For the lowest gaming delay, enable the projector’s Game, Fast, Low Latency, or equivalent mode; send a resolution and refresh rate the specific projector supports; and disable image processing that is not needed. If the model supports 1080p at 240Hz, that can be a useful competitive setting, but “240Hz” alone does not guarantee 240 rendered frames per second or low end-to-end latency. Confirm the incoming signal in the projector’s information display and check the manual for restrictions on resolution, HDMI port, and picture mode.
Which settings should you change first?
- Use the correct HDMI input. Consult the projector manual for port-specific gaming modes and timings. For example, the Optoma UHZ55 manual ties its Enhanced Gaming mode to HDMI 1; its 4ms 1080p/240Hz figure requires a suitable gaming PC and video card. Optoma UHZ55 user manual.
- Enable the low-latency picture mode. Look for Game, Fast, Low Latency, Enhanced Gaming, or a similar manufacturer label. Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), when available, can switch modes when a gaming source is detected, but it is not proof that the projector is using its lowest-lag path. A BenQ manual says ALLM requires an HDMI source and Game or HDR-Game picture mode, and is disabled by default. BenQ projector manuals.
- Set a supported source timing. On a PC or console, choose a resolution and refresh rate listed for the projector and HDMI input. For competitive PC gaming, try 1080p at 240Hz if the model supports it. Then open the projector’s signal or information display and verify the timing it actually receives. RTINGS advises matching the source to what the projector supports and notes that 1080p at 120Hz or the projector’s highest supported 1080p refresh can be a smooth-feeling option. RTINGS projector input-lag guide.
- Disable unnecessary processing. Turn off keystone or auto-keystone, warping, geometric correction, noise reduction, and frame interpolation when responsiveness is the priority. These features can add processing, and some low-latency modes disable geometry controls automatically. If you need to correct the image, physically reposition or align the projector where practical.
- Check the picture and controls in-game. If the image is soft, the motion looks unnatural, or the projector is not receiving the expected timing, recheck the source output and mode restrictions. Test any geometry changes carefully: some modes reset keystone or make geometry adjustments unavailable.
What a 240Hz projector signal does—and does not—mean
240Hz describes a supported refresh timing. It does not mean every game renders 240 frames per second, every resolution works at that rate, or the entire system has zero delay. The result depends on the source device, game frame rate, HDMI input, projector processing mode, and timing that reaches the projector. RTINGS also identifies scaling, refresh conversion, tone mapping, dynamic contrast, noise reduction, interpolation, geometry corrections, and pixel-shift processing as possible contributors to projector latency. Some projectors that accept 4K/120Hz may downscale the signal, so check what the model actually displays and how the mode is processed. RTINGS projector input-lag guide.

Manufacturer specifications illustrate why the timing matters. Optoma’s UHZ55 manual lists 4ms at 1080p/240Hz and 16.9ms at 4K/60Hz with Enhanced Gaming enabled; the manual says the 4ms result requires HDMI 1 and a suitable gaming PC, and that values may vary slightly. Optoma’s UHZ55 product page lists 4ms at 1080p/240Hz and 16.7ms at 4K/60Hz, while its UHD35x page states 4.2ms at 1080p/240Hz. These are manufacturer-published, model-specific figures, not universal projector benchmarks. UHZ55 manual; UHZ55 product page; UHD35x product page.
Should you turn off motion interpolation for gaming?
Usually, yes, if responsiveness matters more than smoother-looking motion. Interpolation processes or creates frames for supported viewing modes, which conflicts with minimizing interactive delay. JVC’s guide says Clear Motion Drive cannot be selected while Low Latency is on and warns that interpolation can distort some scenes. JVC recommends Low Latency for content requiring short latency, such as games, while noting that delay does not become zero. JVC projector guide.

- Superior Gaming Responsiveness: Achieve ultimate precision on the big screen with a magnificent 240Hz refresh rate and an ultra-low 4.2ms input lag; perfect for competitive gaming where every millisecond counts
- Vibrant Colors and HDR Support: Experience enhanced visual depth and a wide color gamut with HDR/HLG compatibility and SuperColor technology; bringing cinematic realism to your favorite movies and modern games
- Massive Screen Projection: Enjoy an expansive viewing area with screen sizes up to 150 inches; displaying a detailed 100-inch image from 10.9 feet away to create a focal point in any home entertainment space
- Easy Setup and Image Adjustment: Achieve a perfectly squared image instantly with auto-keystone, four-corner adjustment, and 1.1x optical zoom; plus curved screen projection for advanced theater configurations
For gaming, prioritize a supported high-refresh signal and the projector’s low-latency path. Treat interpolation as an optional viewing feature only if the projector permits it in the chosen mode and the resulting delay is acceptable. Refresh rate is only one part of perceived motion clarity: rendered frame rate, conversion or scaling, and image artifacts also matter. A stable 1080p/240Hz signal may feel clearer and more responsive than a nominally sharper mode that adds processing, but the outcome varies by projector and source.

Menu names and restrictions vary by model and firmware. For example, Optoma describes the UHD35x as supporting 1080p/240Hz PC gaming and warns that some settings are disabled in Enhanced Gaming mode. Treat that as a specification for that model, not a promise that another projector behaves the same way. Optoma UHD35x product page.
