For an HD-only TV, choose the Roku Streaming Stick (HD); for most 4K TVs, start with the Streaming Stick Plus (4K). Step up to the Streaming Stick 4K if Dolby Vision or its long-range Wi-Fi receiver matters to your setup. Choose Roku Ultra for Ethernet, USB, Dolby Atmos support, Wi-Fi 6, or its rechargeable backlit remote. If improving TV sound is part of the goal, Streambar SE combines streaming and audio in one device. These recommendations reflect Roku’s U.S. product guidance and specifications, not independent comparative testing.
Which Roku should you buy?
| Model | Best fit | What distinguishes it | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick (HD) | An HD-only TV and straightforward streaming | Up to 1080p, dual-band Wi-Fi, compact HDMI stick, and a Voice Remote that can control TV power and volume. | If your TV supports 4K and you want to watch 4K content, consider a 4K model instead. Roku identifies this 2025 stick as the updated comparable choice to Roku Express. |
| Roku Streaming Stick Plus (4K) | A simple 4K and HDR upgrade | 4K at up to 60 frames per second, HDR10+ and HLG, dual-band Wi-Fi, and USB-C power; model 3830R. | Roku’s specification lists do not include Dolby Vision for this model. |
| Roku Streaming Stick 4K | A 4K setup where Dolby Vision or Wi-Fi placement is important | 4K up to 60 frames per second; Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG; long-range Wi-Fi receiver; model 3820R2. | Check that your TV supports the HDR formats you want. The Wi-Fi feature is not a guarantee of a particular connection speed or range in your home. |
| Roku Ultra | A premium setup needing wired networking, extra ports, or an advanced remote | Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos support, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB, and a rechargeable, backlit Voice Remote Pro; model 4850R. | Dolby Atmos requires compatible audio equipment; 4K and HDR require compatible content and TV. |
| Roku Ultra LT | A lower-cost Ultra-family option, if currently available | Roku describes it as offering 4K, Dolby Vision, Ethernet, and an enhanced remote with wired Headphone Mode; Roku says it is sold only at Walmart. | It is not listed in Roku’s main U.S. comparison lineup. Confirm the current U.S. availability, generation, and price before buying. |
| Roku Streambar SE | Someone who wants streaming and a TV-audio upgrade in one device | Roku describes it as a 2-in-1 with 4K streaming and clearer TV audio. | Compare its specific audio specifications and physical setup with a separate player and soundbar; the comparison page’s description alone does not establish sound quality for your room. |

How to choose based on your TV
HD-only TV
The Streaming Stick (HD) is the direct match if the television is limited to HD and your priority is basic streaming. It supports up to 1080p. A 4K player will not make an HD-only TV display 4K.

4K TV
For a 4K television, the Streaming Stick Plus (4K) is the simpler fit if 4K, HDR10+ and HLG cover your needs. If Dolby Vision support is important, Roku’s listed choices are the Streaming Stick 4K and Ultra. A format matters only when the TV, player, and title support it.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
For 4K use, Roku specifies an HDMI input that supports HDCP 2.2. Roku also says the TV and content must be compatible to display 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision. An internet connection is required for streaming.
When are the more expensive features useful?
Long-range Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 6, and Ethernet
Roku positions the Streaming Stick 4K with a long-range Wi-Fi receiver and Ultra with Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet. These are different features, not independent evidence of how a player will perform in a particular home. If the player will sit far from the router or a wireless connection is unreliable, consider whether its placement and your network make a wired connection or a Wi-Fi feature useful. Ultra is the model in this lineup with Ethernet.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Audio and remote features
Ultra adds Dolby Atmos support and a rechargeable, backlit Voice Remote Pro. Atmos playback depends on compatible audio equipment. If the main problem is TV sound rather than streaming access, Streambar SE is Roku’s combined streaming-and-audio option; check its detailed specifications and setup requirements before treating it as a substitute for a separate sound system.

Ultra includes USB in addition to Ethernet. Choose it for these ports only if they address a real connection or setup need. If you will not use Ultra’s networking, audio, port, or remote features, a streaming stick may be the more suitable choice.

What happened to Roku Express?
Roku says its Streaming Stick (HD), introduced in 2025, is the updated comparable choice to Roku Express, which is no longer available for purchase. Roku likewise says Express 4K+ is no longer available and identifies Streaming Stick Plus (4K) as its updated comparable choice. Express devices should not be treated as current lineup models.

What to verify before you buy
- TV and content: Confirm the TV supports the resolution and HDR format you want, and that the HDMI input supports HDCP 2.2 for 4K. The content also has to be available in the relevant format.
- Audio setup: For Dolby Atmos, make sure your audio equipment is compatible.
- Network: Roku devices need an internet connection to stream. Consider whether your router location and available connection make a stick’s Wi-Fi or Ultra’s Ethernet relevant.
- Subscriptions: A Roku player is hardware, not an all-access subscription. Roku notes that some channel content may require paid subscriptions or other payments.
- Availability and price: Check the exact model, retailer, stock, and live price. Roku’s listed prices and discounts can change; Ultra LT availability should be verified separately.
