The best PVA glue depends on what you are bonding and how the finished project will be used. For paper, card, scrapbooks, school projects and modelling, start with a general-purpose craft PVA that explicitly lists those materials. For wood joints or projects exposed to damp conditions, choose by the product’s woodworking instructions and stated moisture resistance—not by the words “PVA” or “wood glue” alone.

What is the difference between PVA glue and “normal glue”?
“Normal glue” is not a precise adhesive category: it can refer to different products with different ingredients and intended uses. PVA glue refers to an adhesive formulation based on polyvinyl acetate; product formulations and performance still vary. Bostik describes its PVA Glue as water-borne and based on vinyl acetate homopolymer and polyvinyl alcohol, and lists crafts, paper, card, wood and fabric among its uses. Is PVA glue the same as school glue?
Some school glues are PVA-based, but “school glue” describes a use or product category rather than one uniform formulation. A craft PVA and a school glue may differ in tack, bonding claims, suitable materials and drying behavior. Check the label for the surfaces and project conditions you actually have rather than treating the names as interchangeable. Bostik’s FAQ

Initial tack and working time
Initial tack is how readily an adhesive holds materials in place soon after application; open time is the period available to position or adjust them. If a paper decoration, model or layered craft is difficult to keep aligned, compare products that state their initial-tack characteristics. Aleene’s describes its Original Tacky Glue as having higher initial tack than school glue, but that claim should not be read as a standardized result against every school glue. Full cure and dried appearance
Bostik’s 2022 technical sheet gives approximate full-cure guidance of 12 hours for paper or card and 24 hours for wood, and describes its glue as drying clear. These are figures and finish claims for that product; other PVA glues may have different instructions. Clamping, cleanup and moisture exposure
For woodworking, open time, clamping or cure time, dried color, cleanup and water resistance can differ between formulations. Check the particular product’s instructions rather than assuming one PVA’s behavior applies to another. Do not infer that a glue is water-resistant or waterproof from “PVA” or “wood glue” in its name; look for an explicit moisture-resistance statement suitable for the project. Woodcraft’s comparison

How to choose for your materials
- Identify the materials. Check that the label names the surfaces you are joining. Bostik, for example, lists paper, card, wood and fabric for its PVA Glue; that does not establish compatibility for other products. Bostik product information
- Decide what matters most. For crafts, that may be a clear finish or quick initial grab. For wood joints, compare open time, clamping or cure instructions and moisture resistance.

- Match resistance to the environment. If the bond may encounter damp conditions, select a product with a clearly stated resistance level appropriate to that exposure; do not treat “wood glue” as proof of water resistance. Woodcraft’s comparison
