The safest first-day setup for a new Windows gaming laptop is straightforward: complete Windows setup on a trusted network, run Windows Update until it is clear, restart, then check the laptop maker’s support page for model-specific drivers and firmware. Test the hardware before changing graphics packages or BIOS settings. Optional drivers, generic GPU packages and BIOS updates are choices that depend on your exact model, not automatic requirements.
What to do first—and what can wait
A gaming laptop does not need every item listed on its support page before you can use it. Start with the operating system’s own update mechanism, verify that essential hardware works, and only then investigate model-specific packages. This order gives you a known baseline and makes it easier to identify which change caused a problem.

The instructions below apply broadly to Windows 11 and, where still relevant, Windows 10. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a new laptop should normally be running a supported Windows 11 release. Initial setup screens vary with the Windows edition, build and laptop model; follow the prompts shown on your device rather than trying to reproduce a particular screen sequence.
| Stage | Do this | Why it belongs here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Finish Windows setup and connect to a trusted Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. | Updates and activation checks require a reliable connection. |
| 2 | Run Windows Update, including required restarts. | Recommended Windows drivers and system fixes arrive through the supported channel. |
| 3 | Check Optional updates and install only items you understand. | Optional drivers are reviewed and selected manually; they are not installed automatically. |
| 4 | Use the laptop maker’s official support page or supported utility. | Model-specific drivers, firmware and utilities may be different from generic packages. |
| 5 | Inspect Device Manager and test hardware. | You can catch a missing driver or a faulty function before gaming. |
| 6 | Decide on graphics and BIOS updates using the exact model instructions. | These updates can improve compatibility but are not universal first-boot chores. |
1. Complete initial Windows setup safely
Use a trusted connection
Connect through your home network or another connection you control. Avoid beginning driver and firmware work on an unknown public network. If Wi-Fi is unavailable because its driver is missing, use Ethernet or the laptop maker’s documented offline setup option, then install the network driver from an official source.

Record the laptop’s identity
Before downloading anything, write down the exact model name, product number and serial number shown on the chassis, packaging or firmware information page. A family name such as “15-inch gaming laptop” is not precise enough: the same chassis can ship with different processors, graphics chips and wireless adapters. The model or serial number is what lets a support site offer the correct files.
Let setup finish before optimizing
Complete account, region, keyboard, privacy and recovery prompts shown by Windows. Keep the charger connected during setup and all firmware work. Do not interrupt a restart simply because the screen is blank for a few minutes; a new installation may perform several configuration passes.
2. Run Windows Update completely
Open the update page
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update in the left column. In Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow downloads and installation to finish.
- When Windows offers Restart now, restart. If no restart is requested, restart after the installation pass anyway.
- Return to the same page and check again. Repeat until no further required updates are offered.
Windows Update can install recommended drivers automatically in Windows 11. A new laptop may need multiple passes because one update enables another. Keep the machine on AC power and do not run a demanding game while updates are installing.
Review optional drivers deliberately
Windows 11 lists optional drivers at Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Expand the driver section and read each device name, provider and version. These entries are not installed automatically. Install one category at a time when you have a reason—such as a device that is not working or a documented compatibility fix—then restart and test before selecting another.
Do not treat the presence of an optional driver as proof that it is newer, faster or necessary for gaming. If the laptop is working and the manufacturer supplies a validated package for the same device, compare the two sources before replacing it.

3. Check the manufacturer’s official support route
Search by model or serial number
Open the laptop maker’s official support site and enter the exact model or serial number. Select the page for your installed Windows version and processor/graphics configuration. Download only files that match the device. Manufacturer pages commonly separate chipset, network, audio, touchpad, graphics, firmware and utility packages; the labels and available files differ by model.
Use a supported update utility when available
Some makers provide a first-party utility that detects the model and offers updates. ASUS, for example, documents MyASUS System Update for supported devices and directs owners to its support site when that feature is unavailable. Support for the utility is model-dependent, so an absent menu does not mean the laptop is defective and does not justify installing a third-party updater.
Choose packages by symptom or documentation
- Install a chipset or platform package when the manufacturer lists it for your model or a device is unidentified.
- Install network or audio packages when the corresponding function fails or the support page identifies a required version.
- Install a control-center or hotkey utility only when you need the laptop’s documented fan, keyboard, performance or display controls.
- Keep a record of the package name and version before installing it. That record makes rollback easier.
Microsoft’s driver guidance is to obtain manual drivers from the device manufacturer’s official site and avoid unofficial driver-download sites. A site that bundles files, promises one-click updates for every device or hides the original publisher is not an appropriate source for a new laptop.
4. Inspect Device Manager and test the basics
Look for missing or failed devices
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Keyboards, Mice and other pointing devices and System devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon, an Unknown device entry or a device that disappears when you select View > Show hidden devices.
- Open a suspect device’s Properties and read the Device status message. Use Driver to see the provider, date and version.
A warning icon identifies a problem to investigate; it does not tell you to download a random “driver fixer.” Use Windows Update first, then the device manufacturer’s official support page. If you cannot identify an unknown device, its Details tab can show a hardware ID that you can match against the laptop maker’s documentation.
Run a practical hardware check
This is a sensible owner’s check, not a standardized Microsoft certification test. Confirm that the following work before you install games:

Many gaming laptops contain integrated graphics in the processor plus a discrete GPU. Windows can use both, and the laptop maker may customize power switching, display routing, hotkeys and sleep behavior. Consequently, the best graphics package depends on the exact laptop rather than only the GPU brand.
OEM package versus generic reference package
| Decision factor | Laptop-maker (OEM) package | Generic Intel/AMD reference package |
|---|---|---|
| Model validation | Validated by the laptop maker for its notebook hardware and power/display configuration, according to MSI’s notebook guidance. | Designed for the chip family; compatibility with every notebook implementation is not guaranteed. |
| Release cadence | May arrive less frequently because it follows the maker’s validation process. | May provide newer feature or game fixes more quickly. |
| Compatibility risk | Usually the safer starting point for the shipped configuration. | Can work well, but a notebook-specific function may be missing or unstable. |
| Recovery | Often easiest to restore through the model’s support page if a change fails. | Keep the previous package or installer so you can return to a known-good version. |
The table reflects MSI’s published guidance for MSI notebooks; it is not a universal rule for every manufacturer. MSI notes that Windows Update can replace generic Intel or AMD reference graphics packages with MSI’s OEM package, which it describes as validated for its notebook hardware. Reference packages may be released more often, but MSI does not guarantee them for all of its notebook models.
A sensible graphics sequence
- Allow Windows Update to install its recommended driver.
- Check the laptop maker’s model page for its current graphics package and release notes.
- If the OEM package is required for a laptop feature, use it first.
- Consider a reference package only when its release notes address a problem you have, the package supports your exact hardware and you have a recovery plan.
- Restart and test display brightness, refresh rate, sleep/wake, external monitors, GPU switching and one or two games.
Do not install separate packages for every graphics adapter merely because multiple entries appear in Device Manager. Identify which adapter drives the internal panel and follow the laptop maker’s instructions for the pair.

Check before flashing
- Open the manufacturer’s exact model page and read the BIOS or firmware release notes.
- Compare the installed BIOS version with the offered version. In Windows, press Win + R, enter
msinfo32, and read BIOS Version/Date. - Look for stated prerequisites, such as an intermediate version, minimum battery level, AC power or a particular Windows edition.
- Back up important files. A BIOS update does not normally erase personal data, but a failed update or reset can create a recovery situation.
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals and do not close the lid, press power or remove AC power during the update.
Follow only the maker’s procedure
Manufacturers provide different flash methods: a Windows utility, a firmware menu or a file copied to removable storage. Use the method and file intended for your model. Do not substitute a BIOS image from a similar-looking model, and do not interrupt the restart sequence. If the vendor documents a recovery procedure, save it before beginning.
7. What to do when an update causes trouble
Isolate the change
Write down what changed immediately before the symptom: Windows Update, an optional driver, a graphics package or a utility. Stop installing additional updates while you test. A single controlled rollback is more informative than layering several versions on top of one another.
Roll back a recent driver
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the affected category and double-click the device.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Choose a reason, confirm and restart.
Microsoft documents reinstalling the previous driver as a common response when a problem begins after Windows Update. If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, download the previous model-specific package from the manufacturer’s official support page, uninstalling only when that page’s instructions require it. Avoid removing a working network driver unless you already have an offline copy of the replacement.
Use symptoms to choose the next branch
| Symptom | First checks | Likely next action |
|---|---|---|
| No Wi-Fi | Airplane mode, adapter status in Device Manager, another network | Install the model’s official wireless driver using Ethernet or another computer if necessary. |
| No sound | Output device and mute state in Settings > System > Sound; audio device status | Use Windows Update, then the laptop maker’s audio package. |
| Black screen after graphics change | External display, Safe Mode availability and recent driver history | Roll back the display driver before trying another graphics package. |
| Unknown device | Hardware ID in Device Manager and model support page | Match the ID to the official chipset, card-reader, hotkey or sensor driver. |
| Charging or sleep problem after firmware change | AC connection, BIOS version and release notes | Stop further changes and follow the maker’s firmware recovery or support procedure. |
8. A clean first-day checklist
- Record the exact model, serial number and installed Windows version.
- Connect to a trusted network and keep the charger attached.
- Run Windows Update, restart, and check again until required updates are complete.
- Review Optional updates rather than installing every listed driver automatically.
- Check the manufacturer’s official support page or supported update utility.
- Inspect Device Manager for warning icons and unknown devices.
- Test Wi-Fi, audio, microphone, keyboard, touchpad, display refresh options, charging and external ports.
- Use the laptop maker’s graphics package when its documentation requires model validation; treat generic packages as a deliberate choice.
- Install BIOS or firmware only when the exact model’s release notes and instructions justify it.
- Keep previous installers or rollback information before experimenting with a new driver.
When setup is complete
You are ready to install games when Windows reports no required updates, essential devices work without warnings, and the laptop passes the basic function check. At that point, create a restore or recovery plan appropriate to your Windows edition and keep the model’s support page bookmarked. Future driver and firmware changes should be tied to a documented fix, a game requirement or a real symptom—not to the assumption that every newer file is automatically better.
