To locate Point Nemo, enter 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W into a map search box. In signed decimal degrees, use approximately -48.8767, -123.3933. The result is a position in the South Pacific, roughly 2,688 kilometres from the nearest land according to NOAA’s National Ocean Service.
Use a general-purpose digital map to see the position and its geographic context. Use a nautical chart only when you need navigation information such as depths, landmarks or aids to navigation. A map pin is not a passage plan, and the chart information available for this remote South Pacific position must be checked with the relevant hydrographic authority.

Point Nemo’s coordinates and location
Point Nemo is commonly described as the oceanic pole of inaccessibility: the point in the ocean farthest from land. NOAA’s National Ocean Service gives the commonly cited position as 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. A University of California, Santa Barbara geography reference uses the same coordinate.

| Format | Value | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Degrees, minutes | 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W | 48 degrees 52.6 minutes south; 123 degrees 23.6 minutes west |
| Signed decimal degrees | -48.8767, -123.3933 | Latitude first, longitude second; minus means south or west |
NOAA identifies Ducie Island to the north, Motu Nui to the northeast and Maher Island to the south among the nearest land areas. Its published estimate places the nearest land about 2,688 kilometres away. That distance is an approximate geographic description, not a statement that a vessel could reach any of those islands by a direct or safe route.
Before you search: choose the right coordinate format
Both coordinate versions identify the same location. Degrees-and-minutes notation is useful when you are copying a position from NOAA or a chart. Signed decimal degrees are usually faster to paste into a consumer map or software field. In either format, latitude comes first.
Do not add a plus sign to the longitude or silently change the hemisphere. “S” means south of the Equator and “W” means west of the prime meridian. In signed notation, those directions are represented by minus signs. A comma or a space normally separates latitude and longitude, but the exact separator accepted by an application can vary.
Keep enough digits for the intended purpose. The six-decimal representation is a convenient transcription of the published position, not a claim that the point has been surveyed to six-decimal precision. For a broad visual check, fewer digits still place you in the same South Pacific region; for a faithful lookup, use the full commonly cited pair.
Find Point Nemo in a digital map
The most dependable method is to search for the coordinates rather than the name. Place-name searches can return an article, a user-created marker or no result, whereas a latitude-and-longitude pair identifies a precise position.
Enter the decimal coordinates
- Open Google Maps or another digital map with a coordinate-search field.
- Enter
-48.8767, -123.3933, with latitude first and longitude second. - Submit the search. The map should move to the South Pacific and display a marker or map centre near the coordinate.
- Zoom out far enough to see the surrounding ocean and the nearest land areas, then zoom in again if you need to inspect the local map view.
Google’s current interface labels and pin presentation can change, and official Google help instructions for this exact search were not established here. The coordinate-entry approach is therefore the practical method; do not rely on a particular button name or assume that Google will label the result “Point Nemo.”
Use the degrees-and-minutes form
If you prefer the NOAA format, enter 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W. You can type the degree symbol and a minutes mark, or use the equivalent notation accepted by your map application. Keep the comma between latitude and longitude and retain the hemisphere letters.
If the search field rejects symbols, convert the values to decimal degrees. For latitude, 52.6 minutes is 52.6 ÷ 60 = 0.8767 degrees, so 48°52.6′S becomes about 48.8767° south, written -48.8767. For longitude, 23.6 minutes is 23.6 ÷ 60 = 0.3933 degrees, so 123°23.6′W becomes about 123.3933° west, written -123.3933.
Check that the result is in the right ocean
- The marker should be over open water in the South Pacific, not on a continent or island.
- Both decimal values should be negative in the signed format.
- The latitude should be about 49 degrees south and the longitude about 123 degrees west.
- If the map shows the Northern or Eastern Hemisphere, a hemisphere sign or coordinate order was probably changed.
- Zoom out until you can see the wider Pacific context; a very close view may contain no labels at all.
Common coordinate-entry errors
Reversing latitude and longitude
Most coordinate fields expect latitude first, then longitude. Entering -123.3933, -48.8767 reverses the pair and produces an invalid or completely different position because a latitude cannot be more than 90 degrees from the Equator.

Dropping the minus signs
48.8767, 123.3933 describes a point north and east of the Equator and prime meridian, not Point Nemo. If you use hemisphere letters instead, write south and west explicitly.
Mixing decimal minutes and decimal degrees
The value 52.6 is minutes in 48°52.6′S, not 0.526 degrees. Convert minutes by dividing by 60 before entering a decimal-degree value.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Rounding too aggressively
Rounding the position to whole degrees still identifies the broad ocean region but moves the marker substantially. Use the published degrees-and-minutes coordinate or the approximately six-decimal decimal form when you want the intended point.
Searching for the name alone
“Point Nemo” is a useful label after you have found the position, but it is not the coordinate itself. A map service may not have an official place-name record or may display a third-party label. Search the numbers first.
Adding a directional letter to signed numbers
Do not combine a negative number with an opposite hemisphere letter, such as -48.8767N. Use either signed decimal notation or degrees with hemisphere letters, not a contradictory mixture.
What a Google Maps view can—and cannot—tell you
A digital map is useful for visual orientation. It can show the point’s position relative to the South Pacific, the broad distribution of islands and continents, and the extreme remoteness implied by the nearest-land distance. It is a convenient way to answer “where is it?” without obtaining a specialist chart.
That view does not by itself provide the navigation information needed to plan an ocean passage. A general map may not show soundings, charted hazards, buoyage, regulated areas or the other details a mariner needs. A marker in a consumer map should not be treated as a verified navigational fix, an anchorage, a safe waypoint or evidence that a route is feasible.
Map imagery and labels can also be sparse over the open ocean. An apparently blank screen does not indicate that the location is missing, land-free in every legal sense or safe for navigation. It simply reflects the purpose and scale of the map display.
Find Point Nemo on a marine chart
A marine chart has a different purpose from a general map. NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey describes nautical charts as products tailored to marine navigation that delineate shorelines and show water depths, prominent topographic features and landmarks, and aids to navigation. NOAA also describes electronic navigational charts (ENCs) as vector products designed to support marine navigation.

To plot Point Nemo on a chart, use the same coordinate pair, but first make sure the chart is appropriate for the area and purpose. A chart catalogue or overview aimed at U.S. waters does not, by itself, prove that a current chart covers this remote South Pacific position.

- Obtain a current chart that actually covers the relevant South Pacific area from the responsible hydrographic authority or chart provider.
- Check the chart title, scale, edition or update information and geographic coverage before plotting.
- Locate the latitude scale on the chart margin. One minute of latitude is one nautical mile on a chart’s latitude scale.
- Measure 48°52.6′S on the latitude scale and project that position across the chart.
- Locate 123°23.6′W on the longitude scale and project it across the chart.
- Mark the intersection, then annotate it with the coordinate and the date or edition of the chart used.
The plotting steps describe the coordinate geometry; they do not establish that a particular printed chart is available, current or suitable for this exact point. The NOAA chart overview used for the navigation distinction describes U.S. chart coverage and does not verify a current chart edition for Point Nemo.
Plot the position in an electronic chart system
- Choose an ENC or other electronic chart product whose coverage includes 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W.
- Confirm the product’s edition, update status and licensing requirements in the chart system.
- Use the system’s coordinate or “go to position” function and enter latitude first, longitude second.
- Enter either
48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′Wor-48.8767, -123.3933, according to the system’s accepted format. - Check the resulting position against the chart scale and displayed geographic features. Do not assume that an empty-looking screen means the ocean is free of hazards; it may indicate chart scale, layer or coverage limits.
Electronic chart systems differ, so the exact menu name and coordinate syntax depend on the manufacturer and chart software. Follow the system’s own documentation and the hydrographic authority’s notices rather than treating a consumer map interface as an ENC.
What to record after plotting
For a classroom, trip-planning or documentation exercise, record the coordinate format you used, the chart title or map service, and the chart edition or update date when one is available. This makes it clear whether the result is a geographic illustration or a navigation reference. If another person enters the same numbers and sees a slightly different display, the recorded format helps identify whether the difference came from rounding, scale or the underlying dataset.
Map versus marine chart
| Question | General digital map | Marine chart |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | General geographic viewing and location context | Marine navigation |
| Typical information | Map position, ocean and land context, place labels and map imagery where available | Water depths, shoreline, landmarks, prominent features and aids to navigation |
| Best use for Point Nemo | Quickly viewing the published coordinate and understanding its remoteness | Professional or voyage-related navigation work when the correct, current coverage is available |
| What is established here | Coordinate entry is a practical way to view the point | No specific current chart edition for this South Pacific position has been verified |
These products are complementary, not interchangeable. A map answers a geographic-location question; a chart is built around navigation. If your goal is simply to see Point Nemo, a coordinate search is sufficient. If you are planning or monitoring a voyage, use official, current chart data and the procedures required by the vessel’s navigation rules.
How precise is “Point Nemo”?
The NOAA coordinate is the best primary-source position for this explanation, and NOAA’s page was updated January 4, 2021. It should be presented as the commonly cited coordinate rather than as a universal, immutable result produced by every geographic dataset.
The exact oceanic pole depends on how a dataset represents coastlines and land boundaries. A specialist secondary reference notes small uncertainties associated with coastline representation, including questions around Antarctica’s ice shelf. Those modelling choices can shift a calculated extremum slightly even though the published coordinate remains the standard reference used by NOAA and other educational sources.
This is why a map marker may not appear at exactly the same pixel, or why two mapping systems may display a slightly different calculated location, without either result changing the basic fact: the position is in the South Pacific and exceptionally far from land.
Distance, nearest land and practical remoteness
NOAA estimates the nearest land at about 2,688 kilometres. The nearest areas it names are Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island. The figure is a distance-to-land estimate, not a radius defining a legal or administrative zone and not a measurement of travel distance over water.

Because Point Nemo is open ocean, the map may show little visual detail at high zoom. That lack of labels is expected. Zooming out is often more informative than zooming in: it reveals the surrounding island groups and the scale of the South Pacific separation.
The named nearest areas are reference points for explaining the calculation, not destinations implied by the coordinate. Their relative directions—Ducie Island north, Motu Nui northeast and Maher Island south—also provide a simple orientation check when viewing a regional map.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need special equipment or a paid product?
No physical product is necessary to perform a coordinate lookup in a consumer map. A chart plotter, printed nautical chart, atlas or positioning device may be useful for a separate educational or navigation task, but none is established as necessary merely to locate the point.
If you need chart information, select the chart service through the relevant hydrographic authority and verify that it covers this South Pacific position. Do not infer coverage from a chart catalogue focused on another region, and do not purchase a chart solely because it contains the words “Point Nemo” in a description without checking its scale, edition and geographic extent.

When a search fails
If a map returns no result, first remove decorative text and enter only the decimal pair: -48.8767, -123.3933. Check that the comma separates latitude and longitude, then try the degrees-and-minutes form. Some applications accept a degree symbol but not a typographic prime mark, while others accept plain text such as 48 52.6 S, 123 23.6 W. The accepted syntax is application-specific, so a failed search does not show that the coordinate is wrong.
If the marker appears on land, compare the displayed values rather than relying only on the visual pin. A reversed pair, omitted minus sign or accidental truncation is more likely than a change in Point Nemo’s location. Re-enter the NOAA position and confirm that the map reports a latitude near 49 degrees south and a longitude near 123 degrees west.
A reliable quick checklist
- Use
48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′Wor-48.8767, -123.3933. - Enter latitude first and longitude second.
- Keep south and west signs or hemisphere letters.
- Confirm the marker is in the South Pacific.
- Expect the nearest land to be about 2,688 kilometres away according to NOAA.
- Use a general map for visual location, not as a navigation chart.
- For marine work, verify the chart authority, coverage, edition and updates for this exact area.
- Record the coordinate format and chart or map version if you need a reproducible result.

How far is Point Nemo from land?
NOAA’s National Ocean Service gives an approximate nearest-land distance of 2,688 kilometres. It names Ducie Island, Motu Nui and Maher Island among the nearest land areas.
Will Google Maps label the pin “Point Nemo”?
Not necessarily. Interface labels and place-name records vary, so search the coordinate pair rather than relying on a name label. The marker may simply show the geographic position in open water.
Can I use a Google Maps pin as a sailing waypoint?
A consumer map view is useful for geographic orientation but is not a substitute for a current nautical chart. It may not show depths, hazards, regulated areas or aids to navigation. Use appropriate official chart data for navigation work.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if the degrees-and-minutes entry is rejected?
Convert the values to signed decimal degrees. Divide 52.6 by 60 and add it to 48 to obtain about 48.8767; divide 23.6 by 60 and add it to 123 to obtain about 123.3933, then enter -48.8767, -123.3933.
Is there one definitive marine chart for Point Nemo?
A current chart edition covering this South Pacific position was not established here. Check the responsible hydrographic authority or chart provider for coverage, scale, edition and updates before relying on a chart.
Why might two maps show slightly different positions?
The published coordinate is a standard reference, but calculated oceanic poles can vary slightly with coastline and land-boundary modelling, including how Antarctica’s ice shelf is represented. Small display differences do not change the point’s South Pacific location.
Do I need to buy an atlas, chart or GPS device to find Point Nemo?
No. A coordinate search in a digital map is enough for a basic location lookup. Printed charts, atlases and positioning devices are optional tools for other educational or navigation purposes.
