There is no confirmed Capcom checklist of games you need to finish before a Resident Evil crossover. Recent reporting describes a future convergence between the numbered games and the remakes, but names no specific release, date, format or required backstory. If you want a short optional catch-up route, start with the Resident Evil 2 remake, then consider Resident Evil 3 and Code: Veronica for more Raccoon City, Jill, Claire and Chris context.
What does “the next crossover” refer to?
A September 30, 2026 GamesRadar report attributes comments about the series’ future to executive producer Jun Takeuchi, in a Japanese magazine feature for Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary. As rendered in the report, Takeuchi describes two tracks: numbered games continue the series’ ongoing drama, while remakes revisit its past. The report says the remake line will eventually catch up to the numbered titles, with preparations underway since Resident Evil Village.

That points to an eventual convergence, not a named crossover game or a confirmed release plan. The report cites elements such as Umbrella and Spencer references and Raccoon City’s return in Resident Evil Requiem, but it does not establish the convergence’s format or date. It also cautions that translations vary; the comments are available here through GamesRadar’s English rendering, not a verified official English transcript.

Which games make a useful optional catch-up route?
| If you want… | Play… | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| One modern starting point | Resident Evil 2 remake | It offers a modernized version of a classic and introduces Leon and Claire in Raccoon City. PlayStation describes Resident Evil 4 as taking place after RE2 and identifies Leon as a Raccoon City survivor. PlayStation’s series guide recommends RE2 as a modern entry point. |
| More Raccoon City and Jill | Resident Evil 3 remake | It adds more of Jill’s story and the Raccoon City events. GamesRadar’s chronology places parts of RE3 around RE2; that is an editorial chronology, not an official play requirement. GamesRadar’s series order explains the suggested sequence. |
| Claire, Chris and remake-line history | Code: Veronica, or the announced remake when it arrives | GamesRadar places Code: Veronica after RE2 and describes it as bringing Claire and Chris together. Capcom has announced a remake titled Resident Evil Veronica for 2027, but has not called it crossover preparation. |
This is an optional route for added context, not an official order. If you only want one game, choose the RE2 remake. Add the others if their characters or the series’ remake history interest you.
Is Resident Evil Veronica confirmed, and is it required?
Capcom’s June 8, 2026 announcement confirms Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica (released in 2000), for 2027. Capcom lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It says the release date and further details will be announced later. The announcement does not say the remake is a prerequisite for a future crossover.

- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Do you need to play the whole series to follow it?
No. PlayStation says the games share connective narrative tissue but each tells a complete story in isolation. It also points to recaps, notes, diaries and dialogue as ways returning players can catch up. That makes earlier games useful for recognizing characters and references, rather than compulsory homework.

That is a total across the franchise, not sales in 2026 or a figure for any individual game. Capcom’s sales data provides the figure.

- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies.
