Which Proxmox Sensors and Controls Should You Enable in Home Assistant?

Enable CPU, memory, disk, backup, and VM/LXC status first in Home Assistant’s Proxmox integration. Add network and uptime selectively, and expose controls only with least-privilege permissions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Home Assistant installations, begin with the built-in Proxmox VE integration and enable CPU, memory, disk, backup, and VM/LXC status entities. Add backup time and duration when recovery awareness matters. Network counters and uptime are useful when you have a specific dashboard, capacity, or troubleshooting purpose, but they do not need to be enabled on every guest.

Controls deserve more caution. Turn on only the actions you will actually use, and give Home Assistant a dedicated Proxmox account with the narrowest permissions that support those actions. Monitoring normally needs an auditor-style role; starting, stopping, rebooting, snapshotting, or changing a node requires additional privileges.

What the built-in integration provides

Home Assistant’s official Proxmox VE integration can expose entities for Proxmox nodes and their virtual machines (VMs) and Linux containers (LXCs). It also offers action buttons, but entities and buttons can be disabled until you explicitly enable them on the relevant device page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need at least one Proxmox node with at least one VM or container. Add the integration from Settings → Devices & services → Add Integration → Proxmox VE. After the connection succeeds, open the discovered Proxmox device, review the disabled entities, and enable only those that match a dashboard, alert, or automation you intend to maintain.

Pick sensors by the question you need to answer

Every enabled entity adds state data to Home Assistant. A small, deliberate set keeps dashboards readable and reduces alert noise. The table below maps each documented sensor family to a practical outcome.

Sensor family What it tells you Enable it when
CPU usage Current processor utilization for a node or guest You need a quick resource view or want to investigate compute contention
Memory usage How much assigned or available memory is being used You are watching capacity, leaks, or guest pressure
Disk usage Storage consumption reported by the integration You need early warning of a filling node or guest disk
Last backup time When the most recent backup completed or was recorded You need to know whether protection is recent
Backup duration How long the latest backup took You want to spot unusually long jobs or changing backup windows
Node backup-status binary sensor Whether the last node backup status is on or off according to Proxmox You want a simple status tile or an automation based on the latest result
VM/LXC status binary sensor On while the guest is running and off for other states You need availability monitoring for a service guest
Network input/output counters Traffic counters accumulated since that VM or LXC started You are diagnosing traffic, capacity, or a network-dependent service
Uptime How long a node or guest has been running You need restart history or operational context

CPU and memory: the useful baseline

CPU and memory are the best starting point for a general health dashboard because they answer whether a node or guest is under pressure without requiring a particular incident. Show them for infrastructure guests that host important services, not necessarily for every disposable test machine.

Use the pair together when investigating sluggishness. High CPU with ordinary memory use suggests compute demand; rising memory use without a corresponding workload change points toward an application or guest that needs investigation. Home Assistant can display the values, but the integration does not diagnose the process causing the load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disk: capacity awareness rather than performance testing

Enable disk entities when a full filesystem could stop updates, databases, or backups. A capacity tile is especially valuable for the Proxmox node that stores guest disks and backup data. Keep in mind that the documented integration’s disk sensor is a usage reading; it is not a disk-health or SMART diagnosis.

For capacity alerts, choose a condition appropriate to the filesystem’s role and leave enough room for the workloads that write there. Do not interpret a normal usage value as proof that a physical drive is healthy.

Backup time, duration, and status

Backup entities answer three different questions. The last-backup time shows recency, duration shows how long the job took, and the node backup-status binary sensor summarizes the latest backup status. Enabling all three gives a more useful picture than a single “backup okay” tile.

The status sensor describes the last backup result; it does not prove that the schedule covers every guest, that retention is appropriate, or that a restore has been tested. Keep a separate operational check for backup scope and recovery procedures. A sudden increase in duration is a reason to inspect Proxmox task logs, storage performance, and the amount of changed data rather than to assume the backup is invalid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VM and LXC status: availability monitoring

The VM/LXC status binary sensor is the clearest choice for service availability. Home Assistant reports it as on when the guest is running and off for other states. Use it for guests that should normally be present, such as a home-automation dependency, DNS service, or media server.

Do not treat an off state as proof of failure if you intentionally power down the guest on a schedule. Exclude maintenance windows or use a condition in your automation so a planned shutdown does not create an incident.

Network counters: useful with a defined diagnostic goal

Network input and output counters measure traffic since the VM or LXC started. They are useful for identifying a guest that suddenly moves much more data, checking whether a service is active, or explaining bandwidth use during an incident.

Because the counters reset when the guest restarts, they are not a substitute for a long-term accounting system. Display them alongside uptime if you need to understand whether a low total reflects light traffic or a recent reboot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uptime: context, not a reliability score

Uptime helps correlate restarts with service interruptions and maintenance. It is most useful on a troubleshooting view or for guests where unexpected reboots matter. Long uptime alone is not evidence that software is healthy, and a short uptime may simply reflect a planned update.

How to enable entities safely

  1. Open Settings → Devices & services in Home Assistant.
  2. Select the Proxmox VE integration and open the device representing the node or guest you want to monitor.
  3. Review entities marked disabled. Enable the CPU, memory, disk, backup, status, network, or uptime entities that correspond to a stated monitoring goal.
  4. Rename entities or assign them to areas if that makes dashboards and automations easier to maintain.
  5. Add the enabled entities to a dashboard, alert, or automation immediately. If an entity has no owner or use, leave it disabled.

Repeat the review for other nodes, VMs, and containers. A node-level sensor and a guest-level sensor answer different questions, so avoid assuming that one replaces the other.

Which controls should you expose?

Buttons are optional and permission-gated. Enable only actions you can explain to another administrator and protect with an automation condition or a deliberate dashboard workflow. Home Assistant documents guest actions for starting, stopping, restarting, rebooting, shutting down, snapshotting, hibernating, and resetting, as well as node-level actions.

Control group Operational meaning Use it when
Start Requests that a stopped guest run You intentionally manage guest availability from Home Assistant
Stop Stops a running guest immediately You accept an abrupt stop for a controlled emergency or disposable workload
Restart Stops a running system immediately as part of the restart action You need a forceful recovery action and understand the interruption
Reboot Attempts a graceful guest reboot, using the guest agent when installed You want the guest operating system to perform an orderly reboot
Shutdown Attempts a graceful guest shutdown, using the guest agent when installed You want an orderly power-off rather than an immediate stop
Snapshot Creates a guest snapshot, subject to Proxmox storage and permissions You have a defined rollback point and a cleanup policy
Hibernate Requests guest hibernation where the guest and Proxmox support it You have tested resume behavior for that specific guest
Reset Performs a reset comparable to pressing a virtual reset button You need last-resort recovery for an unresponsive guest
Node-level actions Operates on the Proxmox node rather than one guest You have a tightly controlled maintenance procedure and authorization

Immediate versus graceful actions

The distinction between similarly named buttons matters. Home Assistant’s documentation states that Restart and Stop/Stop all stop a running system immediately. Treat those actions like power interruption: applications may not flush data, and services can require recovery on the next boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reboot and Shutdown attempt graceful behavior. When the QEMU guest agent is installed and available, Proxmox can use it to ask the guest operating system to perform the orderly operation. Without a functioning agent, the result depends on the guest and Proxmox configuration, so test the behavior before placing the button on a prominent dashboard.

Use conditions before automations

A button that works manually can still be unsafe in an automation. Require an explicit maintenance mode, a time window, or confirmation state before sending a stop, restart, reset, or node action. Keep destructive controls off a wall-mounted dashboard used by visitors or children. For recovery, prefer a graceful action first and reserve immediate actions for a documented failure path.

Permissions and authentication

Create a dedicated Proxmox identity

Use a separate Proxmox VE user for Home Assistant rather than the root account. This limits the damage if the credential is exposed and makes audit records easier to interpret. Assign access only to the nodes, VMs, containers, and storage objects that Home Assistant needs to see or control.

For monitor-only dashboards, Home Assistant identifies PVEAuditor as typically sufficient for sensors and binary sensors. If you enable basic guest actions as well as monitoring, PVEVMUser is an example of a role that can provide those capabilities. Verify the exact action permissions in your Proxmox version and consider a custom role when the example role grants more access than required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match permissions to the controls

Starting, stopping, rebooting, shutting down, snapshotting, hibernating, resetting, and node-level operations do not all require the same privilege. Grant only the permissions for the buttons you enabled, and assign them only on the resources those buttons should affect. A user allowed to monitor one guest should not automatically be able to operate every guest in the cluster.

Consider an API token

An API token gives Home Assistant a separate, revocable credential. Proxmox supports privilege separation for tokens: when privilege separation is enabled, the token receives its own explicitly assigned permissions; when it is disabled, the token inherits the user’s permissions.

Store the token secret immediately when you create it. Proxmox displays the secret only once, so losing it means creating a replacement token. Treat the token like a password, keep it out of dashboards and backups that are not protected, and revoke it if the Home Assistant installation is retired or compromised.

When the custom integration is justified

The maintainer’s custom Proxmox integration replaces the built-in integration when installed. It is an advanced option, not a prerequisite for normal monitoring. Its documentation describes broader cluster and storage entities, additional node and guest readings, discovery, and more actions. It can select specific nodes, VMs, containers, and storage targets.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also offers optional physical-disk SMART monitoring. Reading SMART data can wake sleeping disks, so enabling it may change the power behavior of a storage system. Hardware temperatures, fan readings, and voltages are described as using PVE-mods. Those features add another dependency and require their own permission, update, and compatibility review.

Choose the custom integration only when a documented capability solves a real gap in the built-in integration. Record which entities and actions you depend on, review updates before applying them, and avoid installing both integrations expecting them to operate independently; the custom integration replaces the built-in one.

A practical enablement plan

For a quick health overview

Enable CPU, memory, disk, and VM/LXC status for the node and the guests that matter. This gives you resource use, capacity, and availability without filling the dashboard with counters that lack an immediate action.

For backup awareness

Add last-backup time, backup duration, and the node backup-status binary sensor. Pair the entities with an inspection routine that verifies schedules, guest coverage, retention, and restore procedures outside Home Assistant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For availability alerting

Use VM/LXC status for guests expected to run continuously. Build maintenance exceptions before notifying people, because the documented “off” state includes intentional shutdowns and other non-running states.

For capacity troubleshooting

Add disk and memory first, then network input/output counters when traffic is relevant. Interpret network totals in light of guest uptime because the counters begin again after a guest restart.

For remote operations

Start with no controls. Add one tested action at a time, confirm its Proxmox permission, and document whether it is graceful or immediate. Keep reset, stop, and node-level actions behind a deliberate maintenance workflow.

Common mistakes and recovery steps

  • No entities appear: confirm that the Proxmox connection includes at least one node with at least one VM or container, then revisit the device page for disabled entities.
  • A sensor is missing: check whether it is disabled by default and whether the account can read the corresponding resource.
  • A control is unavailable: review the dedicated user’s permission on that specific node or guest; monitoring access alone does not grant action privileges.
  • Reboot or shutdown is not graceful: verify guest-agent installation and operation, then test the action manually before automating it.
  • A backup tile looks healthy but restores fail: remember that the status sensor covers the latest reported backup status, not restore testing or policy completeness.
  • Network totals seem unexpectedly low: check the guest’s uptime because the counters are measured since that VM or LXC started.
  • SMART polling wakes disks: disable optional physical-disk monitoring or adjust the design if sleeping-disk behavior is important.

Recommended default

Use the built-in integration with a least-privilege account. Enable CPU, memory, disk, backup recency and duration, and VM/LXC status for the systems you actually operate. Add network counters and uptime only where they support a named diagnostic or dashboard need. Leave controls disabled until you have tested the action, assigned the minimum Proxmox permission, and decided how to prevent accidental use. Move to the custom integration only for its additional cluster, storage, hardware, SMART, or action capabilities—and accept the extra maintenance that comes with them.
