Install one NPC-AI overhaul at a time, match its file to your Skyrim edition and runtime, use a mod manager, install only patches that match your actual loadout, and let LOOT sort as a starting point rather than a substitute for the mod author’s compatibility instructions. Back up your save and mod profile before changing anything; no universal guarantee makes installing, updating, or removing an AI overhaul mid-playthrough risk-free.
The two major approaches covered here are AI Overhaul SSE and Immersive Citizens. They change different records and have different compatibility rules, so the safer choice depends on which features you want and which city, NPC, appearance, dialogue, and settlement mods are already installed.

Choose the overhaul before you install anything
Do not download both overhauls first and decide later. Select one, then check its current files, requirements, readme, compatibility list, and available patches against your own plugin list. A similarly named patch is not automatically compatible with both projects.

There is no universally correct load order for every Skyrim installation. Your final order depends on the exact overhaul version, game runtime, settlement edits, NPC appearance plugins, dialogue or scene changes, and patches in your profile.

Check edition, runtime, and files first
Write down the game edition and runtime shown by your installation, then record the active plugin list and the save you intend to test. Include the selected mod’s version, required masters, optional dependencies, and every compatibility patch you plan to use. Keep this baseline outside the game so you can restore it if a change fails.
- Verify the release: the current AI Overhaul SSE listing was version 1.8.7 with a May 26, 2025 update, while its embedded readme identifies version 1.8.5 and is dated December 10, 2023. Treat the documentation included with the file you actually download as the authority for that file, and investigate any discrepancy rather than assuming the numbers describe the same release.
- Check Immersive Citizens carefully: its published installation material includes requirements for older Skyrim and downloadable-content combinations. Compare those instructions with the active files page and your installed edition; legacy references may not describe the current release.
- Confirm masters and optional files: a plugin that expects a master absent from your edition will not be fixed by changing load order. Do not enable optional modules or patches unless their requirements are present.
- Inventory conflicts: identify mods that edit the same NPC records, AI packages, idle markers, city or village cells, interiors, dialogue, scenes, or cell settings. These are the records most likely to require a dedicated patch.
Make a copy of the save and export or duplicate the mod-manager profile before installation. A separate profile is preferable because it preserves the original plugin order and enabled-file state, not just the save.
Install with a mod manager
Vortex is one Nexus Mods option for Skyrim Special Edition, and other established managers can perform the same basic job. The labels and folder layout can change between releases, so follow the manager’s current installer and the mod’s current readme instead of reproducing an old manual-install tutorial.

- Create or select a profile. Use a profile dedicated to the game edition and runtime you checked. If your manager supports profile-specific saves, enable that feature or keep your own save backup outside the game directory.
- Download the intended variant. Select the AI Overhaul main file, AI Overhaul Lite, or Immersive Citizens deliberately. Do not leave multiple alternatives enabled because they happen to be in the same downloaded archive.
- Install the archive through the manager. Let the manager identify the mod structure. If it reports an installer choice, read each option and select only the variant documented for your game. Avoid renaming internal folders to match instructions written for an older release.
- Enable the intended plugin. Check the manager’s plugin pane and confirm that the overhaul’s main plugin, plus any required master files, is enabled. Disable unused alternatives. An installed archive that is not enabled has no effect; an unintended alternative that remains enabled can create conflicts.
- Add only necessary patches. For every city overhaul, NPC appearance package, settlement edit, dialogue or scene mod, and other record-changing plugin, look for a patch that explicitly names your chosen overhaul and compatible versions. Do not infer support from a similar title or from a patch made for the other AI project.
- Deploy or apply the manager’s changes. Resolve file conflicts according to the chosen mod’s instructions. A file overwrite rule and a plugin load order solve different problems: the former controls loose files, while the latter controls records inside plugins.
- Keep a change log. Note the date, selected version, enabled plugins, patches, and any conflict rules. If the game later fails, you can revert one recorded change instead of guessing.
Sort plugins, then read the warnings yourself
Run LOOT after enabling the overhaul and its patches. LOOT is a sorting aid: it uses metadata and masterlists to propose an order and display warnings. It is not a universal compatibility patcher and cannot merge two incompatible NPC records for you.
- Update LOOT’s masterlist when the application offers that function.
- Run the sort for the profile you are actually testing.
- Read every warning, requirement notice, and incompatibility message rather than accepting the order blindly.
- Open the overhaul’s own compatibility documentation and compare its required order with LOOT’s result.
- Apply a documented manual adjustment only when the mod author or a matching patch instructs you to do so. Record that adjustment in your change log.
Immersive Citizens documentation gives ordering requirements relative to particular plugins and supported patches. Those rules are conditional, not a template that can be copied to an unrelated loadout. AI Overhaul’s direct NPC edits and markers likewise make the records winning in your final order important. If a patch author provides a required sequence, that instruction takes precedence over a generic “sort and forget” workflow.

Understand the conflict classes
NPC and AI records
The main AI Overhaul version directly edits NPC AI data and packages. A later plugin that changes the same NPC can overwrite some of those records, while an earlier one may be overwritten by the overhaul. The result can be a missing schedule, a different sandbox routine, or an NPC that follows only part of the intended behavior. Use a patch that combines the records; changing order alone is not a reliable merge.
Idle markers and world objects
The main AI Overhaul release also adds idle markers. Mods that alter the same locations or nav-related objects can conflict even when they do not advertise themselves as AI mods. Check settlement, interior, and worldspace edits in addition to NPC plugins.

City, village, and interior layouts
Immersive Citizens identifies city, village, and interior layout edits as a principal class of plugins that can disrupt its AI. A layout change can alter the spaces, doors, furniture, or routes its packages expect. Dialogue, scene, and cell-setting changes can also conflict. Check the project’s current compatibility list for every such plugin in your loadout.
Appearance and dialogue overhauls
An appearance mod may edit the same NPC record without changing AI. A dialogue or scene mod may alter behavior indirectly. A dedicated patch must match both the selected AI overhaul and the versions of the other mods; a patch made for AI Overhaul is not evidence that Immersive Citizens is supported, or vice versa.
Configure each project within its documented scope
AI Overhaul SSE
Choose main or Lite before enabling files. The main version is the broader behavior package, with the author-described counts of roughly 250 edited NPCs, 275 or more custom packages and behaviors, and 300 or more idle markers in the 1.8.5 readme. Lite is intended to reduce direct NPC edits and extra markers, but its feature set is correspondingly lighter. Configuration therefore starts with selecting the correct variant and resolving its documented patches; do not assume that a setting from one variant exists in the other.

After deployment, inspect the enabled plugin and the included readme for any version-specific options. If a new file presents an installer choice, make the choice during installation rather than enabling every optional component afterward.
Immersive Citizens
Follow the current project documentation for its main plugin and supported patches. The author provides detailed compatibility and load-order guidance because city and interior edits can change the environment in which its packages operate.
For an existing save to which you have added extra NPCs, Immersive Citizens documents a configuration route using its “Citizens control” power to update the mod’s data. Use that procedure only for the documented purpose and version. It is not a general repair command for every AI overhaul or every broken save.
Can you install an overhaul on an existing save?
You can test the change on an existing save, but the available material does not establish a universal safety guarantee for installing, updating, or removing an NPC overhaul mid-playthrough. Treat a new game or a disposable test save as the lowest-risk option.
- Exit the game and make a manual copy of the target save.
- Back up the manager profile, plugin list, and conflict rules.
- Install one overhaul or one update only; do not combine it with a large mod-list revision.
- Launch to the main menu, then load the backed-up test save.
- Check several affected NPCs, their schedules, a settlement changed by your loadout, and any documented compatibility scenario.
- Keep the change only after repeated sessions show the expected behavior. If the save fails to load or behaves incorrectly, restore the profile and save rather than repeatedly removing and reinstalling files on the same save.
For Immersive Citizens, use the documented “Citizens control” update action when you have added NPCs to an existing save. Do not generalize that step to AI Overhaul SSE or to an update the documentation does not mention.

A controlled first test
Testing should isolate the overhaul from unrelated changes. Start with the smallest profile that still contains the game, its required masters, the selected AI mod, and the patches you need to represent the real loadout.
- Confirm the game reaches the main menu without a missing-master message.
- Load the test save and wait long enough for an NPC schedule transition rather than judging behavior immediately after fast travel.
- Visit an affected town or interior and observe whether NPCs can reach their documented destinations.
- Check a location edited by another plugin and compare the behavior with the compatibility notes.
- Test combat response, dialogue or scene-heavy areas, and any appearance-overhaul patch that is part of your final profile.
- Add unrelated mods one at a time after the baseline works. Keep the plugin list and test result for each addition.
This procedure is a risk-control method, not a performance or success-rate claim. The available documentation provides no independent statistic for safety, stability, or frame-rate impact.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The game reports a missing master
Return to the requirements for the exact file and edition. Verify that every listed master is installed and enabled, and that you did not install a legacy file for a different Skyrim release. Sorting cannot supply a missing master.
An NPC has the wrong schedule or no behavior change
Confirm that the intended overhaul plugin is enabled, then inspect which later plugin edits the same NPC or AI records. Find a patch that names the exact overhaul and versions. If no patch exists, choose which mod’s records you need and accept that the other behavior may not survive; do not assume that moving plugins randomly will merge them.

A town or interior behaves incorrectly
Look first for a city, village, interior, worldspace, or cell-setting conflict. For Immersive Citizens, compare the location mod with the project’s current compatibility list and required order. For AI Overhaul, check edits to NPCs, packages, markers, and the surrounding location. Disable one suspected location edit in a copied profile and retest.
LOOT shows a warning after sorting
Open the warning and follow its named requirement or incompatibility. Then consult the overhaul and patch documentation. Do not dismiss a warning merely because the game launches; a load-order warning may describe a behavior conflict that appears only later.
The mod worked in a new test but not in an old save
Restore the backup and compare a new game with the existing save. If the project documents a save-update action, use it exactly as described. Otherwise, do not keep cycling removal and reinstallation on the same save; return to the known-good profile and decide whether a new game is warranted.
Updating or removing an AI overhaul
Read the update and uninstall notes for the exact release before changing files. Back up the save and profile again, disable only one project at a time, and test the result on a copy. An update can change records or requirements even when its name looks familiar. Removing an overhaul can leave a save with data that was created or altered by the project, so the absence of a documented cleanup procedure is a reason to prefer a rollback or new game rather than an improvised uninstall.

Keep the installation maintainable
- Save the exact downloaded archives and readmes with your mod profile.
- Record the game runtime, overhaul version, patch versions, LOOT warnings, and manual order changes.
- Recheck requirements and compatibility after a game-runtime update or a major mod update.
- When a patch disappears or becomes outdated, do not substitute a similarly named file without confirming support.
- Use a separate test profile for experiments and preserve a stable profile for an ongoing playthrough.
Mod compatibility is time-sensitive.
