Start with comfort and visibility, not a preset sensitivity number. Check camera effects and field of view (if available), then tune look sensitivity with your own input device. After that, review controls, accessibility, subtitle and interface readability, and brightness. Change one setting at a time and test it in a short stretch of play; there is no universally best value for every game, platform, controller, mouse, display, or player.
1. Reduce camera effects that hurt comfort or combat tracking
Look first for motion blur, camera shake, camera bob or sway, and stabilization options. Turn down or disable only the effects that make you uncomfortable or obscure enemy movement. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 recommends offering ways to turn off effects such as camera shake, bobbing, and motion blur; it does not mean every player should disable them.

Stabilization can also involve a tradeoff. Bethesda’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle accessibility guide describes stabilization as a way to reduce discomfort, while noting that it can reduce combat animation. If the game provides such a setting, compare comfort with how clearly you can read attacks.

A wider field of view reveals more at the edges of the screen, but may introduce a distorted or “fishbowl” look and can affect performance. A narrower view may reduce that distortion but show less of the surrounding action. Bethesda’s Indiana Jones guide describes these as tradeoffs rather than identifying one best setting.

Make small changes and check both peripheral visibility and image comfort during movement and combat. Do not carry a number from another game as a recommended value: field-of-view controls and their effects vary by title, platform, display, and implementation. Some graphics options may not be available on every setup; Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered support guidance notes that availability can depend on platform, monitor, and graphics card.
3. Tune camera sensitivity with your actual input device
There is no reliable “set it to this number” answer without knowing the game and whether you use a controller or mouse. Raise or lower look sensitivity in small increments, then test two things: turning far enough to follow a moving target, and making small corrections without overshooting.

Settings can interact. The community Elden Ring First Person Souls mod documents first-person camera FOV and sensitivity controls and notes that camera sensitivity is also affected by the game’s input-sensitivity setting. This is mod-specific evidence, not an official FromSoftware feature or a universal rule for Soulslikes. If changing one sensitivity control seems to have little effect, check whether another input or camera setting also governs the response.

Before adapting to an awkward default, check whether the game lets you remap inputs or choose between holding and toggling an action. Look as well for options that change repeated presses or reduce motion. These can make play more comfortable or manageable, but availability differs by game.

Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 accessibility overview documents examples including remapping, repeated-press and hold options, and motion-reduction presets. Treat those as examples of categories to look for, not features guaranteed in a first-person Soulslike.
5. Make subtitles, interface text, and brightness readable
Check the target game’s settings for subtitle size, captions, subtitle backgrounds, and interface font scaling. Increase or enable the options that help you read dialogue and HUD information during play; the exact controls vary by title. Bethesda’s Indiana Jones guide and Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 overview document examples of these readability options.

If the game provides a brightness calibration screen, use its instructions rather than copying a brightness value from another display. Oblivion Remastered’s brightness guidance, for example, says to adjust until a symbol is barely visible. That instruction is specific to that game’s test, not a general calibration standard.
A quick way to test changes
- Pick a safe, repeatable area where you can move the camera and observe targets.
- Change one setting, using a small adjustment rather than jumping to an extreme.
- Play briefly and judge comfort, target visibility, and control precision.
- Keep the change if it helps; otherwise restore it and test the next option.
Verify the game and platform before relying on an exact menu path, default, or setting value. The options and labels are not consistent across Soulslikes, and a display or graphics setup may limit what appears.
