For a dark, mostly still scene, start with your Galaxy’s Night mode and keep the phone steady. If Night mode is unavailable or you need more control, use Pro mode: lengthen the shutter for stationary subjects, raise ISO only as needed, and use a faster shutter for moving subjects. There is no single ISO or shutter speed that works for every Galaxy model and night scene.
Start with Night mode for a still, dim scene
Night mode automates a low-light capture by combining multiple frames. Samsung UK’s Night mode help page, updated 26 July 2023, says its processing combines 30 images into one shot; that figure describes Samsung’s explanation, not a guaranteed count for every Galaxy model or software version. On many Galaxy phones, open Camera > More > Night. The mode’s placement varies by model and software. On devices running One UI 8.5, Samsung says Night mode may appear as a moon icon in Photo mode when lighting conditions call for it. If you do not see it, check your model’s Camera interface and Samsung’s Night mode availability guidance rather than assuming your phone is faulty.

Night mode needs time to capture and combine frames, so movement by the phone can soften the result. Samsung UK advises keeping the phone as steady as possible and suggests a tripod if possible. For a stationary scene, an optional smartphone tripod or phone tripod mount can help; it will not freeze a person, pet, or vehicle moving in the frame. Samsung’s camera-mode guidance covers the stability advice.

Use Pro mode when you need to control exposure
Pro mode is useful when Night mode is unavailable or when you want to choose the balance between brightness, motion blur, and image noise. The available controls differ across Galaxy models. Samsung’s camera-mode guide describes shutter speed and ISO; some devices also offer exposure value and white balance controls.

There is no universal numeric recipe: the lens, sensor, processing, light level, and subject movement all affect the result. Samsung’s examples illustrate how specific a setup can be: a photographer’s Galaxy S21 Ultra example uses an 8-second shutter, ISO 50, white balance 4300, and infinity focus while briefly lighting the foreground with a flashlight; an older Galaxy S20 Ultra example uses a 30-second exposure for a starry sky. Choose settings according to what is moving
City lights, buildings, or a night sky
These scenes are often relatively stationary. Start with Night mode and steady the phone. In Pro mode, try a longer shutter incrementally and check the result for blur. A supported phone can make a long exposure more practical, but moving lights or clouds may still streak.
People, pets, or other moving subjects
Use a faster shutter to reduce motion blur. Because a faster shutter captures less light, the photo may come out darker; raising ISO can help, with increased noise as the tradeoff. If your subject is not staying still, a long exposure is unlikely to preserve sharp detail.

Check camera settings and lens condition if results look wrong
Preview is unusually dark
If the preview seems unexpectedly dim, a Camera Assistant limit may be affecting the camera. Samsung’s troubleshooting steps say to check Camera Assistant’s minimum shutter speed and maximum ISO controls and set them to None for a brighter preview. Camera Assistant availability depends on whether Good Lock is supported in your country. Follow Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guidance for the relevant steps.
Bright points streak or create glare
Fingerprints, dust, or smudges on the lens can worsen glare around streetlights and other bright points. Clean the lens, then try changing the angle or avoiding a strong light source where possible, as Samsung recommends in the same troubleshooting guide.
