Start by reviewing PowerToys’ General settings—especially startup, updates, shortcut conflicts, and backups—then enable only the utilities that solve a problem you encounter repeatedly. There is no Microsoft-prescribed universal setup order. For frequent window arranging, try FancyZones; for app launching, choose PowerToys Run or Command Palette; add Keyboard Manager, Workspaces, or Awake only when their particular function fits your routine.
Review General settings before configuring utilities
Open PowerToys Settings and use the settings search when you cannot find a control. The General page is a practical first stop: it contains options for startup, updates, backups, and administrator mode. These controls affect how PowerToys is available and maintained, rather than changing how a particular utility works. Microsoft’s General settings documentation describes the available controls.

- Run at startup: Turn it on if you want enabled PowerToys utilities available after signing in. Leave it off if you prefer to start PowerToys manually.
- Updates: Review automatic downloads and notifications. Microsoft says automatic downloads are enabled by default on new installations. Its documentation also describes backing up settings before automatic updates and restoring them if corruption is detected.
- Back up & restore: Choose a backup location before spending time on custom layouts or key remappings, so you have a way to restore your configuration.
- Shortcut conflicts: If two modules claim the same shortcut, use the conflict interface to reassign, ignore, or remove a shortcut.
- Administrator mode: Enable it only when a utility needs elevated capabilities. For example, FancyZones may need PowerToys running as administrator to snap elevated applications such as Windows Terminal or Task Manager.
Choose utilities based on the task you repeat
PowerToys includes several utilities with distinct jobs. Configure the one that addresses recurring friction instead of enabling features simply because they are available. The capabilities and limits below are described in Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation; utility behavior and defaults can change between releases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →FancyZones for arranging windows
FancyZones lets you create custom screen zones and place windows into them. With its default behavior, drag a window while holding Shift to show the zones. A sensible starting point is one layout for your usual work arrangement; change activation behavior or other options only if the default interaction does not suit you.

You can enable Override Windows Snap to use keyboard snapping, and configure zones to appear across monitors. Showing zones on all monitors may affect performance. Snapping elevated applications may require administrator mode, as noted above. See Microsoft’s FancyZones documentation for its controls.
PowerToys Run or Command Palette for launching
Both tools can launch apps, so start by comparing their interface and broader capabilities rather than assuming you need both. PowerToys Run opens with Alt+Space by default and can search apps, folders, files, and running processes; calculate; run system commands; convert units; and more. PowerToys must be running and Run must be enabled.

Command Palette opens with Win+Alt+Space by default and offers app launching, commands, file search, web browsing, and access to Windows tools. It also has a compact search-box option. Pick the launcher whose scope and interface match your habits; the documented overlap in app launching does not establish a need to enable both.

Keyboard Manager supports remapping individual keys and keyboard shortcuts. Set up a mapping only for a clear, repeated need, then check that important shortcuts still work as intended. Microsoft’s documentation says that starting in PowerToys 0.100, new installations open a redesigned WinUI 3 editor by default, with an option to switch between the new and legacy editors. That version-specific behavior should not be assumed for older installations.

Workspaces for a repeatable project setup
Workspaces can capture a desktop arrangement, launch its applications, and position them. It is most relevant when you regularly use the same set of apps in the same arrangement.
- A single-instance application may be repositioned instead of opened as a new instance.
- Applications launch first and then move into position.
- Saving windows that appeared snapped does not guarantee that they will use snapping when launched from a clean state.
Awake for a temporary no-sleep task
Awake can prevent the PC from sleeping during a long-running task, presentation, or download without changing Windows power-plan settings. It works only while you are signed in and does not function on the lock screen; at other times, the normal power plan applies. Use it for a specific task rather than as a replacement for Windows power configuration.

Use a simple decision rule
Match the setting to the friction you actually face. The useful comparison is the task, how you activate the feature, where its scope overlaps with another tool, and any operational limits:

| Need | First utility to consider | How it is activated or used | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Place several windows in a recurring layout | FancyZones | Drag a window and hold Shift by default; keyboard snapping is available with Override Windows Snap enabled. | Showing zones on all monitors may affect performance; elevated apps may require administrator mode. |
| Launch apps and search from a launcher | PowerToys Run or Command Palette | Alt+Space for Run or Win+Alt+Space for Command Palette by default. | App launching overlaps; Run requires PowerToys to be running and the utility enabled. |
| Correct a key or shortcut that repeatedly gets in the way | Keyboard Manager | Configure a key remapping or shortcut remapping. | Check that important shortcuts continue to work as intended. |
| Reopen a familiar group of apps in a familiar arrangement | Workspaces | Capture the arrangement, then launch the workspace. | Single-instance apps may be repositioned; apps launch before moving, and saved snapped appearance does not guarantee snapping on a clean launch. |
| Keep the PC awake for a task | Awake | Use it for the period when sleep prevention is needed. | It works only while signed in, not on the lock screen. |
For the first session, review General settings, make a backup, and configure one utility that solves a repeated problem. Add another only if it addresses a different need; in particular, compare the two launchers before deciding whether to keep both.
