Turn on Emergency Bypass for calls
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit, then tap Ringtone.
- Turn on Emergency Bypass, then tap Done.
Apple Support says this setting allows sounds and vibrations from the contact even when the iPhone or notifications are silenced. The setting is attached to an individual contact; the person does not have to be an emergency-services contact.

Turn it on separately for texts
- Open the same contact and tap Edit.
- Tap Text Tone, then turn on Emergency Bypass.
- Tap Done to save.
Ringtone and Text Tone are separate controls. Enabling the option under Ringtone covers calls; enabling it under Text Tone covers texts. Choose both if you want both kinds of alert to sound or vibrate.

Choose Emergency Bypass or a Focus allowance
Emergency Bypass is useful when the exception should be set for one contact’s calls or texts while the iPhone or notifications are silenced. If you want to decide who can reach you during a particular Focus—such as Work or Sleep—configure that Focus’s People settings instead. Open Settings > Focus, select the Focus, and adjust its allowed people. Apple also documents options for allowing calls from groups or repeated calls in Focus; the available controls are described in Apple’s Focus notification guidance and Focus setup guide.

Know which silencing control you’re using
Do Not Disturb is a Focus mode with its own options for silencing calls, alerts, and notifications. Silent mode is a separate, device-level sound control. Emergency Bypass is configured on the contact card; Focus allowances are configured for a particular Focus. Apple documents the same contact-card route in its current iPhone guide and its iOS 18 guide: Contacts, select a person, Edit, then Ringtone or Text Tone and Emergency Bypass. These references do not establish the oldest supported iOS version. If your software or language uses slightly different wording, look for the corresponding Ringtone or Text Tone control in that contact’s editor.
