When the membership entitlement ends, Sony’s US guidance says monthly games are playable only while the account has an active membership. Extra and Premium subscribers also need the appropriate tier for Game Catalog titles, and Premium is required for Classics Catalog titles. A catalog game must still be offered in the service as well.
The installed files may remain on your PS5, but Sony’s published pages describe access and entitlement—not automatic deletion of those files. Whether you can launch a particular game depends on how you obtained it, your current plan, and whether the title is still included. These rules are based on Sony’s US support pages accessed October 13, 2026; availability and plan benefits can differ by country and change over time.

Installation is not ownership
A PS5 can retain the downloaded data for a PlayStation Plus game after your subscription stops, but the data alone does not grant a continuing license. Sony says monthly games can be added to your library and played “as long as you have an active membership plan.” The relevant check is your account’s entitlement, not simply whether the game icon and files are still stored on the console.
Recommended Free Tools
Sony’s pages do not say that expiration automatically erases an installed game. They explain when access is authorized. Consequently, do not treat the continued presence of a game in PS5 storage as proof that it remains playable, and do not assume that a lock or launch error means the files were deleted.

First identify which kind of PS Plus game you downloaded
“A PS Plus game” can describe several different entitlements. They do not all follow the same rule.
| How the game entered your library | Access condition described by Sony | What happens when membership ends |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly game | Monthly games are available through the plan structure and are playable while the account has an active membership. See the PlayStation Plus games FAQ. | Adding or downloading it does not remove the active-membership requirement. The files can remain installed, but the subscription entitlement no longer authorizes play. |
| Game Catalog title | Available to Extra and Premium members with the corresponding plan. Sony notes that some catalog games have a service end date. See the Game Catalog support page. | You need both an active qualifying tier and a title that is still in the catalog. Losing either condition can remove access. |
| Classics Catalog title | The Classics Catalog is a Premium benefit, subject to catalog availability. Plan benefits are summarized on PlayStation Plus support. | When the Premium entitlement ends—or the title leaves the catalog—the subscription copy is no longer authorized for play. |
| Game purchased separately | A normal PlayStation Store purchase is a separate ownership entitlement. Sony’s FAQ specifically identifies purchasing a catalog title as a way to regain use of associated DLC. | Ending Plus does not cancel a separately purchased license for that title. Check that you are signed in to the purchasing account. |
| DLC or add-ons for a catalog game | Sony says access to DLC and add-ons associated with a catalog game is tied to the game’s service entitlement. | If membership expires or the game leaves the service, Sony says you lose access to that associated DLC until you resubscribe or purchase the game. |
What each PlayStation Plus tier contributes
The tier matters because a game can be validly installed yet unavailable under a lower plan. Sony’s current support summary distinguishes the benefits this way:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Essential: includes the monthly-games benefit.
- Extra: includes monthly games plus the Game Catalog.
- Premium: includes the preceding benefits, the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming.
A subscription ending removes the active entitlement associated with the tier. Downgrading can have a similar practical effect for a catalog title if the new plan no longer includes that catalog. Always compare the game’s listing with the plan shown on your account rather than relying on the game’s installed status.
Canceling renewal is not the same as immediate expiration
Turning off automatic renewal generally expresses a billing preference; it does not, by itself, establish the exact moment your benefits stop. Sony’s pages used here do not verify account-specific expiration timing. Open your PlayStation account subscription settings and check the displayed end date and current plan. Until that date, the account remains governed by the active membership shown there; after it, subscription-only games require a renewed entitlement.
This distinction is important when troubleshooting a game that appears locked immediately after you cancel. Check the account’s status first. A canceled renewal with remaining paid time is different from a membership that has reached its end date.
What to check when a downloaded game is locked
Use this order so you do not repurchase a game unnecessarily:

- Confirm the signed-in account. Make sure the PS5 user is using the PlayStation Network account that claimed the monthly game, holds the subscription, or bought the title.
- Check membership status and tier. In account or subscription settings, verify whether the plan is active and whether it is Essential, Extra or Premium. A Game Catalog title requires Extra or Premium; a Classics Catalog title requires Premium.
- Identify the entitlement. Look at how the game was acquired: monthly games, Game Catalog, Classics Catalog or a separate PlayStation Store purchase. Do not assume that a download from the catalog was purchased.
- Check catalog availability. A Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title may have an announced removal date. If the game has left the service, renewing alone does not guarantee that it will return to your library’s playable state.
- Check for a separate purchase. If the account bought the game, open the PlayStation Store purchase history or the game’s store page while signed in to that account. The purchase entitlement is distinct from the Plus catalog entitlement.
- Restore licenses only after checking the above. A license refresh can correct a synchronization problem, but it cannot create a missing subscription or bring back a title that is no longer offered. Sony’s support documentation does not promise a particular on-console prompt or lock message for every case.
What happens to DLC and add-ons?
DLC is governed separately enough that it deserves its own check. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus FAQ states: “If your membership expires, or if the content leaves the service you’ll also lose access to the DLC and add-on content associated with that game.” That statement is limited to add-ons associated with the catalog game in question.
Sony identifies two ways to use that associated DLC again: resubscribe to a qualifying membership while the game remains available, or purchase the game. Purchasing an add-on by itself does not establish that you own the underlying subscription game, so verify the base-game entitlement before buying anything.
If the title has left the catalog, do not assume that resubscribing will restore it. Confirm that the specific game is still offered in your region and on your tier. The FAQ’s remedy language explains how access to associated DLC can return; it is not a promise that every removed game will be reinstated.
Does the game stay on the PS5’s drive?
Sony’s published guidance reviewed for this question does not state that an expired subscription automatically deletes installed game files. It addresses authorization to play. Therefore, two separate facts can be true: the data may occupy storage, and the game may be blocked because the account no longer has the required entitlement.

Monthly games you claimed
A monthly game added to your library remains a subscription benefit, not a free permanent license. Sony’s wording covers the ability to add it and play it while the membership is active. The claim date or the fact that you downloaded it before does not remove that condition.
Game Catalog downloads
Catalog access has two moving parts: the account must have Extra or Premium, and the title must remain in the catalog. A game can therefore stop working even while your membership is still active if Sony removes that title. Conversely, keeping the game installed does not help an account whose Extra or Premium access has ended.

- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
Classics Catalog downloads
Classics Catalog access is tied to Premium. If you move to a lower tier or let Premium expire, a downloaded Classics title is no longer covered by that subscription entitlement. Catalog availability can also change independently of your plan.
Separately purchased copies
If you purchased the game from PlayStation Store, the purchase is the relevant license rather than the Plus catalog listing. Keep the purchasing account available on the console and distinguish the purchased edition from any subscription edition when both appear in your library.
Console sharing and other accounts
Sony’s current plan information says selected Plus benefits can be shared on one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. That statement does not settle every post-expiration scenario for secondary accounts, nor does it override the primary account’s need for an active, qualifying entitlement. If another user on the console cannot launch a game, check the subscribing or purchasing account first, then verify Console Sharing and Offline Play and the game’s catalog status.
Regional and time-sensitive limits
The cited pages are Sony’s US pages. Plan names, benefits, game availability, removal dates and store listings can differ in other countries and can change after the dates shown in Sony’s support material. Use the PlayStation Store and subscription page for your country when making a purchase or deciding whether to renew.
The official pages do not establish how long cloud saves remain available after membership ends, the exact behavior of every secondary account, or a universal on-screen error message. Treat those as account-specific questions rather than assuming a single result for every PS5.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line for a game you already downloaded
If it was a monthly, Game Catalog or Classics Catalog download, expiration removes the subscription entitlement that made it playable. The files may remain installed, but installation is not ownership. A catalog title also has to remain in the service and be covered by your tier. A separately purchased game follows its purchase license instead. For DLC tied to a catalog game, Sony says access ends when membership expires or the game leaves, and returns after resubscribing or purchasing the game, subject to the title still being available.
