After the layout feels right, enable Lock Home screen layout if icons move accidentally. App icon badges are optional. These controls and available choices vary by Galaxy model, region, and software version, so use the labels shown on your device rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same menu.
Check your software before changing anything
Samsung’s current guidance for these appearance controls is written for supported devices using One UI 7. A Galaxy phone or tablet on another One UI release may show different names, positions, or choices. Samsung also warns that availability varies by model, software version, and region. The instructions below therefore describe the One UI 7 controls and explain where your device may differ.

Open the Home screen settings by touching and holding an empty area of the Home screen and choosing the settings option, or by opening the Home screen section in the main Settings app. The exact entry point can differ. If a setting named in this guide is absent, install any pending software update and check the Home screen settings again; do not assume a missing option can be added through a third-party launcher.

The grid controls how many rows and columns are available for app icons and widgets. It is the setting that changes the amount of space each item gets, so set it before arranging individual pages.

| Grid choice documented for One UI 7 | What it does | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 6 | Fewer columns, with larger spaces per item than a denser arrangement | Readers who want larger touch targets and a less crowded page | Fewer apps and widgets fit on one page |
| 5 × 6 | Adds a column while keeping six rows | Readers who want more shortcuts without moving to a separate page | Icons and widget slots are more tightly packed |
Samsung’s One UI 7 troubleshooting material lists 4 × 6 and 5 × 6 as the supported Home screen choices in that guidance. The numbers mean columns by rows; your device may present them in a different visual order. A denser grid is not automatically better: it gives you more slots, while a less dense grid leaves more room around each target.
How to change it
- Open Home screen settings from an empty area of the Home screen or from the Home screen section of Settings.
- Choose Home screen grid.
- Select the available layout, such as 4 × 6 or 5 × 6, and apply it.
- Review every page afterward. Changing the grid can move icons and widgets because their positions must fit the new cells.
When the old arrangement disappears
A software update or a Smart Switch restore or transfer can alter an earlier arrangement. If the phone looks different after either event, check the grid before manually rebuilding pages. Samsung’s One UI 7 troubleshooting guidance specifically advises checking the current grid rather than assuming the previous layout was preserved.
Portrait and landscape are not identical
On devices covered by Samsung’s One UI 7 guide, landscape mode automatically realigns the arrangement. Samsung gives 4 × 6 becoming 6 × 4 as an example. Editing is restricted in landscape: moving or deleting icons and widgets and resizing folders may not be available. Return to portrait mode when you need to make layout changes, then rotate the device again to inspect the result.
Samsung Korea’s regional support material says 4 × 5 and 5 × 5 are not default One UI 7 choices there and mentions Good Lock as a way to configure them. That is regional guidance, not a promise that those grids or Good Lock are available on every Galaxy model or in every country.

Decide whether app and widget labels help you
In the One UI 7 documentation, the control is at Settings > Home screen > App and widget style. From there, you can control labels and related appearance options.
What labels change
App labels put the name beneath an icon, making unfamiliar or similarly colored icons easier to identify. Widget labels can add a corresponding name and improve visual alignment. Samsung requires app labels to be enabled before widget labels can be enabled.
Labels consume vertical space. Samsung states: “The space occupied by the labels reduces the overall height of the widget, sometimes limiting the content displayed.” A widget that showed several lines without a label may show fewer lines after labels are turned on. Third-party app widgets do not receive the label treatment described in that One UI 7 guide.
Practical choice
- Turn labels on when recognition and consistent alignment matter more than maximum information density.
- Leave them off when you use distinctive icons, want a cleaner page, or need a widget to show as much content as possible.
- If you enable widget labels, inspect each important widget afterward; clipping is a space effect, not a fault with the widget.
Set app icon size for readability, not a universal “best” value
One UI 7 places an app-size slider under App and widget style. Drag it until icons are easy to recognize and tap without making the page unnecessarily sparse. There is no single correct setting: eyesight, hand size, wallpaper contrast, and the number of shortcuts you keep on the first page all change the useful balance.

| If you move the slider toward larger icons | If you move it toward smaller icons |
|---|---|
| Icons are easier to distinguish and touch; fewer items may fit comfortably. | More shortcuts can fit; individual targets and visual details are smaller. |
| Useful for a simplified page or anyone who frequently mis-taps. | Useful for a dense work or communication page with many frequently used apps. |
Change the size before fine-tuning widget positions. Otherwise, a later slider adjustment can leave gaps or force another round of rearrangement. Use the controls your own Galaxy shows, because the documented One UI 7 behavior is not a guarantee for every release.
Use widgets for information or actions you actually need
A widget earns Home screen space when it saves you from opening an app for a recurring glance or action: a calendar agenda, weather, timer, media controls, or another function you check often. Adding every available widget creates a page that is harder to scan and leaves less room for direct app shortcuts.
Add a widget
- Touch and hold an empty Home screen area.
- Choose Widgets.
- Select an app, choose one of its available widget designs, and add it to the page.
- Drag it to an open position, then return to portrait mode if you need to make further edits on a One UI 7 device with the documented landscape restrictions.
Resize and configure only when supported
Touch and hold a widget to look for resize handles or a settings option. Supported widgets can expose one or both controls; others have a fixed size or no additional appearance choices. Resizing changes how much information is visible, but it does not guarantee that an app will display every field at every size. Check the widget after resizing rather than assuming all widgets behave alike.

Combine widgets with a stack
Samsung documents widget stacks as a way to place multiple widgets in one Home screen area. A stack can preserve space while allowing you to switch between related views. Stack behavior, available widgets, and editing controls vary by device and widget, so use the stack options that appear when you touch and hold the widget. If switching between stacked widgets is slower than opening the app, a single larger widget or a direct app icon may be the more usable choice.

Lock the finished layout when accidental moves are a problem
Lock Home screen layout prevents accidental repositioning or removal of icons and widgets. Enable it after you finish choosing the grid, icon size, labels, and widgets. This is especially useful when icons keep moving after a long press, when the phone is used one-handed, or when children regularly handle it.
- Open Home screen settings.
- Turn on Lock Home screen layout.
- Try a deliberate edit only if you need to confirm the lock is active; ordinary drag-and-drop changes should no longer apply.
When you need to redesign a page, return to the same setting and turn the lock off first. Re-enable it after the changes. The lock protects placement; it does not freeze the contents or settings inside a widget.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a badge style that matches how you handle notifications
Samsung’s built-in app icon badge control lets you enable badges and choose either a dot or a number style. A dot signals that something is waiting without adding a count. A number is useful when the quantity affects your next action, such as several unread messages, but it can make a busy Home screen feel more urgent.
- Choose numbers when counts help you triage notifications.
- Choose dots when you want a quieter indication and normally review notifications from the notification shade.
- Turn badges off if repeated counts encourage unnecessary checking.
The setting is part of Samsung’s notification and Home screen controls; the exact menu wording and location can vary with One UI version and model. You do not need a separate utility to obtain dot or number badges.

A decision guide for common layouts
| Your priority | Starting choices | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Large, easy-to-hit targets | 4 × 6 grid, larger icon size, labels if icon recognition is difficult | Fewer shortcuts fit; labels can reduce widget content |
| Many shortcuts on one page | 5 × 6 grid, smaller or medium icon size, labels off if names are obvious | More visual density and potentially smaller touch targets |
| Information at a glance | One or two genuinely useful widgets, resized where supported | Check for clipped content and avoid filling every free cell |
| Stable family or work phone | Finish the layout, then enable Lock Home screen layout | Unlock before making future edits |
| Notification-driven workflow | Number badges for count-based triage | Counts can add visual pressure; dots are less prominent |
These are preference starting points, not performance measurements. Samsung’s documentation describes what the controls do, but it does not establish that one combination is best for every user.
Troubleshoot the changes
The grid you want is not listed
Confirm the phone’s One UI version, model, and region. One UI 7 guidance lists 4 × 6 and 5 × 6, while Samsung Korea discusses other possibilities through Good Lock. A different region or software release may expose fewer or different choices. Do not treat a tutorial for another model as proof that your device should have the same grid.
Icons moved after an update or transfer
Check Home screen grid and then inspect each page in portrait mode. Updates and Smart Switch transfers can change an earlier arrangement. Rebuild only after confirming the grid and icon-size settings, or you may have to reposition everything again.
A widget shows less information
Check whether widget labels were enabled, because labels take vertical space. Then touch and hold the widget to see whether resizing or a widget-specific settings panel is available. If neither appears, that widget may not support those controls.
You cannot move an icon or resize a folder
Rotate back to portrait on a One UI 7 device covered by Samsung’s landscape guidance. If editing is still blocked, check whether Lock Home screen layout is enabled and turn it off before editing.
The appearance menu does not match this guide
Use the labels and controls actually shown on your Galaxy. Samsung’s One UI 7 instructions are version-specific, and availability can differ by model and region. The absence of a documented option is a compatibility difference, not evidence that the phone is malfunctioning.
Recommended order of changes
- Check the One UI version and open Home screen settings.
- Select the grid that gives each icon and widget enough room.
- Set app icon size so targets are readable and tappable.
- Enable or disable labels, remembering that widget labels reduce visible widget height.
- Add only the widgets that replace a repeated trip into an app; resize or stack them when the widget supports it.
- Choose dot or number badges according to whether counts help you act.
- Enable Lock Home screen layout after the arrangement has survived a quick usability check.
The most important change is the one that removes friction from your own routine. Start with the grid and icon size, because they determine the space available; then add labels and widgets only where their information is worth the space they consume.
