Before using AI on a Pixel or iPhone, review the controls for the specific AI service you plan to use. On Android, check Gemini Apps Activity, connected apps, and Android permissions. On iPhone, review Apple Intelligence processing, the ChatGPT extension, Siri improvement analytics, and Screen Time restrictions. These controls are separate: changing one does not automatically govern every AI feature on the phone.
Settings, device support, language availability, and rollout status can change with operating-system and app updates. The paths below reflect the current Google and Apple documentation available in 2026; confirm the labels on your installed OS and in your region.

What to check first
Make a short inventory before changing anything:
- Which assistant or AI app will receive your prompts?
- Which apps contain information you do not want used for personalization, such as contacts, photos, mail, documents, or calendars?
- Does the feature need your microphone, camera, precise location, notifications, or attached files?
- Are you signed in to a third-party AI account?
- Is the phone managed by an employer, school, or family organizer?
Google’s Gemini controls govern Gemini Apps and related account activity. They are not documented as a master switch for every Pixel feature, including on-device components such as Gemini Nano or AICore. Apple separates Apple Intelligence’s processing architecture from user-facing controls for ChatGPT, analytics, and restrictions.

Privacy settings to review on a Google Pixel
1. Check Gemini Apps Activity and Keep Activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity from your Google Account or through the activity controls shown in Gemini. Review whether Keep Activity is on, inspect saved conversations, and choose an auto-delete period if you want automatic cleanup. Google’s documented choices are 3, 18, or 36 months; the cited instructions identify 18 months as the default for that activity setting.

You can review and delete Gemini activity. Turning Keep Activity off does not mean Gemini stops processing prompts: Google says prompts may still be processed to provide responses and for safety purposes. Treat the switch as a history and retention control, not as a complete opt-out from service processing.
2. Disconnect unnecessary Connected Apps
In Gemini, open the connected-apps or Personal Intelligence controls and examine every source that is enabled. Depending on eligibility and rollout, Google lists connections such as Contacts, Google Photos, Google Workspace, Search services, and YouTube.
Disconnect a service when Gemini does not need it to answer personalized questions. For example, a general writing request does not require access to contacts or a photo library. Removing a connection stops that source from being available for future personalization; it does not delete Gemini Apps Activity that was already created, and deleting information in the source app does not erase Gemini’s existing activity.

3. Check location at both Gemini and Android service level
Review Gemini’s mobile permissions and your phone’s location controls. Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Maps or Android Auto, even when a related setting in the Google app is off. If a prompt could reveal where you are, check the permission granted to the service supplying that location as well as Gemini’s own permission.

4. Reduce permissions Gemini does not need
Use Android’s app-permission screen for Gemini and set each capability deliberately:
- Microphone: allow only if you use voice prompts or Gemini Live. Choose a one-time or while-in-use option when offered.
- Camera: deny unless you use visual questions or camera-based features.
- Location: deny or limit precision unless location-aware answers are essential.
- Notifications: disable if previews could expose prompts or responses on the lock screen.
Permission names and exact menus vary by Android version and Pixel model. Recheck them after a major system update or after Gemini gains a new feature.

5. Know what these Pixel controls do not establish
The documented Gemini instructions do not establish a single user switch for all Pixel on-device AI processing. They do not, by themselves, prove how every Gemini Nano or AICore feature handles data. Keep Gemini account controls separate from any Pixel-specific controls that Google may document for your exact model and software build. If a feature runs in another system component, changing Gemini Apps Activity may not change that component’s behavior.
Privacy settings to review on an iPhone
1. Decide whether to enable the ChatGPT extension
Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. Turn off Use ChatGPT if you do not want Siri and supported Apple Intelligence features to send requests to ChatGPT. If you keep it enabled, leave Confirm ChatGPT Requests on when you want Siri to ask before sending a request automatically. Apple states that it always asks before photos or files are sent.
When the extension is used, the request and any attachment you select are sent to ChatGPT along with limited context, which can include your time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature being used. Apple says the IP address is obscured; general location can still be supplied for fraud prevention and legal compliance.

Using the extension without signing in is a different data relationship from using it with a ChatGPT account. Apple says that, without an account, OpenAI must not use the request and limited contextual information to train models. If you sign in, your ChatGPT account settings and OpenAI’s privacy policies apply. Choose the mode that matches your organization’s or household’s requirements, and do not attach confidential files merely because Siri offers the option.
2. Review Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and review Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence. Apple describes this as an opt-in collection setting for improving Siri, Dictation, Translate, and Apple foundation models. If enabled, interaction data may be retained for up to two years, while a small subset selected for review may remain longer.
This setting is separate from the ChatGPT extension. Turning off ChatGPT does not automatically turn off Apple’s improvement program, and turning off improvement analytics does not necessarily remove the ChatGPT extension. Make both choices independently.
Apple’s privacy notice says that request history covered by the opt-in program is not used to build a marketing profile and is never sold. That statement applies to the described Siri and Dictation request-history program; it is not a promise that every third-party extension follows Apple’s policies.
3. Understand on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says Apple Intelligence first analyzes whether a request can be processed on the device. More complex requests may be sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute environment. Therefore, the processing design is not a setting that guarantees every request remains on the iPhone.

Use the Apple Intelligence Report to see requests that were processed off-device, including supported requests involving the ChatGPT extension. The report provides visibility after processing; it does not turn cloud processing off. For sensitive work, avoid sending information that your policy requires to remain local, even when Apple Intelligence normally attempts on-device handling.
4. Apply a broad restriction with Screen Time
For a child’s phone, a managed device, or a temporary lockdown, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri. Use the available controls to disallow selected Apple Intelligence features or Intelligence Extensions. This is broader than changing an individual assistant preference and is useful when another person must not enable an extension later.
5. Verify eligibility before troubleshooting
Apple Intelligence is limited to supported iPhone models, languages, and regions. The ChatGPT extension is available only where ChatGPT itself is available. The cited instructions are for an iOS 26 guide, so the exact labels and feature list may differ on another release. If a menu is missing, update the phone where appropriate and check Apple’s current support information for your model, language, and region before assuming a privacy control has failed.

These settings are not equivalent switches. They address different services, data sources, and processing paths.

A practical privacy checklist before your first prompt
- Identify the AI service that will receive the prompt: Gemini, Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT, or another app.
- Remove connected apps and permissions that are not necessary for the feature you intend to use.
- Decide whether activity history should be kept and select the shortest retention option that meets your needs.
- Disable voice, camera, precise location, or notification access when you will not use those capabilities.
- Keep Siri’s ChatGPT confirmation prompt enabled if you want a human check before requests are sent.
- Do not attach confidential files or connect confidential repositories unless your privacy policy explicitly permits that handling.
- On a managed or family device, use Screen Time restrictions to prevent a user from re-enabling extensions.
- After an OS or app update, revisit the menus because labels, supported features, and regional availability can change.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming one switch covers the whole phone
Gemini Apps Activity, Android permissions, Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT, and analytics are separate controls. Change the setting belonging to the service that actually receives the data.

Confusing deletion with disconnection
Disconnecting a Google app prevents a current connection but does not itself erase previously created Gemini activity. Use the activity-management tools when you need to review or delete that history.
Assuming “on device” means “never off device”
Apple’s architecture attempts on-device processing, but complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute and optional extensions. Check the Apple Intelligence Report and keep sensitive information out of prompts that must remain local.
Ignoring the account state
A signed-in ChatGPT account brings that account’s settings and OpenAI privacy policies into the transaction. An unsigned request follows the handling Apple describes for the extension without an account. Decide deliberately rather than treating sign-in as a cosmetic choice.
Bottom line
On a Pixel, start with Gemini Apps Activity, Connected Apps, Android permissions, and the Google service supplying location; do not assume those settings control every on-device Pixel AI component. On an iPhone, decide separately about ChatGPT, keep Siri confirmation on if you want approval prompts, review Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence under Analytics & Improvements, and use Screen Time restrictions for a broader block. Recheck all paths after updates because availability and labels vary by device, account, language, region, and rollout.
