Skyrim Special Edition is the edition you need for the free PS5-generation upgrade. You do not have to buy Anniversary Edition merely to play the optimized PS5 version. Anniversary Edition is a separate purchase that adds Creation Club content to Special Edition. Your route also depends on whether your PS4 copy is digital or on disc, and which PlayStation Network account bought the game or add-ons.
The phrase “PS5 DLC” causes confusion because it can mean two different things: Bethesda’s free next-generation upgrade, or the paid Anniversary content upgrade. The distinction determines what you need to buy and what you must do when launching the game.

The direct answer
If you already own The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on PlayStation, that ownership is enough for the PS5-generation version. Bethesda describes the upgrade as free and says it optimizes the game with enhanced graphics, faster loading times and other improvements.

There is one important hardware distinction: a physical PS4 owner must keep the Special Edition disc, insert it in the PS5 and leave it available whenever the disc-based upgraded game is played. A digital owner instead relies on the PSN account that purchased the game and any eligible add-ons.
What “PS5 DLC” can mean
People commonly use “DLC” to describe two separate Bethesda offerings:
- Free next-generation upgrade: the PS5-optimized version associated with an eligible Special Edition purchase. It improves presentation and loading performance; it does not turn your copy into Anniversary Edition.
- Anniversary Edition upgrade: a paid content upgrade that adds Creation Club material to Special Edition. This is optional for someone whose only goal is to play Skyrim on PS5.
Decide which of those outcomes you want before opening the PlayStation Store. If you only need the PS5 version, look for the entitlement attached to Special Edition. If you want the extra creations, check whether the Anniversary upgrade is already owned by your account before paying again.

The table separates game ownership from content ownership. A Special Edition disc or digital license establishes the base-game path; Anniversary adds content on top of that path.

If your copy is digital
Use the purchasing PSN account
Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation account that bought Special Edition. Open your game library and view Skyrim’s available versions or add-ons. The console should recognize the base-game entitlement and present the applicable PS5 download or version selection.
Check add-on ownership before buying
Bethesda’s general next-generation DLC guidance says eligible purchased digital DLC transfers when the same platform account that bought it is signed in. That is an account rule, not a guarantee that every possible add-on has an identical listing in every region. Confirm that the intended PSN account owns the add-on and that it appears as purchased or downloadable in the store or game library.
Do not infer ownership from the console alone
A PS5 can contain several user profiles, but a game or upgrade is not automatically owned by every profile. If one account bought Anniversary Edition and another account launches Skyrim, the second profile may see an upgrade prompt. Switch to the purchasing account and check its transaction and library entries before paying a second time.

The disc remains part of the license path
Bethesda’s PS4-to-PS5 instructions state that the disc must be inserted to receive the upgrade and is still required to play. Installing the game to the PS5 does not replace that ownership check. Keep the disc undamaged and accessible whenever you intend to launch the disc-based version.

How to move from disc to PS5
- Insert the Skyrim Special Edition PS4 disc into the PS5’s disc drive.
- Sign in with the PSN account you intend to use for the purchase and play session.
- Open the game hub or library entry and select the PS5 version or upgrade option when it appears.
- Download and install the PS5 version while the disc is recognized.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you start the upgraded game; the console uses it to verify your entitlement.
This route applies to a PS5 model with a disc drive. A disc cannot be used by a digital-only PS5 without a compatible drive, so a digital license is the practical route for that hardware.
Adding Anniversary to a disc copy
Special Edition disc owners can buy the Anniversary upgrade when the disc is in the console and the game is installed. The upgrade is separate from the free generation upgrade, so owning the disc alone does not mean the Creation Club package is already included.
What Anniversary Edition adds
Anniversary Edition’s defining difference is its Creation Club content. Bethesda’s support description identifies 74 Creations, with 48 described as currently available and 26 described as to be released, showcasing more than 500 individual elements. Bethesda did not provide a publication year for that support wording, and those figures may represent an older content snapshot rather than a current inventory. Treat them as a description of the support article, not a promise that the same count is displayed in the store today.
The practical choice is therefore content-driven:
- Choose Special Edition plus the free PS5 upgrade if you want the core game on PS5 and do not need the additional creations.
- Choose Anniversary Edition, or buy its upgrade, if you specifically want the Creation Club additions bundled with it.
Store names, regional bundles and the currently displayed Creation Club inventory can change. Read the item description attached to your account and region before completing a purchase.

Account and profile problems
Another profile owns Anniversary
Bethesda warns that a profile may be prompted to upgrade even when another PlayStation profile on the same console owns Anniversary Edition. The prompt does not prove that the content is absent from the console; it may simply mean the launching profile has no purchase entitlement.
- Exit Skyrim and identify which PSN profile bought Anniversary Edition.
- Sign in with that purchasing profile and check the game library or PlayStation Store transaction history.
- Restore licenses if the purchase is present but the console does not show it as available.
- Only buy the upgrade again if the purchasing account truly has no entitlement and the store confirms a new transaction is required.
DLC appears missing after the move
First verify that the same account used on PS4 is signed in on PS5. Then check the account’s game library and the Skyrim add-on list. Bethesda’s transfer guidance applies to eligible purchased digital DLC; it does not make content purchased by a different account appear under yours.
The upgrade option is absent for a disc
Confirm that the disc is the Special Edition PS4 product, that it is inserted, and that the PS5 has finished installing the game. Check that you are using a PS5 with a disc drive and that the console is connected to the account that will play the game. If the disc is from a different region, the store listing and entitlement can also differ, so review the product’s regional details rather than assuming every disc maps to the same listing.

Which purchase path fits your situation?
You already own Special Edition digitally
Use that digital entitlement for the free PS5-generation version. Add Anniversary only if its Creation Club content is wanted. Make every check and download under the PSN account that bought Special Edition and any add-on.

You own the Special Edition PS4 disc
Keep the disc and use it in the PS5’s drive for the generation upgrade and every subsequent launch. Purchase Anniversary separately if desired; the disc is still needed for the base-game verification.
You own neither edition
Buy a listing that includes Special Edition if your goal is PS5 play. Select an Anniversary Edition listing only when you also want its Creation Club package. A standalone Anniversary upgrade is intended for someone who already owns Special Edition, so do not treat it as a replacement for the base game.
You share a console
Decide which profile will own the purchase, then complete the transaction on that profile. Other profiles may not receive the same upgrade prompt or entitlement, and Bethesda specifically notes that a non-purchasing profile can be asked to upgrade even when another profile owns Anniversary.

- Identify whether “DLC” means the free PS5-generation upgrade or paid Anniversary content.
- Confirm whether your Special Edition license is digital or tied to a PS4 disc.
- For a disc, verify that your PS5 has a disc drive and that you will retain the disc.
- Sign in with the PSN account that purchased the base game and any add-ons.
- Check the account’s library and transaction history before buying Anniversary again.
- Read the current regional store description because content lists and availability can change.
In short, Special Edition is the required foundation for the PS5 version; Anniversary Edition is the optional content expansion. Your account ownership and, for physical copies, the original disc determine whether the upgrade installs and remains playable.
