhaul Lite | No direct NPC edits and no extra markers; behavior is delivered through an AI quest. | The author presents it as more compatible, although conflicts remain possible with other quests and overhauls. | When your list contains many NPC or layout edits and you prefer a lighter behavior layer. |
Do not judge the editions only by the number of features. Compare the records they touch with the records touched by your NPC replacers, city overhauls and interior plugins. A smaller implementation can be the smoother option when an exact patch for the full version does not exist, while the full version may be preferable when its supported patches cover your list.

AI Overhaul’s listed settings: values to recognize, not copy blindly
The AI Overhaul SSE page lists these changes for version 1.9 and later:
| Game setting | Value listed by the mod | What the listing means |
|---|---|---|
fAIInDialogueModeWithPlayerDistance |
240 | A value the mod changes as part of its configuration. |
fAIDialogueDistance |
120 | A value the mod changes; it is not presented as a universal user tweak. |
fAIBestHeadTrackDistance |
400 | A value listed among the mod’s changes. |
fAIMaxHeadTrackDistance |
200 | A value listed among the mod’s changes. |
iAINumberActorsComplexScene |
30 | A setting value, not a measured frame-rate benchmark. |
These numbers describe what the mod page says it changes. They are not instructions to enter the same values globally in an ini file or console. Stacking another “AI optimization” tweak on top can override the mod’s intended behavior or create an untested combination. If you already use a settings tweak, compare its changes with the list above and remove or disable overlapping edits while troubleshooting.
Changing these values also will not repair a broken navmesh or a missing furniture marker. If an NPC walks into a wall, cannot reach a bed or remains frozen in a town, investigate records and worldspace edits before altering dialogue or head-tracking distances.

Immersive Citizens: compatibility is about the world it sees
Immersive Citizens’ documentation identifies changed town and interior layouts, moved or removed idle and furniture markers, and navigation-mesh edits as major conflict mechanisms. Its packages can be perfectly valid yet fail when the physical world no longer matches the locations and paths those packages expect.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why layout edits break schedules
- A city overhaul can move a door or building while an AI package still points to the original location.
- Removing an idle or furniture marker can leave a package with no usable destination.
- A rebuilt navmesh can disconnect an NPC’s route or send the character into an object.
- An interior redesign can place beds, workstations or sandbox destinations outside the area assumed by the AI mod.
Load order alone cannot repair a genuinely incompatible layout. If two plugins alter the same navmesh or move the same marker, you need a compatible patch, a documented alternative, or a decision to remove one of the conflicting edits.
Immersive Citizens load order: use exceptions, not a universal slot
The Immersive Citizens author suggests placing the plugin near the bottom, but the same instructions list plugins that must be above or below it. Compatibility patches can add their own constraints. Therefore there is no single “correct” position that applies to every list.

A safe ordering workflow
- Read the maintained compatibility and ordering instructions for your release. Search for every city, interior, NPC and patch plugin you actually use, not merely the major overhaul you remember installing.
- Record each explicit exception. If the instructions say a plugin must load above Immersive Citizens, keep that relationship even when a generic rule would place Immersive Citizens later. Do the same for plugins that must load below it.
- Check the patch’s own description. A patch is an additional plugin with its own masters and ordering requirements; it does not automatically inherit the position of either parent mod.
- Place the patch after the plugins it patches when its instructions require that order. Verify the exact names and versions before activating it.
- Sort, then inspect conflicts. Use your mod manager’s conflict view to confirm which records win, paying particular attention to navmeshes, markers, worldspaces and AI packages.
- Test in a controlled save. Visit one affected town and one interior, wait through a full in-game schedule change and watch for pathing, sandboxing and loading problems before continuing a long playthrough.
Example: a patch-specific relationship
One Bethesda listing gives this exact order for its patch: Immersive Citizens → MorrowLoot Ultimate → the compatibility patch. That is an example for that named patch, not a template for unrelated patches. If you do not have both parent mods and the matching versions, do not install or imitate the order.
Do not raise Immersive Citizens’ sandbox-cylinder defaults casually
The Immersive Citizens author specifically warns against plugins that alter the defaults for fSandboxCylinderTop and fSandboxCylinderBottom. According to the author, changing them can leave NPCs inactive for a long time or prevent the engine from loading some NPCs.
This warning matters when a troubleshooting guide recommends increasing sandbox ranges to make characters roam farther. A larger value is not a harmless performance tweak. If NPCs stop appearing, remain inactive or fail to load after a settings change, revert the plugin or ini edit that changed these defaults before diagnosing anything else.

Performance: what is known and what is not
The Immersive Citizens FAQ says: “No, no significant performances impact (around 1%).” That is the Immersive Citizens author’s estimate, accessed in 2026, not an independent benchmark with a published test method. It should not be treated as a promise for every hardware configuration, mod list, location or frame-rate target.
No independent measured frame-rate statistic is established here. In practice, your result depends on CPU headroom, script load, the number of NPCs active in a scene, city and interior overhauls, animation systems, lighting and the rest of the plugin stack. Measure before and after one change in the same location rather than assuming that a setting value or author estimate predicts your system.
A repeatable performance check
- Choose a repeatable route, such as entering the same busy city from the same save.
- Stand in the same area for several seconds, then walk the same short path.
- Record frame-time or frame-rate behavior before changing the load order.
- Change one plugin, patch or setting only.
- Repeat the route and compare stutter, script delay and NPC loading, not just the highest frame rate.
If behavior is wrong but frame rate is stable, focus on records, markers and navmeshes. If frame time worsens without pathing errors, investigate the broader script and visual stack rather than changing sandbox-cylinder settings.

How to choose among AI Overhaul, Lite and Immersive Citizens
| Decision question | What to check | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| How extensive should NPC changes be? | Full AI Overhaul edits NPC data and packages; Lite uses a quest without direct NPC edits or extra markers; Immersive Citizens changes schedules and sandbox behavior according to its own documentation. | Scope determines which records and world objects can conflict. |
| How many layout changes are in the list? | Count city, interior, marker and navmesh edits. | Immersive Citizens is especially sensitive to a worldspace that no longer matches its assumptions. |
| Are exact patches available? | Check the patch name, supported versions and required order. | A patch for a different release may not resolve your conflict. |
| Is compatibility the priority? | Consider Lite when its lighter implementation fits your desired features. | The author describes Lite as more compatible, but no option is guaranteed for every list. |
| What does the author require for your save and platform? | Read the exact release notes and installation instructions. | Edition and version differences can invalidate otherwise reasonable advice. |
A community question sometimes asks which is “better” between Immersive Citizens, AI Overhaul and combinations with dialogue or survival-safety mods. That wording does not establish a consensus answer. The practical choice is the implementation whose supported patches cover your exact list and whose scope matches the behavior you want.
Troubleshooting by symptom
NPCs stand still or remain inactive
- Revert any change to
fSandboxCylinderToporfSandboxCylinderBottom. - Check whether a city or interior edit removed the marker or destination the package needs.
- Verify that the installed patch matches every parent mod and version.
- Test on a controlled save after rebuilding the load order.
NPCs walk into walls, furniture or unreachable areas
- Inspect navmesh edits in the affected worldspace.
- Look for moved or deleted idle and furniture markers.
- Check whether a layout overhaul is listed as compatible with the AI mod.
- Do not expect a later plugin position to fix a physically incompatible mesh.
Some NPCs fail to load
- Undo sandbox-cylinder changes first.
- Check for missing masters and disabled dependencies.
- Confirm that the load order follows the author’s exceptions rather than a blanket “last” rule.
- Remove an unverified patch and retest with only documented combinations.
Behavior is acceptable but frame rate drops
- Measure the same route before and after one change.
- Check CPU-heavy scripts, dense city edits and visual overhauls alongside the AI plugins.
- Do not treat
iAINumberActorsComplexScene = 30as a guaranteed performance limit; it is a value listed by AI Overhaul, not a benchmark.
Final checklist before a long playthrough
- Skyrim edition and mod versions are written down.
- AI Overhaul main or Lite was chosen deliberately.
- AI Overhaul’s listed settings were not copied as unrelated global tweaks.
- Immersive Citizens’ compatibility instructions were checked for every affected plugin.
- No unverified plugin changes the sandbox-cylinder defaults.
- City, interior, marker and navmesh conflicts have a documented patch or a deliberate removal.
- Patch order matches the exact patch listing; the MorrowLoot example is not being generalized.
- Behavior and frame rate were tested separately in a repeatable location.
The most reliable “smooth” setup is not the one with the most aggressive AI settings. It is the one whose implementation, worldspace edits and patches agree with one another. Use Lite when its reduced record footprint fits your goals, use the full AI Overhaul or Immersive Citizens only after checking their specific compatibility rules, and treat every load-order instruction as version- and patch-dependent.
