The device was a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC), not a conventional LED strip or an OLED display. The work showed a way to manufacture lighting under ambient conditions; it did not establish that the sheets became a commercial product.
What “on a roll” means in this report
“On a roll” refers to roll-to-roll manufacturing: flexible material passes through coating equipment as successive functional layers are applied, much like a continuous printing process. Chemistry World reported the demonstration on 14 August 2012, describing work by researchers at Umeå University in Sweden and the Technical University of Denmark in Roskilde. Chemistry World’s report frames LECs as a possible alternative to OLEDs for large-scale lighting applications.

This is distinct from flexible LED tape sold for practical lighting. The 2012 device generated light in an electrochemical cell formed from coated layers; it was not a strip of conventional LED components on a circuit board.
How the researchers built the flexible sheet
The reported device used flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) foil as its substrate. A slot-die roll coater deposited a 14 nm zinc oxide nanoparticle layer onto indium tin oxide to form the cathode. The researchers then coated an active ink containing an organic solvent, a yellow light-emitting polymer and an electrolyte, followed by an anode ink.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Chemistry World reported a total device thickness of 150 µm, including the PET foil that provided mechanical stability, and an active light-emitting layer 1 µm thick. These are dimensions reported in the 2012 article, not measurements of a current retail product.
Why ambient-condition processing mattered
The process was solution-based and carried out under ambient conditions. That mattered because the report identifies sensitivity to oxygen and water as a fabrication challenge associated with OLED materials. The demonstration suggested that LEC layers could be coated without requiring the same kind of tightly controlled fabrication conditions described as a challenge for OLEDs.

Roll-to-roll coating also offers a potential route to efficient, large-area production. But the report presents low-cost, large-scale manufacture as a possibility, not a proven cost or manufacturing outcome. It gives no quantified cost, brightness, efficiency, lifetime or production-yield figures.

The article suggested wallpaper, packaging, clothing, signage and e-paper as possible settings for thin, flexible light-emitting sheets. These were proposed applications, not products shown to be commercially available. Andreas Sandström of Umeå University described easy, inexpensive fabrication as a central goal and said roll-to-roll production would represent success toward it.

How this differs from flexible LED tape today
Flexible LED tape is a separate, current product category. For example, LEDYi describes its COB strips as LED chips encapsulated on a flexible printed circuit board, producing continuous or “dotless” illumination, with variants such as tunable white, RGB, RGBW and waterproof models. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results. LEDYi’s COB LED strip technical page also says its strips can be cut only at marked intervals and notes that an aluminum profile can help dissipate heat; buyers should check the specifications for the specific model and installation.
Tresco Lighting’s press-release index lists flexible tape-light launches in 2025 and 2026, evidence that tape lighting remains a current product category—not evidence that the LEC sheet described in 2012 reached the market. Tresco Lighting’s press-release index does not establish commercial availability of the reported LEC technology.
