Before unlinking OneDrive, make sure important files are stored where you expect and available without an internet connection. Check Windows folder redirection, choose what the replacement service will sync or back up, then verify that you can restore files. Unlinking OneDrive disconnects the computer; it does not delete your cloud files.
1. Check where your files are—and whether they are local
OneDrive can display files that are online-only rather than stored in full on your computer. Microsoft says files marked as available on the device remain in local OneDrive folders after unlinking; online-only files remain accessible on OneDrive.com. Before changing settings, open important files while offline or copy the ones you need into a folder outside OneDrive. Microsoft’s unlinking guidance and account-removal guidance explain the distinction.

- Identify the files that must remain available without internet access.
- Copy those files to a destination independent of OneDrive, such as a local folder or external drive.
- Open a few copied files from that destination to confirm the copies work.
2. Review Windows folders redirected to OneDrive
On Windows, Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Screenshots, and Camera Roll may be backed up to OneDrive instead of residing only in their customary local locations. In OneDrive, open Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup and check which folders are included and where they point. Microsoft’s known-folder guidance describes how this redirection works.

Verify the contents and paths before relying on the new setup. A work- or school-managed computer may limit the choices available; ask the administrator rather than trying to override organizational settings.

3. Choose the replacement’s sync and privacy behavior
Decide what the new service should upload and keep locally. A switch does not automatically improve privacy: that depends on the provider and your choices. Review the service’s own privacy and security information, and check these controls:
- Folders: Select only the folders you intend to sync, rather than assuming the entire computer or all known folders are included.
- Offline availability: Mark essential files for offline use or choose a mode that keeps full local copies, if offered.
- Mobile uploads: Check whether camera uploads are enabled and whether they include only new photos or other media too.
- Sharing: Review shared folders and links, especially if other people rely on them.
- Encryption: Check what encryption and account-security controls the service provides. The sources cited here do not establish that one cloud provider is categorically more private than another.
Settings are provider-specific. For example, Google Drive for desktop offers streaming, which uses less computer storage, and mirroring, which downloads a full copy. Google says disconnecting an account configured for streaming removes its offline files. That behavior is specific to Google Drive, not a rule for every sync service. 4. Keep an independent backup, not just another sync
Cloud sync keeps selected files aligned across locations; it is not necessarily a separate backup with an independent restore path. If you use a Mac, Apple’s Time Machine instructions, published July 6, 2026, describe backing up to USB or other external storage, encrypting a backup during setup, and restoring files. Apple recommends a backup disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity. Keep the password for an encrypted backup somewhere safe: without it, restoring the backup may not be possible.

5. Unlink OneDrive, then verify the new setup
Once your files and folder locations are accounted for, unlink OneDrive if you no longer want that computer connected to the account. Microsoft’s instructions differ by operating system:
- Windows: Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar, open Help & Settings > Settings > Account, then choose Unlink this PC.
- Mac: Open OneDrive preferences, select the Account tab, then choose Unlink this Mac.
Set up the replacement service using the folders and offline behavior you chose. Then check that files appear in the expected local and cloud locations, and test restoring at least one file from your backup. Unlinking alone does not erase OneDrive cloud files. Microsoft’s unlink and re-link steps cover Windows and Mac.

6. Treat cloud deletion as a separate decision
If you also want to remove files from OneDrive, review them separately after the replacement and backup are working. Deleting files online is different from unlinking or uninstalling the app. Microsoft’s OneDrive deletion instructions warn that emptying the recycle bin makes its contents unrecoverable, and deleting shared files can make them unavailable to other people. Do not empty it until you have checked recovery needs and shared folders.
