Before converting a large image batch, decide the output format, quality or compression, dimensions, metadata and color-profile handling, destination, and filename or overwrite behavior. Run a representative sample first: the right choices depend on the converter, file type, and where the images will be used.
What to check before starting a batch
- Confirm the source selection. Check that the intended files are included and whether the job should search subfolders. Photoshop’s batch options include source-location and subfolder controls: Adobe Photoshop batch processing.
- Choose an output format. Match the format to the receiving website, app, or workflow, and confirm that your converter supports it. Photoshop Image Processor provides file-type choices, while ShareX documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP conversion: Adobe Image Processor and ShareX image converter. No format is best for every destination.
- Set format-specific quality or compression. For lossy formats, balance visual fidelity against output size and inspect a test file at the size it will actually be viewed. ShareX has JPEG and WebP quality controls; Adobe Image Processor describes JPEG quality on a 0–12 scale. These controls use different scales and should not be compared directly.
- Decide whether to resize. Keep the original pixel dimensions unless the destination requires smaller or otherwise constrained images. Conversion does not necessarily resize: ShareX describes its converter as changing encoding, not dimensions. Corel AfterShot offers separate do-not-resize and fit-to-dimensions choices: Corel AfterShot user guide. If resizing, set the intended bounds and check how the application handles aspect ratio.
- Choose what to do with metadata and color profiles. Determine whether the receiving workflow needs information such as EXIF or XMP metadata, copyright details, or an embedded color profile. AfterShot exposes controls for these items, and Adobe Image Processor includes a copyright metadata option. Select a policy that meets the delivery requirement rather than assuming all metadata should be kept or stripped.
- Set the destination and naming behavior. Use a separate, easy-to-inspect output folder for the first run. Choose names that remain distinct, then check whether existing files can be overwritten or how collisions are handled. Adobe states that Image Processor saves each processed file with a unique name and does not overwrite files; behavior differs in other converters. AfterShot also documents naming controls.
- Check errors and completion reporting. Find out whether the application stops on an error, continues, or reports failures after processing. Photoshop batch options include error handling, and VideoStudio describes a task report after conversion: Corel VideoStudio user guide.
Run a test before the full conversion
Choose a representative handful of files, including any with unusual dimensions, transparency, or metadata that matter to the job. Apply the planned settings and inspect the results for appearance, dimensions, file size, metadata, filenames, and destination. ShareX recommends reviewing the preview and using a separate output folder when testing; PaintShop Pro’s batch instructions also call for reviewing output settings before running the batch: Corel PaintShop Pro user guide.

If the sample does not meet the destination’s requirements, adjust the relevant setting and test again before processing the remaining files. A test helps catch a wrong output format, unexpected resizing, naming collisions, or an unsuitable quality setting without risking the whole batch.
Save a profile for repeat jobs
If the same combination of format, dimensions, metadata, destination, and naming rules will be used again, save it as a profile when the converter supports that feature. Corel VideoStudio documents creating and applying batch-conversion profiles. A saved profile can reduce repeated setup, but check that it still matches the current delivery requirements before reusing it.
