What Alexa privacy controls actually cover
Alexa’s controls are not one master privacy switch. They govern different stages of the process: whether the tablet listens for a wake word, what Alexa activity remains in your account, whether recordings can be used to improve services, and whether Fire OS reports your use of unrelated third-party apps.

Amazon says Fire tablets use on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. After the tablet detects it, audio is streamed to Amazon’s cloud, including a fraction of a second recorded immediately before the wake word. Amazon says a blue light bar appears while Alexa is recording and sending a request. Its Fire tablet help describes the indicator this way: “You’ll always know when Alexa is recording and sending your request to Amazon’s secure cloud because a blue light bar appears on your tablet.” Read Amazon’s full explanation in Learn About Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet.

Some Fire tablets may not detect the wake word when the screen is off and the tablet is not connected to power. That behavior is a model and power-state limitation, not proof that all Alexa processing has stopped.
Priority checklist: change these settings first
| Control | What it affects | Where to change it | What remains after the change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hands-Free Mode | Wake-word response and microphone-triggered activation | Fire tablet: Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode | Outside Show Mode, you can still press and hold Home to use Alexa |
| Alexa history | Stored recordings, transcripts, typed requests and Alexa responses | Alexa app: More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History, or amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings | Deletion requests may take time and may not remove every related record |
| Retention period | How long voice recordings are automatically saved | Alexa Privacy settings | Three months, 18 months, or no saved voice recordings; other data can remain |
| Use of recordings for improvement | Whether recordings may help improve services and develop features | Alexa app: More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data | Changing this does not disable Alexa or erase existing history |
| Collect App Usage Data | Opening, closing and duration of third-party app use on Fire OS | Fire tablet: Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data | Amazon-service data, all device processing and interest-based advertising controls are separate |
Set these controls for each tablet profile that you use. Amazon describes Fire tablet privacy settings as device-specific; a change in one profile does not automatically configure another profile on the same tablet.
1. Turn off Alexa Hands-Free Mode when you do not need wake-word listening
If your priority is preventing the tablet from responding to a spoken wake word, this is the most immediate setting. Disabling Hands-Free Mode stops wake-word responses until you turn the feature on again. It does not delete recordings already associated with your account.
Use the Fire tablet Settings app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Alexa.
- Tap Hands-Free Mode and switch it off.
Amazon documents this path in its Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs. The exact label can differ slightly by Fire OS release or user profile.
Use Quick Actions
Amazon also provides a faster control. In Show Mode, open Quick Actions and use the microphone/camera control to disable hands-free operation. Outside Show Mode, Quick Actions includes a Hands Free control. This is useful when you want to silence voice activation temporarily without navigating through Settings.
Use the physical-button shortcut
Hold the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons together for three seconds. Amazon says this turns Hands-Free Mode off. Repeat the action or use the Settings switch to turn it back on.
What you give up
With hands-free disabled, saying the wake word will not start Alexa. Outside Show Mode, Amazon says Alexa remains available by pressing and holding the Home button. That trade-off is intentional: you gain less accidental activation, but you lose hands-free convenience until re-enabling the feature.
2. Review Alexa history before deleting anything
Alexa Privacy provides a record of activity connected with your Amazon account. Amazon says the history view can include voice recordings, text transcripts, typed requests and Alexa’s responses. Reviewing it first helps you identify false wakes, unexpected requests or a household member’s activity before choosing a retention policy.
Open the history view
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Tap Alexa Privacy.
- Select Review Alexa History.
You can also open amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings in a browser and sign in to the relevant Amazon account. Filter and inspect entries, then remove individual items or use the available deletion controls. Amazon says recordings, transcripts and typed requests associated with the account can be deleted from this area.
Use history to investigate false wakes
A false wake occurs when the tablet mistakes ordinary speech or background audio for the wake word. The history entry can show what Alexa heard and how it interpreted the request. If these events are frequent, disabling Hands-Free Mode is a functional fix; deleting old entries only removes stored history and does not prevent another wake.

3. Choose an automatic deletion period that matches your risk tolerance
In Alexa Privacy, Amazon lets you select automatic deletion after three months or 18 months, or choose not to save voice recordings. These are account settings documented by Amazon, not independent privacy measurements.
Three-month deletion
This is the shorter automatic-retention option. It limits the window in which voice recordings remain available for review while preserving a longer history than immediate deletion. It can be a practical compromise if you occasionally need to troubleshoot a command or false wake.
18-month deletion
The 18-month setting keeps recordings available for substantially longer. Choose it only if the convenience of a long history outweighs the privacy cost of retaining more voice data.
Do not save voice recordings
When you select the no-save option, Amazon says audio is deleted after processing. However, Amazon also says transcripts and typed requests are retained for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat. “No saved recordings” therefore does not mean that every text representation disappears immediately.
Amazon warns that deleting data can limit personalization or certain features. A deletion request also takes time to process. Related records, attachments, information held by Alexa skills or outside Amazon’s cloud, de-identified data, and models already trained with data may not all be removed by the request. Do not treat the setting as an instant, universal eraser.

This control is separate from both Hands-Free Mode and history deletion. It governs whether voice recordings may be used to improve Amazon services and develop features; it does not stop the tablet from detecting a wake word, and changing it does not automatically erase recordings already stored in your history.
Find the setting
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Tap Alexa Privacy.
- Tap Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Review the option governing use of voice recordings for service improvement and select the choice you prefer.
The same controls are available through Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings page. Read the wording shown for your account because Amazon can adjust labels and available choices over time.
How to think about the trade-off
Allowing this use can support product improvement and feature development. Turning it off narrows the permitted use of recordings, but it does not provide the same result as turning off Hands-Free Mode: Alexa can still be activated, and your selected history-retention policy still applies.

Fire OS has a broader privacy control that is not an Alexa setting. Open Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data. Amazon describes the data as the opening, closing and duration of use of third-party apps.

What switching it off does
Disabling the option limits this particular app-usage collection. It does not disable every form of device data processing. Amazon says it does not affect data associated with Amazon services such as Prime Video, and it does not itself control interest-based advertising.

Why this belongs on the checklist
A tablet can collect app-use information even when Alexa Hands-Free Mode is off. Treat the controls as separate layers: use Alexa Privacy for voice requests and recordings, and use Fire OS privacy settings for third-party app activity.
Which settings should you use together?
Maximum reduction in voice activation
- Turn off Hands-Free Mode.
- Choose not to save voice recordings.
- Review Alexa history and delete existing entries.
- Turn off the use of recordings for service improvement if you do not want that secondary use.
This combination still leaves transcripts and typed requests for the 30-day period Amazon specifies when recordings are not saved, and it does not guarantee removal of data outside Amazon’s own systems.
Balanced convenience and retention
- Keep Hands-Free Mode on for convenient voice access.
- Set automatic deletion to three months.
- Review history periodically for false wakes.
- Decide separately whether service-improvement use is acceptable.
This preserves wake-word convenience while limiting how long recordings remain in the account.
Recommended Free Tools
Shared family tablet
- Check the active profile before changing any setting.
- Repeat the privacy review for each profile that uses Alexa.
- Explain to other users that turning off Hands-Free Mode changes how Alexa is activated.
Because settings are device- and profile-specific, configuring one profile is not a substitute for checking the others.
Troubleshooting missing or ineffective controls
The Hands-Free Mode option is missing
Confirm that you are using a Fire tablet with Alexa rather than a third-party tablet linked to Alexa. Then check the active user profile and install available Fire OS updates. Amazon’s menu names can vary by model and software version.
Alexa still works after hands-free is off
Hands-Free Mode controls wake-word activation. Outside Show Mode, pressing and holding Home can still invoke Alexa by design. Check whether another profile or device is being used before assuming the switch failed.
You cannot find an old recording
History may already have been deleted by your selected retention policy, removed manually, or associated with another Amazon account or profile. Deletion requests can also take time to complete.
The tablet does not react to the wake word
Hands-Free Mode may be disabled. On some Fire tablets, wake-word detection may also fail with the screen off when the tablet is not connected to power. Check the Hands-Free Mode switch and the tablet’s power state before changing account privacy settings.
A practical maintenance routine
- After setting up a new Fire tablet, open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and decide whether wake-word access is necessary.
- Open More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History and remove entries you do not want retained.
- Choose three months, 18 months or no saved voice recordings, understanding the transcript and typed-request rule for the no-save option.
- Open Manage Your Alexa Data and review service-improvement use separately.
- Open Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data to make a separate choice about third-party app activity.
- Repeat the review for every tablet profile and revisit it after a major Fire OS update.
The key distinction is simple: Hands-Free Mode controls when Alexa can start listening for a request; Alexa Privacy controls what activity is retained and how recordings may be used; Collect App Usage Data covers a different category of Fire tablet telemetry. Applying each control deliberately gives you a more predictable privacy setup than changing only one switch.
